1930s Marx Light Up Military Rusty Truck Restoration

I purchased this 1930s Marx Light Up Military Army Truck October of 2020. It was in really rough shape but also was very cool! It had all of the holes to be a light up truck other than the grille. I decided to make this one into a working light up truck and remanufactured the switch handle and headlight contacts. I also was not a big fan of the wooden wheels, so I swapped them out for rubber ones and kept the wooden ones for later if I ever decide to put it back to original wheels. I really love how the color came out on this one! Also this was my very first time using a sewing machine and it went pretty well honestly. Thanks again for watching!

    Welding and finishing of broken tabs is excellent. This impresses me every time! Sewing tips for next time: wash and pre-shrink your cotton duck, then iron. That's what happened to the original: it wasn't preshrunk, the truck got left out in the rain, and the cotton canvas cover shrunk. When you are sewing, the most important thing is the iron: keeping your fabric ironed gives you a better looking result. Love to see your beautiful vehicles, the wacky sheep, and Quality Control Kitty!

    These are such great toys, especially considering that it was the Great Depression era. My 97 year old mom, as she says, "never had anything called a toy". They didn't have shoes in the summer, running water, or electricity... ...Very much, a rich kid's wonderful toy.

    If you watch closely during disassembly there were crimps on the inboard of the original axels to keep the wheels in place... but not on the replacements. Which makes me wonder: why replace them? Chip does amazing work, and of course it’s up to him how he wants to do so, but he always seems to replace serviceable axels & other rods but never really explains why 🤔 If it’s strictly for cosmetic reasons, they could easily be plated & polished. Again, the projects always turn out outstanding, but i always scratch my head about the axels 🤨

    Thanks soo much for watching! I need to show it next time, I actually glue the wheels to the axle shafts and then let the axles spin in the body holes to roll, this keeps the wheels in place while keeping the sleeks design.

  • @Juju0LM

    @Juju0LM

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Gappasaurus I believe these crimps must have been reset, but not recorded. Because the axles has no barrier to prevent the wheels from roll to the middle of the axles.

    I have not watched very many of your videos yet but I love the way you completely restore things instead of just fixing them or modernizing them like a lot of people do with things. Many people alter or upgrade things instead of restoring them back to original, but then they call them restored when they are not. Update: After watching the rest of the video I realized that you also alter things, so I take back what I said about you doing perfect restorations! You do PARCIAL restorations with modifications! Also known as renovations.
