I welded and cut and bent both ways so many of these I get sick just watching you set this up. I had a box full of these test plates made up and had to weld them in every position. Predominately with 7018 but also 6010. I still have burn scares, laughing. Brought back old memories. Thank you

@@joebly5641 you're right it isn't an art it is a trade and in a trade there is this thing called VISUAL INSPECTION If a weld is shit then it looks like shit aslong as your looking for the right thing unless you're working on playgrounds or hand rails for the middle of nowhere or welds that don't really matter and are just there to stick some random shit together for a quick gig then you would be correct...but for this shit it's quite important I would fail this plate just because of the sheer amount of undercut plus the hollows I saw on the arc shot Something I have to check off on a sheet everyday at work is uniform weld profile uniform length and width of weld bead.

Nice job for a learner. Try half the gap with a 7016. Don't flick back and forth your chucking metal away. Keep the arc short and watch for the arc flame just licking through. If it gets too hot slow up and shorten the arc to cool it down or vice versa . This applies to all positions and trains the eye to watch the pool. First ten thousand bots are the hardest.

The whole point of welding is to melt both metals equally and to drag the rod if it is horizontal position, if you weld verticals than some rods like 6013 are perfect for vertical up, but do not try vertical down with that electrode, if you weld with 7018 than your arc needs to be very short, I mean you need to melt both pieces with same rhythm and move electrode, after some time you will get experience to make it routine.

Compare 1:30 to 2:49 and you will see there was something changed about the video sequence. At 2:49, the wing added to the right side doesn't have a hand grinder groove cut in it. You can tell at the very end of the first pass, the root, he was panicking because it was getting hot and about to blow out. I think there was multiple attempts at this root pass on different plates. Unless someone dictated such a large gap for the spacing on the root, I don't see the point. Cut landings on the plate edges and use less gap for spacing. A few extra amps and push the rod forward instead of dragging the root and you could easily watch it cut through without so much flipping back and forth and pushing so much puddle through the backside of the plate. Maybe the plates were prepared for him and that's what he had to use along with the required spacing? Who knows? No explanation given before video. It could be done easier as far as the root pass went. None the less, informative video.

Your comment made me laugh. My first thought was why an 1/8 gap with no land on the bevel? You are just asking for an unwieldy size keyhole 😅. I'm with you, tighten the gap, grind that knife edge of a bevel a nice land and kick up the amps and punch through. Should be easier to maintain the keyhole and get all the way across with a single electrode.

Wouldn't even pass visual inspection. There's so much undercut on the last cap pass, which he wouldn't even need to do if he didn't grind the hell out of it, which would also fail you at most places, since they typically only let you grind the root to feather, and the rest will be wire wheel only. The probable porosity and slag inclusion from pure chipping and not any brushing could potentially crack it during a test. That's assuming that they even let you go to bend it. But given that no country with safety standards uses Arabic even as a third language, it would probably be fine even if it did crack.

I was taught to grind the bevel first at least 1-2mm to create root face so it would be easier for root pass.

Very nice finished weld. Why no backing for the root pass? Although I never used it, they make a tape you can use for this. The root gap also seemed a bit excessive but I am not certain. I design heavy steel structures and refer to AWS D1.1 for preapproved welds for guidance. Anyhow, nice looking weld.

My sadistic weld instructor had us use 6010 for our certification welds. While the day class got to use 7018. He told us we’d thank him when it came time to get a job because we’d be better welders than the 7018 guys.
