1G Plate Stick Welding | SMAW
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In todays video we got Welding Fly Duck stick welding a 1 inch plate with the SMAW process. The root pass is welded with 6010 and then is filled and caped with 7018. The welding electrode used is a size 1/8" to fill it up quicker.

Do you think you could look at my welds on my KZread short?
I just began my welding journey and this is self-explanatory. Thank you so much. Love from Nigeria 🇳🇬
I'm just coming the end of the MIG part of my UK level 2 City and Guilds and after this I can't wait to start stick welding again, loved it on my level 1 course. Just so much sound advice in this video clip, great instruction from an awesome instructor. Thank you 🤜🤛
Memories of welding school at Hobart in Troy, Ohio - where they make the machines. One of the best welding schools in the world. They knew how to turn out welders from raw recruits. This video shows proper arc gap very well. Nice work.

You make a great instructer. Thank you for all the information!
Put some strong backs on the root side, with a mouse hole cut out . Ie two pieces of 12mm thickness flat bar, with a half circle cut out in middle of flat bar , doing this also will stop the plate being tacked on the root. And keep the plate welded more flat ,unless this has been preset for distortion.
great instruction and arc shots! PS Thank you for your service!
HOLY F*****K! In less than 10 minutes, you covered EV-ER-Y-THING I did wrong in 3 hours of class yesterday, and how to correct it! Thank you!
Every time I watch doesn’t matter the time day or night I wanna go grab my hood and burn some rod!!!! Great informational video. Started a new company about 6mnths ago and had to do my 3G it had been a while since I tested last company I was with for 5yrs. Did a 6G with them but the new company wouldn’t except theirs
I used my GI Bill to go to welding school 12 years ago. Best moved I’ve ever made.
See that pull. That is why weldments need to be stress relieved.
Beautiful 1" test plate, I had to chuckle at all of your comments as you were filling it up, after welding for over 45 years, ( now retired), and full penning welds on plate and wide flange beams as heavy as 700 lbs a foot, I've done and said everything you have just said to myself as I was filling joints up to a cover pass, always trying to make that Cover perfect, lol, you look like a great welder, hope these young guys and gals pay attention to you, they will learn some good stuff!! Great video, thanks...... and best of Luck to your channel. My GI bill put me through welding school in the 70's. Made a good living all my life, welding is a vital trade for anyone willing to actually work for a Living!

nice job getting information out there to in experienced and new to the skill potential welders!
What I love about welding is how satisfying it is
When doing these full penitration welds we always preheat and use a needle gun between each pass to destress. Also post heat to to the same. All of our welds are ultrasound tested as well. Been welding for over 35 years, so much poor welding out there! Hopefully your video may help!
Im a young beginner this gave me so much knowledge and actually now seeing it i am eager to start practice this is the video i have been waiting for you guys teach me everything i need to know and learn 💯

Always remember ,hold the sides and the middle looks after it’s self, this reduces undercut works on all butt welds in all positions
Thanks for uploading the video. I was doing this same with lighter stock in a welding class. From watching you, I had my arms properly positioned, but my face wasn't close enough to the weld. You have your hands just above your ears at the start. I will try to remember that on my next try. I am getting a better helmet to see the outline of the weld too. I had trouble seeing the edges of the metal bevels using my current helmet. As a result , I wasn't going straight like I thought I was.
Great welder... thank you for your service marine
Thanks. Very informative and instructive.
Thanks for your video . Before starting, explan about rods, current, machine settings, job positions, and show clear video. Etc good work Thanks so much 🙏
Aquí iniciándome en este mundo de la soldadura, mi manejo del inglés es bastante básico, pero logré entender bastante su explicación, mil gracias por el video. Mi prueba de certificación estaa unos días. Gracias nuevamente.

There's 8 in our night classes at college and we are all finding it almost impossible to get full penetration on the root weld. It looks like the simplest weld to do!! I've had over 25 attempts on 8" long practice pieces 😮. Going to try this on Tuesday night 😣

Run the amperage just hot enough to before it burns through and turn it down a bit, let the puddle build, use whipping motion if using SMAW

Very nice quality welding, the amount of deflection on the test plate is insane, we always put some offset pre deflection on plates of this thickness but I dont think we would have got anywhere near this.
what about the fact that those two plates don't create a level plane and are concave after the weld?
Thank you, now I know how to apply this techniques in our school.
If I saw this video years ago I wouldn't have quit welding because I still love it😓😓😓
Top essa raiz e esse enchimento e acabamento, parabéns.
The power of HEAT !!! 1 inch plate bended like it was made from plastic 😀😀
Dios los bendiga por compartir el conocimiento . Saludo desde Colombia ..Ibagué
After the hot pass on base metal that thick you need to transition to a 5/32 diameter filler rod. I worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and you would get reamed for welding flat down with 1/8 electrodes. These schools need to teach students to carry a larger puddle and get that joint filled.

the 2 plates aren't flat anymore?
terima kasih.. thanks for yours video..👋
I was Wielder from my Child, But I'm Steel Learning From you, You Do Better Keep it up💪
I work in a building that has some exposed w-shapes that look to be 1" thick, or close to it. These beams have been mechanically coupled when a connection is required and I always wondered why as there are 4 rows of 9 bolts each sandwichng the beam connection with 1" plates that extend at least 24" each side of the connection. That is literally 24x6x2=72 bolts! I assumed it has something to do with the difficulty in welding members of this size and watching this video helped my understand possibly why mechanical attachments might be favored due the amount of heat this many filling passes generates. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir❤️

I worked at Electric Boat for a few years. The test to get in was a 1” plate, flat and vertical. TIG, I’m old school from the USAF. I would have preferred, 6010’s.

That was amazing. Looks like a robot did those welds...(I guess one actually did! Haha) Beautiful work!!!
Straight drag is the move for me on the root !!!!!! But to each there own

First welder on KZread teaching how to weld properly I’ve seen, there is another a white guy but he’s more of tan or shop welding. This guy is as good as me, I’ve been doing these for over 6yrs and have NEVER failed one. I never done guide lines but I guess I’ll try it next time.
beautiful welds i love this video

very impressive....you are my idol.....
Good jod idol🙋♂️ im Welder from Philippines🇵🇭thanks tip how to good weld👍
Very nice! 6010 is a more aggressive rod than the 6011 or the 7018 and that’s a nice smooth weld!

I like you works
I have my smaw tests coming up hopefully this helps
Love from Bangladesh ❤
Well done.
What do you do about the warping on parts this thick, as seen in the video the part comes bowed. Is this where you would use a symmetrical bevel groove so you add even heat on both sides?
Good job done 👍
is it just me or does it look like the two plates went from being on the same plane to really bending in the weld area due to thermal contraction?

i learned how to weld from an old dude back when i was 12, that put gas torch in one hand and a rod in the other and made me learn that first. then i went to stick, Mig and then Tig. he showed me how to weld cast iron, aluminum, anodized aluminum. this old guy from WW2 showed me a lot about welding. an old machine shop reminds me of him. thanks for the video.
12:01 Has the assembly gone a bit U-shaped? The two plates seem to be angled to each other, not flush to each other.
