I grew up in Daytona Beach and went to Longstreet elementary. When I went back to school I was talking about this with my friends and the teacher took me aside and had to speak to my parents because they had the audacity to allow their child to go to a NASCAR race and witness NASCAR in the 70s 😁

4:12 Wow! And that was just a Stockcar race,I can't imagine what children have to deal with in today's society, the what's right and what's wrong has become so blurry,I lean on the Bible,I've read from genesis to revelations, dont mention Stockcar racing, but it does say something about the worship of riches and that's became NASCAR's down fall.

While underrated as a race (there were 37 lead changes, with much of that action taking place between laps 75-110, mostly between Baker and Yarborough), this race would turn out to be a key race in NASCAR history for a number of reasons, the most notable of which being that it was the race that rejuvenated Bobby Allison's career. Allison, who'd been one of the top drivers in the early 70s, hadn't won a race since the 1975 Southern 500, and had been fired by Roger Penske at the end of the 1976 season under circumstances similar to the ones that brought Allison to Penske's NASCAR team in the middle of the 1974 season (when Penske fired Gary Bettenhausen). He then struggled throughout the 1977 season in a self-owned AMC Matador, and many thought his career might have been over. But Bud Moore gave him another chance, and starting 33rd (which is ironic in it's own way, given that he ran in two Indianapolis 500s for Penske in the mid-70s), he moved up through the field, and much as Richard Petty had done in the 1973 Daytona 500, he watched Cale Yarborough and Buddy Baker burn their cars up, and picked up the pieces of what was left (Yarborough finished the race down on power, much as he did in 1975, and Baker dropped out near the end). Allison's win effectively gave his career new life, and from this race through the 1983 season, only Darrell Waltrip, who he battled for the championship for three consecutive years (1981-'83), won more races. He would go on to win both the Daytona 500 and Firecracker 400 three times each, all after his 40th birthday, including the final two wins of his career (the 1987 Firecracker 400 and 1988 Daytona 500). It would also prove to be Bud Moore's only Daytona 500 win as a car owner, though his cars ran up front often, finishing second four times (1961, '65, '73, and '80) third four times (1962, '77, '92-'93), and winning the pole with Darel Dieringer in 1965.

"The Dean of Auto Racing," Chris Economaki, once again was astonishingly able to see three months into the future and tell us that A.J. Foyt would miss the 1978 Indy 500. Um...just a sec...what's that??? Oh...I've just been informed that Foyt did run the Indy 500 that year. 😂

RESULTS of the ONLY PREVIOUS RACE of 1978 and OTHER DATA: · Cale Yarborough won in Riverside ahead of Parsons, Pearson, Bonnett, Marcis, McGriff, Insolo, Holbert, Canada's Roy Smith and DK Ulrich · Petty got 16th after some rear axle problems, Childress was 20th after some repairs, Waltrip 23rd (transmission), Gordon 25th (clutch) and Bobby Allisson 30th (engine) · Yarborough, Donnie Allison and Buddy Baker all switched to Oldsmobile and Bobby Allison moved to Ford · Almost no Indycar/ChampCar drivers took the start of this Daytona 500 (my guess is that the Phoenix race a month later had something to do with that) · Janet Guthrie and Canada's Earl Ross are probably the only 2 notable DNQs of this event
