Watching this, you can't help but notice smiling people .. There was a LOT less hate in the world back in 1988. People interacted with each other instead of having their face buried in their cell phone. ..

Ahh, back when players seemed like superheroes, and watching AL players facing NL players just felt weird.

The All Star game was so awesome back then because you didn’t get to see baseball stars at all times on cable and online like you do now so this was always so special to see. I haven’t watched an all star game in about 10 years. Sad.

when i think of 1988, im like wow eric davis darryl strawberry, don mattingly, rickey henderson, mark mcgwire, jose canseco, and ok you get the picture.....best days of baseball ever.

Al Michaels got his start in Cincinnati being a Reds announcer and then after being here for 2 years he went to ABC and the rest is history but you ever notice no matter if it's football or baseball he always mention Cincinnati he never fails to mention Cincinnati next time you guys are watching the game with Al Michaels I'm telling you he'll mention Cincinnati at least once

I remember the crowd going wild over Chris Sabo at some point during this game when he got shown on the big screen

The Clark's confuse me at time..............................Will And Jack. Both are similar in statue and play 1st base. And both very fine MLB players.

To be fair, on July 1st, Tony Gwynn only was batting .246. He was going through a prolonged slump. From July 2 to July 23, he would raise his BA to .313. He would bat 41 for 79 in the matter of just over 2 weeks worth of games. He would win yet another batting title in 1988 with a .313 average.

NL should've won this game. My Cardinals each of them that played made big impacts. This was the very start of the new AL trend of victories going from '88 to 2022 thus far. AL from 1988 to this year in 2022 a record of 27-6-1 beginning with this All Star game. Also the old IBM commercials 1:17:18 asking Baseball questions were educational.

I didnt know Doc started another ASG. I thought he only started in 1985.

Knows how Cincinnati fans are so knowledgeable me being a Cincinnati fan and grown up in Cincinnati and I still live here but the players who get The Ovations are the top quality of the game the rest of them so-called All Stars we let him know it especially the f****** Dodgers

Before Cincinnati was destroyed by "urban renewal" the Reds played in the west end and the west end was full of buildings, entertainment and people, it was like Over the Rhine except 4 times the size! Back then the city was alive and there was nothing like a later Reds game and all the people and bars in the neighborhood listening to the game......great vibe and times in Cincinnati until I-75 came through and leveled it all into some factories and a bunch of nothing. Totally destroyed and replaced with nothingness.

Wrong years for Gooden's awards. He was ROY in '84, not, '85; and Cy Young in '85, not '86.

I miss that fast track baseball on AstroTurf.

The 1988 All-Star Game marked the changing of the guard in fact 16 out of the 18 first time All-Stars from the National League were under the age of 30 and Mike Schmidt of the Phillies was not in this All-Star game as Bobby Bonilla won the starting job in fact Schmidt was in decline in his final full season with the Phillies before retiring for good in May of 1989 and was voted on the 1989 All-Star team but did not play and this marked the final All-Star game appearances for three future Hall Of Famers Dave Winfield, George Brett and Gary Carter. The unlikely hero Terry Steinbach who had no business in this All-Star Game responded by hitting a homer off of the Mets Dwight Gooden and then came within inches of becoming only the second man ever to hit a grand slam in the All-Star Game. Other facts from this game was pitching and a resurgence of Dennis Eckersley would set then a single-season record for saves in a season at that time with 45, plus long-time journey man Cleveland Indians closer Doug Jones set the single-season franchise record with 37 saves. This was the first where the American League would go on a six-game winning streak including winning 7 out of the next 8 from the National League from 1986-1993, and they are 23-6-1 against the National League since 1988.

Larkin was a better hitter, and just as good if not better with the glove. He was a great player to grow up emulating. Just a damn good player. There should be a picture of Larkin in the dictionary next to shortstop.

Ozzie Smith was a solid fielder and a true showman. You have to remember that these games weren't just for fans, they were a spectacle meant for anyone to enjoy. Die hard baseball fans could nitpick each player but your average person just loved seeing the occasional backflip on the field :-)
