Why Did So Many People Buy An Oldsmobile Cutlass

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we zoom through the generations of the Oldsmobile Cutlass and go over some of it’s features. Oldsmobile first used the Cutlass name on an experimental sports coupe designed in 1954. It rode a 110 in (2,800 mm) wheelbase, and featured a dramatic boat-tailed fastback roofline and stock V8. Its platform was similar to the compact F-85 Cutlass introduced seven years later.
General Motors began developing its first compact cars in 1956, beginning with initial planning on what would become the Chevrolet Corvair in 1960 on the GM Z platform. The following year a second series of somewhat longer cars was planned for Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac; what would be termed "senior compacts" on the "Y" platform.
Included in that Y-body was the The Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass. It was Oldsmobile's smallest, budget priced model-some two feet (60 cm) shorter and $451 less than the next-smallest Olds, the the full-sized Dynamic 88.
The first-year F-85 was offered in two body styles, a four-door sedan or a four-door station wagon with either two or three seats, and in a choice of two trim levels, base or De Luxe.

Bought a new ‘79 Cutlass Supreme coupe. Great looking car. Kept it 8 years and it had 96,000 miles on it. Still looked great. The only unscheduled repair was the water pump, otherwise it was bulletproof. Great car. Replaced it with an ‘88 Bonneville SSE, another great car which lasted a long time. GM built good cars, but lost their way in the mid ‘90’s. Sad what’s happened to GM. I have 2 Toyotas and a Lexus now.

My Aunt, I guess in her late 40s at the time went into an Oldmobile dealership in 1975 and ordered a Cutlass Supreme loaded to the max. Then she told the salesman that she wanted it painted in GMs Orange color with a White landau roof and white interior. This was an era when you ordered a car and the factory made them for you. The salesman said Lady you really dont want that Orange color and she replied YES I do. . Then she told the salesman I work for Pacific Bell and everyone in my office owns a conservative color car, dark blues , or black, when I come out of work I want to know exactly where my car is. What a great car.

You can go to a dealership now and if you really wanted an Orange car they will call surounding dealerships then the dealerships will trade inventory. I recently did that exact thing with my local dealership in NJ and my new Ford 150 came from a dealership located 140 miles away in Pennsylvania. 3 day wait. .

I own the exact 1973 Cutlass Salon pictured at 6:07. That is video from the estate sale listing that the previous owner got it from; I purchased it two years ago. It has the correct wheels and no more bug shield. The Salon was supposed to be a sort of "eurosport" package that GM cooked up, versus the more tradtional Cutlass Supreme. Ended up a pretty good car considering the state of 70s America.

Way cool - in 73 that was a $361 option on the Supreme 4dr only (slightly more than 10% of the base price, so not cheap). It was close to a Grand Am in concept, though the Salon had a standard 350 4bbl, while the Grand Am was a 400 2bbl base. My guess is that's a pretty rare vehicle today. Glad you've found the color matched hubcaps.

I owned 3 1977 Cutlasses, a 1985 Cutlass, a 1966 Delta 88, and my dad had a 1972 Custom Cruiser wagon. All of them went over 300K miles. Solid, well built cars.

Yes, I currently have a ‘71 Vista Cruiser that I’m restoring. The reasons are clear why the Cutlass was so popular. They were beautiful, reliable and comfortable…at least until 1978 when GM ruined the whole midsize line. IMHO.

When i drove past an Olds dealer one day early in 1982 and saw the charcoal grey Cutlass Supreme at the front of the lot, i fell in love with it. I had a new job and had never had a new car before. This was it! Charcoal grey, silver landau roof, silver velour upholstery. Loved it. It was sharp! Babied it with a good detailing about once a month. After many years, and it could only go in reverse, it was time to sell. Yes, the model was still so popular, and the body and interior still looking good, i sold it to a guy who test drove it backwards around the block. Yes, that was a good car! 😄

I bought that exact car in 1995 in Roswell, NM from my aunt. Had an 84 Regal before that, 4.1 V6 unfortunately. After the 1982 Cutlass blew a head gasket, I bought a used 1986 Cutlass. Guess the color, charcoal grey!! Those G body GMs were awesome. Perfect size, comfortable, and most importantly, rear wheel drive!

It was purchased new in January 75, by my parents, as a College 🎓 Graduation gift! What an unexpected surprise 😮! I believe the MSRP was around $6400. It was a very good looking car; powerful and a good highway curiser. Absolutely loved my first car! 👍💪

Had a '74 in high school, and my buddy had a '76. Amazing cars, with lots of options. We put in expensive stereos and they were always full of friends either cruising or partying. ONLY thinkg I hated about them was the scalloped panel in front of the rear wheel. It got destroyed by stones/debris and rusted quickly. I had to repaint that bit every spring (grew up in PA). I got it because my dad had a '72 442 in copper/black stripes. THAT was a fast car!

It was a great comfortable car, super-dependable and reliable, but not very fast. I sold it in 1986 back to its original owner who had seen it parked on a street near the campus and had put a note on the windshield.

7:58 -- The '76 Cutlass S was my first car. My neighbor bought it brand-new in late 1975 for his wife to drive, and I bought it from him in February of 1988 for $400. The A/C even still worked! Other than the usual minor parking lot dings, dents, and scratches, it was in great shape. The *perfect* first-car for a teenage kid in that era. Reliable, but cheap to fix if anything ever did break. I loved the way it looked with that "aero" front grille -- better looking than the squared-off Cutlass Supreme of the era, in my opinion.

Good vid. I myself had a 76 442 silver with blue stripes. One complaint, you forgot the 62-63 Turbocharged Jetfire. By far the most interesting of all Cutlasses (or F85's). Also you forgot the W30 & W31 packages. And the His/Hers shifters. A friend of my neighbor had one of those 72 Hurst Olds convertibles. That car was qorgeous . The gold interior just glowed in the sun when the top was down. He never put the Pace Car stickers on it. They were still in the trunk . 👊😎👍

The Cutlass Supreme was a panty dropper. I can't even begin to describe the feelings that went through my teenage boy body when my buddy and I walked into an Oldsmobile dealership and saw a white '82 Cutlass Supreme Brougham with red interior and t-top with stainless trim that integrated into a stainless hood. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was like watching Phoebe Cates disrobe. I about fainted. The Delorean had come out in all stainless so I guess this was Oldsmobile's riff on that. The luxury of that red velour interior and wood grain trim is just indescribable. Compared to everything else on the market at the time, it's no wonder the Cutlass was such a popular car. It checked all the boxes as did the Olds Delta 88 and 98 sedans. Oldsmobile was the top brand for affordable luxury, dethroning Chrysler which held the title in the 70's. Cadillac was considered a step above but something someone with more money than sense would buy. Lincoln was in between Olds and Cadillac, but if you were middle class and wanted the most comfort, luxury and style for the money you bought an Olds. People thought you were doing really well when you drove up in your new Cutlass Supreme or 98.
