I have hiked extensively on trails and in the back country of JTNP. I have been a volunteer back country monitor and archeology site steward for over 10 years and have logged 1000's of hours and miles. Only once in the park did I see anyone who looked sketchy and they were at one of the busiest trails heads. I have never felt the need to carry a weapon though I do carry a 6" survival knife as part of my safety gear. Too many people have no clue how unforgiving and deadly the desert can be. As Dennis Casebier says in his lectures, "this is a real desert, it will kill you". People have gotten lost in or near major campgrounds and on popular trails. It is very easy to step off trail and become disoriented. People have died within 7-8 hours when the temp is 110-115 deg. People have died within sight of a paved road or a campground. In addition to being a volunteer, I have lived in 29 Palms for over 50 years. Here is my advice. Never hike alone, unless you have real land navigation skills and experience, stay on major front county trails. Carry twice as much water as you think you will need plus electrolyte drinks and drink them steadily. Take a course on basic survival skills through the Desert Institute at JTNP. ALWAYS give a friend or family member a copy of your itinerary and don't deviate from it without informing your friend. Respect the desert, use common sense, stay safe. Remember it is only an adventure if you live to tell about it.

That’s all great advice but something still may have happened to her outside of normal survival circumstances. You know the area, look where her car was found way past Utah Tr, but her car had been seen at Indian Cove Campground and her gear was found at Jumbo Rocks. That’s really odd.

I’m not sure how you can live in 29 Palms and not see or experience the large amount of weird crackpots in the area. I agree with what you have said, but boy, have I seen some seriously sketchy folks around Yucca, 29, North Gate, etc. The desert attracts some characters. That being said, sketchy people don’t need to look sketchy either. National Parks are a great place for serial killers to work! Lone hikers? Remote locations? RVs, Vans? No surveillance cameras and thousands of folks in and out a day? Yikes!

@@djdrisco123 There are lots of sketchy people here and many flat-out badasses. The vast majority of them just want to be left alone. Don't bother them and they won't bother you. On a per capita basis, there are no more sketchy wackos in the desert than anywhere else. Due the sparse population they do stand out more.

Thanks for this account, and for the useful survival information. I'd like to add, "Never go into any wilderness area without a fully charged, working satellite phone." Obviously, it's a bad idea to think "I've got this nifty gadget that will save me no matter how foolish, inexperienced, dumb, stoned, etc. I am." But a satellite phone might save both experienced hikers and idiots.

Joshua Tree is a magical, mystical place. I have camped there twice, always with large groups, loved the night stars and unique terrain. RIP my sister 🌌

Very smart...I am into True Crime and would never EVER go there by myself, even if meeting someone there. I can not tell you how many of these videos I've seen where one person (male or female) goes there by himself/herself and winds up dead with it usually happening at night. Since there's nothing to run into there, as the locals say, I believe, after she was killed, the car was planted there and vandalized. There's a huge drug community that live there and it makes it very dangerous. Yes, always go in groups; never alone, even if you're suppose to be meeting someone there.

What kind of large group?

Sounds something like the Daniel Robinson case where he too disappeared in the desert (though hasn't been found yet), but his Jeep was smashed almost beyond recognition after being found under suspicious circumstances. There have been many unfortunate disappearances in and around Joshua Tree NP. Thx for covering this very sad story. How can police NOT suspect foul play?!? They need to step up to this missing persons epidemic alot better than they have been!!

Joshua Tree is not a place to camp alone. Many of the disappearances are people who hiked the desert. There are few trails in the open desert and it is very easy to become disoriented due to a lack of landmarks.

I was thinking that too because I spent a lot of time on the Robinson case and am still keeping in touch with some of the people out west who helped assist in that huge search after I did the prime time News interview on that case. They had over a thousand people out looking. But I agree they are very similar..

Watching this from overseas; your police seem really really amateur and shouldn’t be let anywhere near a badge. Of course not all but a large group.

I’m a dude and I would never camp there alone or even drive through the park alone. I’ve camped at Indian Cove back in 2018 and have spent a lot of time throughout JT. Wonder Valley is sketch. She should have never done that alone.

Yes, and I think it doesn't hurt to make it blatantly obvious (are those the same meaning...?) Ultimately, it does no good (for a victim) to record her own murder, but it could dissuade someone from targeting you if they know they're on camera.

I would hope noticing the cameras would dissuade someone from hurting a person, but some are so drugged up I don't think they would notice. What will having cameras accomplish if they are disabled? Many criminal will do anything to hide their tracks. Helping with an investigation takes precision in gathering evidence, cameras may not be adequate especially if the vehicle is moving , the audio will not be accurate either from engine noise. Also cost. Electronics aren't cheap. Before you jump down my throat I have collected court certified evidence for decades, all evidence must be meticulously gathered, a specific method followed, then the documentation is the same.

Living in the desert southwest I would never go camping alone. Lots of drifters out here and just really odd people.

A lot of us older, retired have ended up supporting our grown and middle-aged children during the lockdown. I feel for this young mother, her child, and her family.

I remember visiting Joshua Tree and seeing her posters all over Joshua Tree National Park. Avoid visiting the park in June, July and August. It is extremely hot! Rest in peace Erica.

So tragic! And now her son has no mom. Prayers for her bereaved loved ones 🙏. As always thank you Bryan for bringing this event to our attention. Thank you for your compassion and caring heart. 🙏

I have camped at Indian Cove, twice. Joshua Tree campgrounds are not exactly places to camp by oneself. 😔

I frequently camp in Joshua Tree. It's amazing, especially Jumbo Rocks. But it can be very dangerous in the summer time. Also there's alot of rural areas where I'm sure weirdos can lurk. I wouldn't go alone or unarmed. Rip Erica 🙏

Some states are “open carry” and allow you to have a visible sidearm, while there may be certain counties within those states that require a concealed carry permit and you’re required to keep your firearm non-visible. There’s not a simple answer, because the law varies from state to state and county law trumps state law, so you’ll have to look into the specific laws for your area.

Some areas allow for a rifle on a sling without a round in the chamber and the magazine can be in the magazine feed, again without the rifle being chambered. Along with a sidearm, it depends on the area. In Ohio you can open carry a rifle and a pistol or open carry a rifle and conceal carry a pistol.

The desserts in CA are not safe for a young beautiful woman camping alone. There's human traffickers and crazy people. Very sad. Sounds like they haven't found her body were us it. So many end up disappeared or dead around there.

@@susanlongb4 That is not true. Please don't spread false information. The actual law says a gun cannot be carried inside a National Park facility (like a ranger station), not the Park itself. With appropriate carry permit (if you choose concealed carry) , carrying within the park is completely okay. In addition, firearm laws of the particular state you are in at the time are in effect. All this info is on the NPS website.

Definitely sounds like foul play. Too many questionable things going on. I know people love solo hiking, and the van life is so popular now. But, unfortunately, there's a lot of bad people out there, and you've gotta be very careful when you're out on your own.

I have heard a lot of cases lately about people dying from heat exposure including in Joshua Tree. Summer is definitely not a good time to visit there, particularly alone. There must be a few local low life's (male and female) with baked brains that pray on vulnerable people and their property. Poor Erica, but at least her family has some closure.

Thank you for this one Bryan, I live in the area and far too many people have gone missing or died with little or no solutions revealed in the past few years. As always well presented.

Joshua Tree has been romanticized through the album by U2 however, it has hidden dangers. The heat is deadly most of the year and the area has been home to flourishing meth labs. A lot of sketchy people there. A lot of strung out meth addicts. Given the surrounding population, I would say foul play was most likely the cause of Erica's death.

The national park part of Joshua Tree is not terrible. The desert has several campground, no real landmarks, and it is easy to become disoriented when walking or hiking the desert. The cities of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms are another story. 😒

I spent a lot of time in the area of Yuma and Twentynine Palms during my enlisted experience and visited Joshua Tree a few times. To explain just how brutal the heat can get is not easy. Words don’t do it justice. It’s like exercising in a bake oven with hot air being blown on you and under the driest conditions. I’ve never lost water like that anywhere else. Our Corpsmen would constantly come around checking on us and making sure we we drinking all of our canteen and immediately refilling them. Yeah it’s a death trap if you’re caught out there with no decent amount of water. Also with her being a beautiful woman it’s not the best place to be alone. There’s some seedy people on the outskirts of those small towns. A lot of great people too, but the criminal element is really among the worst. Thanks for covering this story.

yeah and now there are quite a few illegal cannabis growers out there who are suspicious of anyone coming near their operations. Dangerous people.

Not sure how you missed this in your research, but many friends and relatives actually stated that Erika was NOT in a good mental/psychological condition before leaving and that for weeks her emails had seemed "off" (in their words). She was indeed behaving abnormally when setting out on this trip. I live in Walnut Creek, where Erika lived, and there was speculation in the local press that she had had a mental breakdown. I'm not sure how this helps in determining what happened and her cause of death, but it does seem a factor to consider. She may have just parked her car and set out to die in the desert (it's been done before) or perhaps was just wandering in a state of confusion, and the car was later vandalized. Then again, it might not have been that at all...another mystery that can never be solved.

Thank you, too many people jump to the conclusion that it is some local scum that is responsible for every disappearance or death in and around the Morongo Basin (Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Landers, Johnson Valley, Yucca Mesa, Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms, the Marine Corps Air Ground Training Center and Wonder Valley).

I grew up in the area. I remember days with temps up to 130 F. It’s very dry and you literally feel like you are in an oven. I could never stay outside for long when it was that hot. You really have to be careful.

Ladies, keep in mind you cannot just venture out into isolated areas by yourself. the world is full of creeps, crazy and dangerous people. Once those creeps realize you are by yourself, they'll attack. they see you as weak and will pray on you. If you really must go out into wilderness or isolated areas by yourself, you must have a gun with you. Don't be naive. the world is not as pink as you would wanted to be. stay safe.

We've had our car vandalized by motorcycle riders out in the high desert you don't go out there alone or without a big gun.

There seems to be a romanticized view of Joshua Tree NP. The reality is that it is a big desert with few points of reference for those walking or hiking it. It is easy to become disoriented and is not a good place for one to seek "alone time." We have always camped Joshua Tree NP in large groups (Indian Cove or Sheep's Pass) and no-one ventures off alone, even for a pee at 3 a.m. 😉

We live in this area. When this all went down the first thing that came to mind was tourist + heat. If you're not acclimated to the heat around here.. do NOT play around here in the summertime. If you've never said to yourself "it's *ONLY* going to be 100f today" you are not acclimated. My guess is she went into the park, met some sketchball that kidnapped her in her own vehicle. After the abduction the car was abandoned then a separate group of tweakers took the car for a joy ride, banged it up and called their other tweaker friends to pick them up. If she was heat exhausted in the park, the first thing that goes is your mental clarity... making you an easy target for those badguys who are "acclimated"

There was no evidence that she ever entered the park. She had told her family she was heading to JTNP. Her body was found in the open desert approximately 2/3 of a mile from her vehicle.

There is a rumor going around the high desert cities of Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree and 29 Palms that there is a serial killer operating in and around Joshua Tree National Park and in the Wonder Valley area. I live in Desert Hot Springs and visit the Park quite often and have often hiked alone. I wouldn't do that now.

After watching many of these videos it appears that 99% of people disappearing were hiking solo. It doesn't seem that most parks have remote places for cover from heat/cold, signs indicating directions even in remote very rural areas, and remote modes of contact such as a CB. Aside from. a big search it doesn't appear like they've done things like highly recommend hikers use a flashlight that also has a blinking or strobe capacity that can be turned on if the search goes into the early evening, as well as a reflective item to be used in the day to alert searchers. Or perhaps if people want to buy or rent the same wrist item some people on probation are required to use that has a signal that is sent to a satellite.

All those items except ankle monitoring are on the list of to be taken with you when hiking, but none will work if you are unable to use them. Hiking alone is ridiculous. I am an experienced hiker, decades in fact, my number one item, a reliable person or persons to hike with. People will be critical about my statement about solo hiking, but fact are facts, one slip and you are unable to help yourself.

Doesn't make any sense. Why would someone steal the car then immediately vandalize it? Perhaps it was an attempted carjacking or abduction and there was a struggle then an accident occurred or they get mad that she runs off so they trash her car, she gets lost and dies from the intense heat.

This could be a case of mistaken identity, they criminals thought she was someone else. perhaps a drug dealer that is why the car was so torn apart. She was beaten and injured left to die, Meth is a nasty product, too common in the remote areas., the crimaials who make it, use it and are horrid. Sadly there will be few definitive answers.

I believe there are people in that area doing harm to people traveling alone. She stopped to help a couple with car trouble on the side of the road. They took her hostage and into the desert where they left her without any provisions. Travelling alone or hiking alone is much too dangerous for anybody. Don't do it! I was born and raised here in Joshua tree and the high desert area. The monument is beautiful however the high desert is a very dangerous and dark world be careful out there I have seen so many people hurt or lost to the landscape or by other. 🙏

I don't believe anyone will ever find out what really happened to this poor woman. It's very sad. There are way too many dangerous people out there and I'm very sorry this happened to her. God bless.

Praying her family finds answers. You know, don't have a bad day and then get abducted; everyone will think you took your own life. GOD bless her.

In fact, I recently did a prayer bible study and quoted from PubMed on a study done on the effects of prayer, Guess what? IT WORKS! Even long distant prayer was found to help! Just on the chance that I am right, and I am.... why would you risk an eternity in hell? I love the LORD, I wish you did to. Have a blast of a day!

You sound like the sweetest person on earth. When you do the Grand Canyon, check out the Hermit Trail. Amazing. We visited the backcountry office and because we were experienced enough, they talked us through an amazing 4-day backpacking trip that included the Hermit trail. Some of the most amazing and difficult hiking I've done yet! As always, thanks for all you do!

Lived in that area years ago, still live in the Mohave Desert. Never hike during June, July, August and September...our weather cools down finally in later October. Lots of low-life people live there because it's affordable. But I'm going to tell you being a woman who drove trucks and built highways I did lots of things by myself. I always went out alone...I was fearless and stupid but I never ever went camping by myself...THAT makes me wonder. Also, maybe I missed it but where exactly was her body found. Doing a map would help us crime sleuths try to put it together as to what happened.

I've come to the conclusion that these folks are being stalked or surveilled while in the highway on their way to their destination and then they persue to kidnap. I can only think of a few groups capable of doing that in that area of California.

She was found off of Amboy and Wilson road. Amboy is a just about 2 miles north of Hwy 62 and runs parallel .

I lived in 29 Palms when this happened. JTree National Park not even 2 mins down the road.. Her body was found outside of the park in relative distance to Wonder Valley. I distinctly remember the signs her family had posted in our small town. I've driven past her memorial. May her soul rest in peace and her family be wrapped in love.

But why would you do that. Surely people can proceed to being more risk adverse in theses situations. It’s not rocket science to furnish your mind with caution. A solo woman ventures into a secluded barren area and doesn’t stop to think ..hey this is not a good idea. Please people stop traveling alone ..too many evil freaks out there...not enough cctv unlike the UK.

does anyone know if there has been a missing persons database established yet for the National Park System, which is under federal management i believe ..i saw somewhere recently that they had not, stating that basically it was due to cost factors .. i was always under the impression this 'database' existed

How in gods name would a woman even consider going camping alone! Honest……how awful…..

This is very weird and unfortunate. I feel so bad for her, I hope her family gets closure one day.

Why would she have left all her camping gear? She was found so far from her campsite. That seems like an abduction set-up. Bless her soul.

I’m super confused by this as well. And really curious about what was found at her campsite, her belongings and their condition. I don’t tend to suspect foul play when people go missing in the wild-not at first anyway. But this much weirdness doesn’t add up.

I'm from Australia and used to extreme temperatures and whilst I was in USA in 2017 I wanted to camp J.T.N.P. once there I decided it was safer just for day trips. It was magical and beautiful but also vast expanse of desert and quite isolated in areas. It felt quite brutal and so many missing people there. They were searching for a young couple that was missing while I was there, so that was enough for me.

The young couple was found, it was a murder/suicide. Some think the female had suffered a major injury and the male felt it was best to do a mercy killing and then shoot himself. Sadly they were within 1 to 1.5 miles of the main highway.

That was a large rock thrown through the window. They said the car had been vandalized. Joshua Tree National Park is surrounded by areas with a lot of sketchy people, drug addicts, drug dealers, ex-felons, homeless. Unlike other national parks, this park is just a few miles away from these folks. Desert housing is very cheap relative the the rest of California so it does attract an unsavory bunch.

why are women going hiking and camping alone now days? yes it is BS that we can't do so, but better safe than sorry. it's just a different time now, to many sick individuals out there looking for prey. and not just women, men too. don't go alone. and stick together when in group.

Been in Joshua tree my entire life and I'm fine. More people need to use their brain. Never hike alone. Bring extra water. Stay on the trail. Leave the locals alone 🌌

No cell phone service,no water,no food, and help takes a long time there. Be carful and bring food,water,weapons when you do travel to Joshua tree.

Hi Bryan! Rule No:1: There is no such thing as coincidence in respect of crime. Many people have gone missing in Joshua Tree. Besides that, weirdness pervades that area. I have lived in Australia for many years but I grew up in Arizona and my Dad took the family to Joshua Tree when we were kids. It is beautiful and very eerie. Unfortunately, I think that Erika's death was not an accident. Certainly, the circumstantial evidence does not point in that direction. I do hope the police put these two suspects they have right through the wringer. I think it is more likely that pigs will fly than that their involvement is a "coincidence." My hope is that Erika rests in peace and that justice will be served. Her friends and family will be in my prayers. 29/12/2021

I live in Joshua Tree, though beautiful, there is A LOT of meth and many sex offenders and creepy people around this area. Aside from that, people come here and have no idea about the snakes and the extreme heat.

Seems to be a very dangerous park. To many people disappering there.

Only parked I’ve ever been attacked in.. stay away from giant rock and always stay armed. It’s your constitutional right.
