Interesting, double roller chain as well

I acquired a 75 if I remember correctly 440 motorhome engine several years back It had never been into. Had a cast crank but had a windage tray, 6 pack rods and roller chain in it. Also a dual snorkel air cleaner sitting on top. I guess the industrial engines in later years got "special" parts.

Nice find Thad. The engine looks remarkably clean. Definitely a good core. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

Good score. I bought a 440 out of a '75 heavy duty truck. I was assuming it would have heavy rods too. Unfortunately it had been rebuilt at some point. It did have a standard steel crank but the rods had been changed out for regular LY units. None of the stamped numbers matched, for instance there were 2 #3 rods and 2 #6 rods and none were in the corresponding cylinders. From what I've read all H.P. 440's got the heavy rods starting in 1970 as well as any truck motor with a steel crank. Getting harder and harder to find every year.

Not according to Chryslers engine book, the 71 thru 73 440 hp's were supposed to be the only ones with the sixpack rods and internally balanced steel crank, the six packs were externally balanced. I was surprised to see a truck engine with that setup. But then who knows for sure what was done on the assembly lines, or was this engine done by someone other than factory as in parts scavenged from an hp engine out of a junkyard.

Correct 1967davethewave. ALL 440 engines with steel crank & "sixpack" rods have the SAME Harmonic Balancer. Whether it is a 440T (truck) 440HP, or genuine 440 "sixpack" engine, they all carry the SAME balancer. AFTER 1973 the RB "440" had a CAST crank & carried the rounded EXTERNAL balancer. I have 4 or 5 of these engines at all times.

Not true according to Chryslers engine book part number P4349340. The 72 & 73 440 HP engines used sixpack rods and a special crankshaft which is not interchangeable with other 440 engines and it is internally balanced. I have a 73 HP with that setup. The sixpacks were externally balanced. At least that is what Chryslers engine book says.@@shanew.williams

@@stephenwest798 This was a 440 out of a medium duty truck. You know, the one with the weird heads that use a totally different exhaust manifold. I don't have the information to research any of this but I had read somewhere before I bought that engine that the medium duty stuff stayed with steel cranks and used the heavier rods as well. Of course my engine had regular LY rods but they weren't numbered in order and there were repeats as I stated earlier. So I don't know for sure and I also don't remember the source of the original information. I did a lot of drinking in the 80's. Maybe it's affected my memory.

I did my share of drinking in sixties thru 2016 and then slowed down so my memory isn't perfect either which is why I bought the engine book; it seems to have a better memory than mine. That said we will never know about every engine that came down the assembly line or what happened to them between then and now, but it is fun to open one up and see what you have.@@1967davethewave

A Mopar buddy of mine scored a early '70's short block assembly JUST like this a few years back! He removed the Motorhome Front sump pan to see the SAME rods! AND his had the standard steel crank balancer too... NO SIX PACK BALANCER! How did they balance these truck engines??? I would have sworn it was a SHAKER when last run... What gives?

Now that I've got my 318 dialed to perfection - and mean Literally Perfect, somehow a 440 swap keeps creeping into my mind. You're not making this easy - H A ! 😆 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGWGrrOlaJXMZKg.html

Wow...what a beauty. I'd just enjoy that combo but accumulate the parts for a swap, then one day down the road when it's time for a rebuild do it then.
