I was there 7 hour race between 2 long rain delays . Great race ! I hate that Pearson , Cale , and Earnhardt had the accident it would have added to a spectacular race . I loved it !!! I was pulling for David Pearson and the Hoss Ellington Hawaiian Tropic Chevrolet.

I miss the old concrete stands on the backstretch. You had to duck beer cans and chicken bones, but that's where us poor boys sat in the 80s.

Those big bodied cars had cool dripping off of them! The #21 Neil Bonnet Ford was bad to the bone. Prettiest car in the track that day. Sr.’s head damn near hanging out the driver’s window opening laid back in that thing. Those guys were badass.

Benny Parsons is vastly underrated as a Wheelman in the history of NASCAR. While he had (& Won) an awesome duel with DW in this race, for me his slugfest (he Won) at Ontario Motor Speedway in 79 was his crowning jewel! He, along with The King, Bobby Allison, Cale & Buddy Baker fought a duel to the death over the last 10 laps, swapping the lead multiple times each lap & came to the checkered flag 5 cars all wadded up in a 3 car space! Ontario was a replica of Indy, big, fast & very little banking in the four corner's & I sat in the Front-stretch grandstands and watched BP Win back to back races in 79-80, The guy was a GREAT Wheelman fo'sho!! 💪🤠👍

I don't think he was underrated, there were just so many guys who accomplished so much in his era. He is in the hall of fame so he isn't overlooked except for the younger crowd who either only knew him as an announcer or don't know him at all.

The other huge battle Parsons had was Pocono in 1977
1980 was when I first became interested in NASCAR. To me the 1977 Chevy Monte Carlo is one of the best looking race cars ever. My dad had a street version, and how I wish I had gotten it when I turned 16 in 1982.

Why is it so interesting when I feel like I’m eavesdropping on a private conversation between people you normally don’t hear conversating as normal human beings? Discussions back-and-forth with the broadcast team and the producers is so fascinating. No I haven’t been into NASCAR for that long but Keb Squires voice is so distinctive and enjoyable. I was driving myself nuts trying to figure out where I heard him. He was the announcer for the movie Rad. “Give it to Jones Cru Jones wins it!”

I was 15 years old then and NASCAR was a big part of my familys entertainment. My uncle used to take me to Martinsville every year. My oldest brother had one of those HUGE sat. dishes with a modified chip. He could pick up hundreds of channels and we could watch any NASCAR race that was being aired. We had many a good time watching the races then. Most of them have passed on now so this brings back a lot of pleasant memories. Hard to believe this was over 40 years ago ! I always did like Tommy Gales Thunderbird , I thought it was a great looking race car.

*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1980 WORLD 600 (13 of 31):* #2 Dale Earnhardt (1844 points with 3 wins, Chevrolet) #43 Richard Petty (-102 with 2 win, Chevrolet) #11 Cale Yarborough (-137 with 1 win, Chevrolet) #15 Bobby Allison (-195 with 1 win, Ford) #88 Darrell Waltrip (-215 with 2 wins, Chevrolet) #90 Jody Ridley (-278, Chevrolet) #27 Benny Parson (-279, Chevrolet) #47 Harry Gant (-384, Chevrolet) Meanwhile, Richard Childress (Chevrolet) was 11th. Despite his great 1979 season, Joe Millikan (Chevrolet) had to scale down to a partial schedule for 1980. Part-timer Buddy Baker (Chevrolet) won the Daytona 500 and the Alabama 500 while David Pearson won the Rebel 500 after taking over the Chevrolet #1 Donnie Allison used to race.. Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. I’m also using the unsponsored names of the races. In Charlotte’s case, the early race was the World 600 while the Fall one was the American 500.
