You never know what you will see on a sunny Saturday at Nick's. This week, there is a 390 for a '67 Mustang on the Dyno, and one of the first ever HEMI's in a Dodge rolling in on a trailer.

Back in '54 when I was in high school a good buddy of mine's father was a Dodge Plymouth dealer, and I got a chance to ride in one of those Dodge 500 Royales. Beautiful car. I'll never forget it.
Holy moley, that Coronet convertible sounds and runs AMAZING and she’s not even dialed in yet! Incredible!!
This Channel and Nick, is better than any TV reality Hot Rod Show. Love it!

Thanks, Dennis.
Having the opportunity to hang out at Nick's garage is like being in mechanic school, always learning something new and exciting.
Nick is like the Maestro leading an Orchestra when he's in the Dyno-room, and his Orchestra lives inside these engines that he makes them sound so perfect, What an engine builder he is and what an ear he has to hear every little thing in the engine, you don't learn that in any school, that's yrs and yrs of hard work and experience.
Another enjoyable episode at the old school home of new muscle that is Nick's Garage.
I love those old Dodge HEMI's. Simple and bulletproof.
I love seeing Nick when he gets back from driving that Cornet. There is no drug that can give you that!
Put a 428 crank in it for 410 inches. That's what wakes up a 390! Worked for me...
You sir are the mopar king! What i love about you and your garage is you guys are real! Down to earth.you nick seem to be a kind good hearted man! Thats loves what he does like old saying do something you love and you never work a day in your life! Keep up the awsome work !
boy that 4bbl opening up on top of that perfectly tuned 440 wuuuuuuuuaggggghhhhhhh erp, chirp! gets the blood flowing ! can't wait to see how that old 500 turns out too. thanks again guys! ☆☆☆
Nick, back in High School Auto Shop our instructor at the time had several Mopar's. Most of them were Chrysler Imperial's. He had at least six or seven. One day he brought his 56' Imperial to class and asked a few of us students to remove and disassemble the original 354 Hemi, which was only 24 years old at the time. The engine went to an outside machine shop and school ended before it was returned to the shop for assembly. It was a great experience taking an original 'wide block' apart and the similarities the block itself had with the 'LA' small block were surprising. In fact, the 13600 gear drive from Milodon is the same for both early hemi and the 'LA' engines too. The big difference was the amount of nickel in the block and the eight bolt flange on the crankshaft, along with the heavy cast iron heads. I never got to see the engine run but never forgot the experience of taking one apart first hand.
Great to see another installment of Nicks Garage. I did my apprenticeship in a shop like this. Brings back a lot of fond memories. Thanks.
One of the rarest cars in existence just entered your shop
I'm gonna say about 260 ponies on that old hemi. Good video guys!

150 hp from the factory. The next generation was 180 hp. They only made a small batch of the 1954 Pace cars. That year! This car brand new in yellow and black is a great combo with the baby Hemi! Shawn
The best car show ever...
I always thought of the Ford 390 as a real anchor. Can't wait to see what Nick can do with it. Hope the old Hemi goes on the dyno as well.
Looking forward to seeing how this old hemi goes. When I eventually make it to Canada I will be dropping by Nick's Garage to say G'day :-)

dimadee. You are welcomed to come anytime.
A 1954 Dodge pace car still has its original wheels what a real treasure.
The '54 Dodge is very rare. And it still wears the rare factory wire wheels. I'll be keeping an eye on this project.
I learned to drive when I was 12 years old in a 390 powered Country Sedan. "Drifting" hadn't been invented yet, we just called it "getting sideways" in a turn.

My first car i drove was our family car it was a 67 Ford Galaxy 500 with 390 engine, man that thing could fly,
Love the sound of that Coronet!
Potates 2000 looks like good place to get your hearing back after visiting the dyno room, another long term landmark!!!
Technically speaking, when doing a compression test on any engine there’s a three-step series that you should check, one is the normal way that u did & the 2nd is the W.O.T. test & the 3rd is with a little oil n each of the cylinders w/ a W.O.T. & you’ll get 3 different readings of numbers on that compression test, that u performed ! “I like ur style sir” Later Stew.
My buddies and I just got done for the day working on one of our 64 studebaker Zip vans. We sat down to eat grilled peanut butter sandwiches and pickles. (with beer of course) But after seeing that video we wanted one of those sandwiches and fries instead! Please Nick,..only show bad ass cars and engines!

Mycatz2fat. OK, just cars and engines. AAHHH, OK.
Beautiful Dodge Pace Car can’t wait to see how Nick does a first gen.
Always nice videos from Nick`s garage. 1954 Dodge Royal Indy pacecar, very cool. Only 701 built and this one seems to have the original Motor Wheels wire wheels.
Awesome as usual, always some of the coolest cars around. wish I lived closer. Wanted to mention at about the 6:55 mark during the deceleration right under the coil wire at the front of the manifold it appears to be a little arcing or just a reflection perhaps. Can't get enough of your garage, ever think of a live stream? Prob not a good idea I suppose, I would be late for work all the time. See you next time.. Cheers
Just 701 1954 Indy 500 Dodges made. All were yellow convertibles, all with Kelsey Hayes wire wheels, all with Offenhauser aluminum intakes and a four barrel on a Red Ram 241 Hemi (this one oddly has a two barrel cast iron intake, might be a past engine substitution. Definitely worth restoring.
That Hemi Royal is so Cool !
Ohhhh Man I love ragtops,.....& that 54 Dodge Royal is truly a GEM....I had a 56 New Yorker with a Hemi single throat carb.....ughhh....but it was a quiet, solid riding car.....didnt even heard rumble strips when you rode over them....
now you get to play with old school hemi!!
Thanks Nick you always put on a good show
Nick is a Mopar man through and through but not too proud to help out other classic car enthusiasts.
The 5.0 Mustang is super clean, it's a nice little pocket rocket...and the Dodge Royale is just bada**....
Your line " Here we go" is classic also used by Jerry Miculek the Smith & Wesson shooting expert.
That Dodge Royal is great. I want to see everything you do to this car from disassembly and rebuild of the motor to restoration and final product. Really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
That Coronet scene...watched it about ten times
My 70 plymouth has been sitting for a long time . So many circumstances....maybe one day. Too many valid reasons. But the dream lives on, like the ones I owned long ago. Interesting engine builds and vehicles. Enjoy these a lot!
I have a '54 NewYorker Deluxe, With the 331 Hemi. The Deluxe came with the Firepower Hemi, 4bbl and dual exhaust, basically the same package that came on the '55 300. The car itself is not much of a survivor, but in a perfect world ill get a guy like Nick to redo the heart and I'll use it in a funky Mopar of somekind.... My '88 Ramcharger comes to mind....
If I recall correctly, the first (original) 'Hemi' was the DeSoto 'Fire Dome' . . . which Dodge purchased. And this Pace Car is truly remarkable, still having the original motor and wire wheels. Truly a rarity.
Woo-hoo! Great to hear that Coronet with the loud pedal squashed to the floor! Very curious to see the process and final outcome of that 390 as well...should be a stout engine if built correctly. My uncle had one in a late 60s Galaxie and it was a beast!
As a little kid, sticking to my dad's side when he was talking cars, I had a great memory for what cubic inch and make an engine was. Mind you this was the 60s (I was 8 years old) Hot rods (the ancestors of the muscle car) were usually older cars, 30s to 40s (place WWII here) and 45s till 1962 ( place Vietnam here) when alot of gear heads came home. And it happened, a 36 Plymouth coupe with a 1952 Hemi in it. Hoodless, fenderless, hand made headers, and a dual quad intake. I couldn't look away from it. State of the street art of it's day. From that day forward my Dad scowerd the junkyards for a hemi. No way, nope, ain't seen one and how about a wedge? It seems all the racers sucked up all the stock block hemi's up. (As well as early 6-71 superchargers) It's good to see one in it's natural state. (Mind you when that car was brand new it was STILL 17 years before dad was looking for one) He got a deal on his 63' imperial with the 413. The wedge fire was in ignited in my back yard. And it burned me... Ever burn you wrist on a 440s exhaust manifold changing the plugs on a hot engine? I know you did. The muscle car will never die. Tommy

the indy 500 is incredible!
The 54 Royal Indy Pace Car is a great find they only made 701 of them. 354 red ram hemi is still in it too. The wire wheels are worth a ton of money these days I saw one at a swap meet and it was priced a 3,000 bucks My Dad had a 54 Desoto with the 354 4 barrel hemi with new automatic trans they offered.

that 54 dodge is going to be awesome..keep us posted on it nick.....love your work..
Can't wait to see the progress on that engine with the bad compression and and the cornet
The Coronet is great. I'm really looking forward to the 1st gen. hemi.
I was 9 years old when that Dodge was new. Later when I got my license in 1960 there were some of these early hemi dodges around(never drove or even rode in one). My father bought a new 56 chevy with the 205hp 265 ci. v8/power glide. That thing really ran great. Made my purchase of my first 57 230hp 283 an easy decision. put it into a 48 chevy 2door style master with a 3 speed standard trans and a 3:23 ratio 50 olds rear end. 820 15 tires on back. it would go an honest 120mph(2 marked miles in 60 seconds). God was watching over me or those 4 ply rayon 600-16 tires on the front would have blown out at that speed(dumb kid). My friend had a beautiful 57 olds super 88 (371 4 barrel with 4 speed jet away hydro) nice fast car at the time. My chevy beat it every time and so badly that my friend sold olds and bought a 58 corvette. my friend is long gone but his son has the 58 corvette. These old cars are real memory machines. Thanks Nick for all you and your crew do.
Wow, I go and feed my animals and suddenly a video, livin the good life here

Even tho I never have been a Chrysler Fan per-say, I'm learning because of Nick. I wonder if he's ever worked on a 1961 300G ? The first production car I ever rode in over 150 mph. Love your work & hell of a lot of respect for NICK!

aaah tex. Sorry, I had never worked on a 1961 300G. Must be something special.
I had a 92 mustang gt convertible. My first car. I loved that thing. The only thing i didnt like was the top, when driving on the freeway i could feel air coming in and the noise from the air.
Always great cars on this channel! I hope to see more of the 390 Ford rebuild! Thanks!

That pace car when restored is worth over $100,000, those are the original Kelsey Hayes wheels and that's an original factory continental kit on the back, it was considered Chrysler's first hot rod, very rare and very valuable.
Awesome! I wish I could get food like that in Mesa, AZ.
I just noticed further down that someone else had made a comment on the wheels too. I think I got my answer. Love your videos, keep up the great work.

Hey Nick, you're not going to believe what's currently on the MotorTrend Channel - damned if they don't have a '54 pace car sitting in an Oregon junkyard. It's pretty heavily chewed up, but if your customer is missing any really rare parts, it might be worth the time to try to dig up the name of the junkyard and get in touch. Motor and custom intake are there, wire wheels are missing, body looks like swiss cheese.
that 1967 Coronet sure has got some balls !
Love that 54 Convertible. I was the first guy in Australia to Run an early Hemi in Australia on the Salt lakes.(354,injected,13-1 comp.) That Dodge would be a 315 or 325? . Lots of the LA parts such as bearings and ignition fit them. The 54 needs a twin 4Bbl set up to really look the part and lose that trans... ha ha. Yasu!.
@ThePaulv12
6 жыл бұрын
Mercmad it's got an early, early hemi in it. It might be one of the motors that had the bellhousing cast onto the back of the motor. The Chrysler divisions each had their own twin rockershaft version of a hemi and later they were standardized into the 331/354/392 iirc. I think the pace car had a 241 (or something)
@Mercmad
6 жыл бұрын
I had a think, and it will be a 245 Red ram. a baby hemi. The only Hemis to have the big block extension were 331's . I had a pair of those too. The only difference ,apart from the smaller capacity was the extension for the trans fluid coupler . i had one bored to 354 cubes which was a very sweet running engine. The guy who has it now runs it in a channeled Model A roadster .in the early days of Nitrous on the strips, the 331 heads were used on the 392's because of the shorter intake runner and thicker material around the valves. Nitrous would head castings with the heat of combustion. The single rail rocker gear engines were polysphere ,more like todays wedge combustion chamber designs, very efficient engines too. Theres a whole list of different versions of those too.Canadian and American .
Just watched a junkyard episode on the Motor Trend Channel. Same Dodge Indy Pace car. 4-barrel 264 cid Hemi . Factory installed aluminum Ofenhauser intake. 701 production number total. Estimated value $110-120k Murican restored. Looks like this one has the original Kelsy-Hayes chrome wire rims. What a historic project for Nicks Garage. Eh !

The HEMI Pace care is cool
Wow that yellow one is a RARE fish. It still has the original pale yellow color, the spare tire rack on /in bumper, and the wire wheels which you never see. Thats an Indy Pace car model.
I see the Dodge Royal was sold at C. R. Fritsch Dodge Millville NJ. About 30 miles from me, out of business now!
I want to see that gt500 running sooo bad 😩
That grub at the end really got my mouth watering! save some for me! ;-P
If I ever get to Quebec ,i'm going to see Nick,Lord willing. Always enjoy the videos and i don't even have a muscle car. peace Nick fromSteve from Cape Breton
That Indy Pace first generation Hemi, would look great in Pearl White and Barcelona Red,,sure the Royale is a beauty,,,,
That was a cool dodge
Still trying to get you your own show on Velocity! Keep the vids coming!
Another great video guys! One of my best, closest friends, in Sweden phoned me a few days ago, the bastard has just bought himself a beautiful '57 Chrysler 300C....with less than 45000 miles on it! Damn I'm jealous! 😉😄😂

I got all that mechanics of the mustang in a 64 Studebaker wagonaire . Sleeper !
We didn't know he was in Canada, they are very knowledgeable and do excellent work
My 62 Galaxy 500 , 390 police intercepter had 375 HP and 3 on tree with overdrive at 175 MPH she was turning 2700 RPM would run faster , but I was sacred of the tube type tires . l got some NASCAR wheels and tires from Holman and Moody had cousin that was a engine builder there . They treated me like I was a part of their outfit , great bunch of guy's
to show how classy Nick is the fact he never asks for money or boast patreon..He earns his money the hard way..with ultimate engine/auto repair...i have gotten sick and tired of the endless shilling by others asking for support when some of them are making hundreds of thousands a year..spare me..anyways..it is my opinion..and i will support Nick by viewing and commenting and buying an occasional item from his shop...
