What an era. Johnson's Sierra was clearly putting down some serious power!

Great memories, awesome to watch. I was lucky enough to be there in the pits that day. Never forget it.

What great racing......so much better than what you get today.

The cutting between the onboards and the trackside cameras for the duel was glorious.

Awesome multi category, touring car racing. Exciting.

I was at the Bathurst 1000 today but 1992 was the last time I was there before that. Interesting mix of cars back then. Today it was just Mustangs and Commodores but we still had a great day. The rain held off today not like 1992 when we got soaked.

I could watch another 6 hours of this

Bathurst was so interesting back then with the variety of cars, v8 Supercars I found less exciting

@@Kustom2170 that’s right, the cars are so close in specification that they’re basically the same. So really it comes down to the drivers, rather than the cars themselves unfortunately

@@Kustom2170 It didn't seem to worry everyone when they were racing Bluebirds. Fair!! Holden had a Bloke named Tom running the operation , didn't they? Holden didn't complain when their factory team dominated the Group C. Ask Kevin Bartlett about Holden and the restrictions put on him beating Holden in a Camaro. Holden sat on their arse and expected the competition to just sit and take it. Nissan went back to Japan and built a car that would dominate and win races.

The new skyline couldn't do this. I love the RB'S.

Gee, it seems like only yesterday. And would you like at DJ go! He's pulling away from the Skylines up Mountain Straight. I often wondered who made the fastest Sierras ? If it was Andy Rouse, Rudi Eggenburger, or Dick Johnson ? Well, I'd say that by 1992, it was definitely Dick Johnson who held that honour. It a pity Rudi Eggenburger is no longer with us. I think it would have made great TV to have seen Rouse, Eggenburger and Johnson looking over each others cars, comparing notes, swapping stories, and debating who made the worlds fastest Cossie.

It’s not really who made the fastest Sierra or the most powerful - it’s about finishing with the quickest car. Rudi said to me we could run with 900hp but the head gasket or turbo would eventually blow.

Johnson sierra was super quick

Used to love this racing, now don’t even bother.

The V8 Supercars is in Europe a most underated championship of the stock-touring car. I Enjoy this race of down under land.

Yep they shuld have put turbos on the V8's but no insted thay just got the rulles changed, I will say tho the GTR's shuld have been restricted a bit more and who knows Ford may have relesed a run of Esscort cosworth RS 500's in Australia then the GTR would have had a battel :) O well

Bill D It's easy to see why they were banned when watching this, they were faced with so many penalties; yet they are still leading the pack. It's great that Nissan came up with such a awesome car.

BFMR1062 The Nissan R32 got very heavily restricted in the 1992 championship, the got a 100kg sandbag which brought the car to about 1,500kg In weight, and they limited the amount turbo boost that the turbo could produce, which gave the car about 100hp lest than last year, and on top of that they made the width of the tiers skinnier. That’s why the GTR wasn’t as fast in 1992 and the Ford rs 500 keeper running away on the straight

The V8 boys were not the problem. The media wanted to control racing and take the administration away from the ARDC who were the original organisers. You can thank Channel 10 for the destruction of the Australian racing. I still have my 1992 HSV GTS Commodore.

@@klayshotter ride height as well...the GTR had so so many restrictions on it..Richards actually said that if they put any more weight in the boot he wouldnt drive it because it was getting dangerous...the back end was wanting to come around the front.

Looks bad ass

650hp GTR and Dicky is just walking away from it on the straights. Fastest Sierras in the world at that time.

yep, those sierras were pushing about 600 horse and were a lot lighter than the GTRs, just a shame they werent 4wd too

Rumour had it that DJ started the race with only 1/3rd full fuel to lighten the load for the first 15 laps in the hope of setting a lead and frightening the R32 into some kind of panic/mistake.

Nissan doing what Audi did. They probably got mad they lost to a German sedan with their 300ZX in Trans Am and IMSA GTO.

Well at 3:05 behind the Mazda sign there is a Ford flag. That's me. Bit of useless information there. At the end of the race I was slightly under the champagne. The tv didn't pick it up but a lot of beer cans were being thrown at Richards and Skaife. Also when Richards called the crowd a pack of ******** there was no speakers switched on therefore no one knew. I found out later. I did feel sorry for the Nissan team how they were treated by the fans. This was the Bathurst that killed Bathurst as we knew it. Nissan was too good and it then became V8 super cars.

And then the director cuts to the pits, where's the keygrip to punch that director in the face "really hard".

A field of cars, not half a grid. And Holden hero Mark Skaife in a Nissan Patrol! Brock and tailshafts,, Cleland made a well known comment when one tried to come through the floor.

In the early laps, no one gives a fuck about stragglers pulling into the pits, we want to watch the early battles at the front, when will they ever learn.

The turbos were always going to come out on top as long as they could hold together. You could pretty much engineer your hp target and maintain a broader, flatter torque range as well. The GTR was pretty much a race engineered car anyway, so any wonder they got removed from the catagory. I loved the V8s and realised myself at the time that fans of the V8s felt technologically cheated with what the V8 camps had to work with. Dont misunderstand me, l always thought the sieras and GTRs were awesome cars but despite the smaller engine capacity, they possessed a sizeable advantage. It aint whinging, its reality.

BS...if the GTR had of had a Holden or Ford badge on it there would have been no issue at all...Both Ford and Holden had race Engineered cars as well...what the hell is a Sierra Cosworth?...what are you talking about...its an obvious whinge. Basically....H and F threatened to pull funds from the sport unless they were guatenteed to WIN...their whole marketing was based on what wins on Sunday sells on Monday. Its a known fact that both Brock and Johnson both test drove GTRs in Japan. Holden and Ford always went around with the idea of..."We got Big V8s...nothing can beat them" they knew it was an advantage...but as soon as something comes along and makes them look silly...they throw a tantrum and take their ball and go home! Also...the whole thing with the V8 bogans being cheated with what the V8 camps had to work with?? Try DECADES OF RACE ENGINEERING...the GTRs had 2 years.

They should have spent more time on the V8s making them better rather than crying and screaming. If your competition gets banned for being too good, that doesn't make you better.

@@tmccann1876 the GTRs were around 600hp+ ....and they were only at the start of their development...and here we are 30 years later and the V8s are only still at that level.

The gtr's were about 1500kg at the time only way the others had a chance

It would have been interesting to bring the all wheel drive Cosworth to see if it could run with the Nissan. The Nissan did not have the HP but my goodness the brakes were magnificent. And the ignorant dolts who witch about the Turbo cars being BOP’d do not understand forced induction. Do some research on forced induction. Then if you continue to hate then there is no hope.

Jonathan Bachman the gtr had plenty of power. It was the rules than restricted them. At 1.9 pounds of boost it was putting out almost 700 hp but they restricted it to 1.3 and then added 100-150 kgs of weight.

@@bazza76d53 great to see you know what was going on...the GTR had the most power...just look at how it pulled away even from DJ's Sierra up the mountain the year before...but couldnt have that! The Sierra carried a Ford badge...so they hobbled the GTR...so much that Richards said he wouldnt drive it if they added anymore weight in the back as it was getting dangerous

@@calais027 um no....its called "Competition" Ford and Holden didnt like competition so they simply got rid of it because they lived by the marketing MOTO of "What wins on Sunday Sells on Monday" ...or...We are taking our ball and going home...they chucked a hissy fit. Simply by allowing the Sierra to dominate for so long proves it...and why did they allow it, because it had a FORD BADGE. How about actually BUILDING a better more competitive car for the world stage? Maybe both of them would have survived...even the Holden brand has now gone...realistically the Dinosaur era of the asthmatic V8 was OVER ...my era of following ATC racing was ( I turned off), after 92 until the Real Bathurst came back with the Liqui Moly 12hr now in February, strangely with NO dinosaur Ford and Holden V8s to be seen (not competitive) . Ford and Holden wich are supposed to be Aussie...solely destroyed Australian Touring Car Racing with the invent of v8 super taxis

The GTR had the most HP of the field...it just got so badly hobbled with boost restrictions and weight added. The AWD drive system in the Sierra version was shite and made the car to heavy and why it was never succesful. The Sierra was at the end of its development and realistically it had an old Cortina block with Cosworth heads and a Turbo...the reason the Blocks were fragile. The GTR was a purpose built touring car from the ground up, producing 600+ hp at the BEGINNING of its development....its normal now to see 800hp GTR road registered cars.

the whale tails on the Sierras and the big kits on the commodores actually did a lot and made a lot of difference. Without those aids, horsepower would be useless and traction would be very hard to find.

Holden would have been better to turbo the VL RB30 rather than the now old V8

Now THIS, this comment i like. Yes now THAT would have been interesting a VL turbo vs, Nissan GTR, vs the Ford Sierra, even though the VL engine is still a Nissan engine but still i would have loved to watch that👍

It was interesting back then. Lots of different cars different brands, 4cyl, 4cyl turbo, 6cyl, 6cyl turbo and v8. And the cars were based on road cars. Now it's complete crap, cars are basically the same with different bodies stuck on. Like slot cars. There's nothing of the road cars used. Boring, pathetic, usually rigged. I used to watch Australian touring car racing, dont bother now.
