1950s American Pedal Car Restoration - Perfect Restoration.
Hello again everybody. I am really happy to be with you in this project.
I am going to restore an American made, Murray brand pedal car. After researching, I have found out that these pedal cars were first made in 1949. And this model is called Commet or Torpedo. So it has two names. I think I am going to call it Commet. Actually Murrat Commet resembles of the name 1952 Buick Super Convertible. The three holes inside the left and right fenders can be found on both Commet and Buick Super. 50’s classical and aesthetic body lines can be seen on this unique car. I started with demoing the car. Paint on the main body was worn off and corrosion has started on some places. After degreasing and cleaning, with the use of paint stripper and sandblasting I got body clean. Thus I could see all the deformations on it. With the use of planishing hammer and anvil, I fixed those. To prepare for painting I used polyester putty, sandpaper, 2k undercoat, sandpaper again and finally painted it with 2k paint. To get a chrome effect, front grill, front and rear bumpers, right and left rocker panels has been painted with grey paint before. And I was able to actualize to nitrate coat those pieces as I thought they were intended to be made that way. That made me achieve an awesome and shiny mirror look. For this procedure, @emrahergn helped me. I want to thank him for the beautiful work he did. If you want to check his channel, you can click on his name. After cleaning, paint stripping and sandblasting the moving metal parts and the chassis of the vehicle, I reparied them. And I sandblasted them, then painted them with oven-drying paint. Body and the chassis pieces were painted with the same color code, ral 3002. But I sanded the surfaces of the wheels and painted them with a Retro beige paint and lastly put glossy varnish on them. I wanted to sand and re-buff the chrome plated pieces but they were too corroded-away, so I couldn’t do that so I undercoated and painted them. Next, like I did on the main body, I silver nitrate coated them and created a mirror shiny finish. There were small cracks on the tyres but they weren’t in bad condition. I degreased and cleaned them. Old seat covers were in unusable condition so I decided to make new ones. Fort his @sanlicraft helped me. We designed an awesome beige-leather seat covers fort he seats. Thanks to @sanlicraft for his help. He posts leather work on his channel, if you want to check him out you can click on the link. I thought I could make some parts for the car that were missing with laser cutting, like plates and dial. To produce these, @leonartatelier helped me. With the equipment he owns, O2 and fiber galvo laser, we produced the parts. Thanks to @leonartatelier for his craftsmanship. I want to say that I am hoping to see laser videos posted as soon as possible from him. I want to bring attention to four more pieces; I bought new bearings for the old bearings, which fitted perfectly. Possibly this was the most important part of this project. Instead of a new system, newly bought, fitting parts were a better choice. I made a piece for the plate, that I could fix before I fix the plate on, because the surface I was going to fix the plate on wasn’t flat. Looking at the pictures in the users manual, I made a instruction paper. And to be known as the person who made all of the work, I fixed a brass sheet in a hidden spot for it to be my signature with the help of camber headed brass bolts. It was a long, but a detailed video. I hope you like it. What is your favorite part in the video? Don’t forget to comment about this. And I need to remind that I read every single comment. Don’t forget to like, if you liked watching the video. I look forward to read your comments. See you in the next project. Take care.
Meine Mechaniker.

I never comment on videos of any kind, but I feel like I need to say two things. One, the level of skill shown here is incredible. Two, I really like that it's not a clipped 15-minute video showing only highlights; the hour long is a perfect length to see and appreciate the entire restoration. Excellent work.

I was born in '54...this beautiful restored car reminds me of my Dad's Buick Roadmaster! I never had one of these, but played with several kids in my neighborhood who had them...I understand that these in good original condition are very desirable to collectors! From start to finish...it is always a delight to watch a MASTER CRAFTSMAN apply his or her skills, as you certainly have done here! ❤👍

I agree, the longer video format and the lack of music allowing for the natural audio of a craftsman and his tools. This might be weird, but these videos are very ASMR-inducing for me. They are very relaxing to listen to.

A friend of mine bought an old metal pedal-car for his daughter. He brought it to an auto body shop and had the guy restore it. The guy used paint left over from another job he did. It came out so pretty he wouldn't let his daughter take it outside. Those old kiddie-cars held more charm than the plastic ones they make today, because they were made of real metal like Daddy's car. Wonderful job, as always.

Over the top on this one--from the silver nitrite 'chrome' finish to the dash details!!!! Wow, this is something else to watch! Not sure about restoration as that implies taking it back to what it was. This has to be better than it was new!! A joy to watch your talent. Excellent! Thanks for sharing your passion!

I like to imagine, 100 years in the future. Some guy who's not been born yet happens to come across this item. He looks at the quality craftmanship and buys it. It's very old, the paint is chipping, not much of a surprise after a hundred years. He checks around the item and sees "Meine Mechaniker." "Is that the manufacturer?" he says. He checks online and comes across your youtube channel. "Oh wow!" He sees your restoration. Amazing

Did anyone else stop and look up when Velcro was invented? It surprised me to see it used on the original seat of a 1950s toy. I thought it was a newer invention than that. It was invented in 1957, so it still would have been unusual to see it on a children’s toy back then. Maybe it was added later? Fantastic restoration, as always.

Thank you for the magical childhood memory of my grandfather's own restoration/reinvention of a very similar auto circa 1949-1950. Minus today's technology, all the work he did on our car was by hand. After sanding by hand and repainting by brush (silver "radiator" paint in place of chrome), he removed the twisted, broken, and partly missing pedal assembly and mounted the body onto our American Flyer sled. Come winter, we were the envy of every kid on the block as Grandpa, surely feeling as proud as the toddlers in his charge, towed them through the neighborhood for all to see. Totally enjoyed your video ..after finding it quite by accident on what otherwise would have been another lonely Thanksgiving night. Again, more than 70 years later, I can't thank you enough! (P.S. -- Hope you find the missing "horn" one day.) Ich wünsche dir viel Liebe, Glück und Frieden!

In the late sixties or early seventies (can't remember exactly) I wanted one of these really bad. I had asked my mom and dad for one several times but they just couldn't afford one. Luckily for me, we moved back to my parents original home place and next to a lot of our family. Guess what, my cousins had several of these to my amazement. I will never forget pulling into our new home's driveway and seeing these peddle cars sitting around in the neighbors yards and my dad telling me these neighbors were my kin folk. I made friends very quickly. Just saying. Thanks for the fond distant memory. It also made me think of my parents especially my dad whom we lost in the 90's. These peddle cars also created a lifelong addiction to real cars that continues for me even until this day.

Wow from Thailand! Totally forgot to drink my coffee this morning. Jaw dropping restoration with a ton of skills and eye to detail. Loved the silver nitrate 'trick', kind of magic. Two questions though. Why didn't you keep the steering wheel black? Would have been a nice contrast. I wondered why you spray painted the body, but powder coated the rest. Nice touch blurring your picture out while putting on the hub caps. Can't wait for your next video. This was awesome!
