Stylish Camping Stove Restoration - G. Barthel 1930s Norma 51
In this video, I restore an old rusty camping stove made in Germany in the 1930s.
More about the restoration process:
It was very challenging but rewarding. I learned a lot about camping stoves!
The little stove was in disrepair when I got it. The fuel tank was damaged; it had a considerable bent that required a lot of skill and patience to repair because I couldn't open it, mainly because it was in the shape of a sphere.
If you want to learn more about this antique German stove, I encourage you to watch this video.
When I saw it, even though I was shocked at how bad it looked, full of dents, bends, rust, and burn!
The most challenging part was the pipe that had a wick stuck inside. I've tried many methods off-camera to avoid extra work and extensive interventions. Still, unfortunately, nothing worked, so the final decision/chance to get it working again was to make a section and then solder it back together.
After removing the rust, the parts were painted with heat-resistant paint, and I polished all the beautiful brass parts. At the end of the video, I made a test so you can see how it works!
More about the camping stove:
It was manufactured by the famous Norma 51 (Barthel) company in 1936.
I hope I have caught everything, but if you have any questions, you can comment, and I'll get back to you!
Cheers! Johnny.

I've never seen the hot glue stick method before, for fixing dents when you can't get to the other side!😺
Работа проделана отличная, этой походной печурки. Мне понравилась ваш маленькая наковальня, очень удобная. Спасибо за видос лайк однозначно и подписка. Удачи вам в вашем хобби и реставрации.

As usual asolutely gorgeous, Johnny! 👍 The "glue gun / stick method" worked so well 💪, I was very impressed with the results. If I had a sand blaster I'd never leave my garage and everything inside and outside of my house would be it's natural surface... sanded down perfectly smooth. 🥴

Just found your channel looking up one of these old stoves. Pretty cool but mine doesn't have the fuel tank. I was thinking about modifying a old brass toilet float for one. I have a copper expansion chamber off a ac unit but it's thick and heavy. Be easy to tap and thread but was worried about tipping over once it has fuel in it. Anyway enjoyed your content and will be watching more. 👍👍
Very nice

I don’t know whether you tried this or not… but an effective and tried-and-tested way is to heat the pipe till it is red hot. This will char the wick whereupon tapping the pipe on the table firmly, the wick will come out in the form of ash.
@rustyshadesrestoration
10 күн бұрын
That's a good tip. I didn't try because I could melt the pipe, and that would cause the end of the show. 😀
Nice very good job.

why soldering instead of brazing? i would think in a hot application like a burner, there would be the possibility of melting and then a spill? nicely done.
