Oldsmobile Heaven (with some Mopar and Pontiac sprinkled in!) | Barn Find Hunter - Ep. 35

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Following a lead from an owner on last episode of Barn Find Hunter, Tom Cotter continues his oil-country campaign, unearthing more dust-covered classics in the desert of Midland, Texas. This week starts with dusting off a couple of Oldsmobiles, but Tom uncovers a whole bounty of American metal. In the shed and out back, the property showcases a landscape of Eighty-Eights and Cutlasses, as well. Lined bumper-to-bumper between the Texas shrubbery, this menagerie of lopsided grills and sunbaked hoods is now kept by the family of the late collector, and among these American gems, Tom investigates a Dodge Dart 270 and a Pontiac wagon, eventually coming upon a Plymouth Road Runner with bizarre scars of mods past.

I love that Oldsmobile wagon, it doesn't take much imagination to see that being a real stand out car at any show. The Rocket 88 Club coupe would be a really pretty car with just the original paint reinstated and some mechanical fettling too, plus a re-trim...

I bought a 1950 Olds,4 door that wasn't running, sitting in a guy's yard. Back when i was in Jr. High,as a project. I rebuilt the motor,as well as the steering & some suspension. It had an automatic transmission, which i didn't like, but was a cool transportation at the time. But,when i saw a 2 door coupe, with a V-8 & a 3 speed transmission,i knew i had to have one,but the guy that had what i wanted wouldn't trade or sell me his car,so,i had to find something else. This is the first time i have seen a complete one in many moons. Good luck to the new owner!

There will come a time when four door cars and kids will make the connection... Look at the rice rockets they are buying! I see it happening where a kid builds a four door with his dad and I mean every piece and part was super cool polished stainless and upholstery, door panels visors, headliner. He drove it in his senior year. He grew up working on his 55 ford fairlane and it was damn nice.Everything stock except some nice dual exhaust that barked real nice. 272 y block. He even built the motor as far as assembly but they did have the block boiled and heads surfaced but he lapped the valves... a real inspiration.

A true barn find!!! Hello Hagerty Barn Find folks, I have a 1968 Pontiac LeMans which I factory ordered. It was in Kansas and Wyoming until 2012 and is now in Rhode Island. It is Nordic Blue, has the 350 hp engine, bucket seats, vinyl top, chrome trim, Pontiac wheels and trim rings, Hurst 3 speed on the floor. It has 97,000 original miles and the engine was rebuilt at 90,000 by Allen Automotive in Chanute, Kansas, who work on race cars in the 4 state area. It has a newer vinyl roof, new carpet. Repainted 2006 with original matte paint. Lots of character. I love my car. Do you think you'd like to feature it in your show???

I bought a house with a 3 story barn, you could drive into the middle level. When I bought it I became the owner of a 1959 Chevy Nomad 348 car. It had a 350 in it but it was still darn cool. Interior was mint with cool bronze vinyl with white paint, only issue rust-wise was the rockers and repros were in the back. I ended up selling it to the guy that took the 348 out of it for his drag car. Growing up (late 70s, early 80s) I had a friend that was on my hockey team and he lived with his grandparents. His grandfather had a car collection in his barn, easily 20 cars. We used to play hide and seek in that barn hiding in some cool cars. I remember a BMW Isetta, multiple 356 Porsches, a Citroen (the one with the turning headlights and the hydro suspension...DS or something) and a bunch of other Euro cars. It was pretty cool. Love your show!

The rust in the top of the fenders of the road runner is due to the fact that they either eliminated the inner fender, or the inner fender was so cheap in material that it rusted first, then allowed the rain waters and road sand to blast the underneath of the fenders, right above the front tires. My '70 duster did the same thing. It was just Mopar being cheap on the assembly line.

Geez, Tom! Why kick the four-doors? Some of the most fun I've had have been w/four door cars...I've outrun a '85 5.0 Mustang w/a '75 Bel-Air, and raced a Lincoln Mk.VII w/a ''76 Caprice Estate Wagon - even w/a detuned 454, "The Icebox" was able to blow the Lincoln's doors off. That being said, that blue 88 business coupe would make a nice period hot rod/ratrod..cleanup the interior, clearcoat the patina, shove a blown 350/350 drivetrain in her, & smoke some rubber.

Tom said, "You don't see many Business Coupes". The coupe is an "88" Club Coupe which were all made with a back seat. A Business Coupe generally does not have a back seat and in 1949-1950 Olds did not make a coupe without a rear seat. Yes, Tom, you changed it to "Club Coupe" as you departed the overhang.

Correct, the Olds version was only used in Olds and had its own Olds designed heads with valve covers sticking out at 45 degree angle. Buick valve covers went straight up to mimic the earlier Buick 'nailhead' iron V8's in appearance, but they weren't nailheads. The vertical valve covers made sparkplug access easier in small, narrow engine bay British cars. Pontiac used the Buick version, as did Rover/MG/Triumph/TVR/Morgan, etc. Buick designed the 215"/3.5L aluminum V8 and it first appeared in a 1951 Buick Harley Earle concept car. Australian Revco-Brabham created a Formula 1 winning version of that engine because it was the lightest V8 available. TVR had a 5.0L version. Hotrodders stretch it to 5.2L/318" version. Articles on how to make the larger versions are available online.

A lot of younger people today prefer four doors to two doors, so don't dismiss them if they're easily restorable. '55 to '57 Olds four-door hardtops are really cool cars.

The V8 in the Land-Rover Discovery 2 would be badged as a 4.0, but I believe it was the same cubic capacity as the 3.9 that was used in the Range Rover Classic (the original Range Rover,) they just badged it as a 4.0 to make it sound like the Range Rover P38 had something new in the smaller petrol engine as well as the 4.6 which was new but was a lot less reliable due to its larger bore size causing cooling and block issues. The first-generation Discovery remained badged as a 3.9 until the end of production. You're about right for the time period, that Disco 2 looks to be about 2000-2002 from the front end styling (it's a pre-facelift vehicle as it doesn't have the secondary round reflectors in the headlights) and wheel design on it, plus there are other body features that weren't seen on early Disco 2s ('98-2000.) A lot of people in the UK always refer to the Rover V8 as having been a Buick engine, forgetting that even back then GM shared engines across manufacturer ranges so it was probably seen in as many Oldsmobiles as it was Buicks which really makes it as much an Oldsmobile engine as it was a Buick, even if it was developed by the Buick engineers. It's a shame GM didn't persist with it as it developed into a damn good engine which is as famous in the UK and Europe as the small block Chevy 350 (5.7 litre) is in the US and it probably saw service in more vehicles than the Chevy, everything from very fast sports cars to vans and, of course, some of the toughest 4x4s ever made, plus a lot of the police cars that used to give naughty motorists nightmares...

It was a great engine, used in some lovely cars. A guy i know had a old rover p5b with this engine, lovely car. Don't think it was used in triumphs though, probably should have been, certainly in the stag.

+ro eng Ah, the Rover P5B, the British prime minister's favourite transport for over a decade and a half. Lovely cars. You're sort-of right, they should have used the Rover V8 in the Stag, the Triumph 3.0 V8 was technically a better engine but sadly BL technology wasn't up to building them right at the time, hence why it became known as the Triumph Snag. Triumph did use the Rover V8 in the TR8, and the works TR7 V8 rally cars, though it's understandable a lot of people forget them as by far the greatest volume of factory TR8s were sold in the US with only a handful (less than 100 I believe) sold in the UK and probably even fewer, if any, sold in Europe as new cars...

Furthermore, the Olds version was only used in Olds and had its own Olds designed heads with valve covers sticking out at 45 degree angle.

Wiki. 'The Triumph TR8 did not use Triumph's own single overhead cam V8 as found in the Stag due to its weight and service record but instead shared its Rover V8 engine with the Rover SD1.'

I think those early fifties car should all be worth to be preserved with the two tone paint and all these accessories of that time. There is sports coupes enough on the market. But these woody family cars are far more special. In Britain the Woodys based on Rolls Royce or Daimler are far more valuable than the normal cars.

Don't knock 4 doors if its all there fix it up. I'd rather have a 4 door get the whole family in to ride around. They are more unique to see because everyone has a 2 door😔.
