This was my second race I attended. Free tickets from a cousin who worked at a radio station. Damn backstretch seats. I was just a kid, had to have a friend's dad take us out there in that madness, and come back and pick us up. My hero Pearson crashed out of two and stopped in front me. That sucked. A Pearson fan from the mid 70s, finally got to see him live, and a few more times, but never was really competitive after the Hoss Ellington ride. Thanks to KZread I can relive the best days of Nascar tho.

Classy racing by Elliot. He could have given a little bump and run to bonnet at the end for his first win but he chose to be a gentleman.

Given how great he was at almost every other big speedway in his career, it's hard for anyone to believe that this was as close as Bill Elliott would ever get to winning the Coca-Cola (World) 600. He would win the 500-mile fall race at Charlotte twice (1984, '87), but much like Cale Yarborough, who won the fall race three times but never won the 600, this would be the one significant race that Bill Elliott would never win. It's also interesting to note that Elliott also never won the All-Star Race at Charlotte, either, as his win in that event came the one time it wasn't held at Charlotte.

In 2000, he dominated the first two segments of the All-Star race, and then in the weirdest thing I've ever seen, Dale Junior's car became a rocket ship and Bill's went away. He had it won in 1987 before Ironhead struck...

Ernies Ford engines had a higher power band which gave Bill a advantage on big speedways.. The All star engines were all time bombs that the Gm guys could build up but didn't have to last, so E Elliotts engines had no advantage in the All star race. Nascar changed the engine rules due to Elliotts dominance fearing people would get bored watching him lap the field!

He missed winning the 1987 Winston because of the two aysewholes Bodine and Earnhardt beating on him and trying to wreck him. He clearly had the best car that day.

Sometimes when track conditions are different from the norm, a car manufacturer body design which are not of the sleeker, slicker design that might resemble a shoebox creates downforce hence runs faster through the corners and out does competition probable not possible yes through the decades I've seen it virtually the only explanation for winning versus not?? I'm just saying? I hope my message doesn't get lost in my lack of proper English!

Charlotte as many of the tracks would simulcast the radio broadcast during the race over the P.A., with the track P.A. cutting in when it needs to during the race.
