1955 Tonka Green Giant Brand Green Bean Semi Truck and Trailer Restoration

I purchased this 1955 Tonka Green Giant Semi Truck and Trailer off eBay August of 2021. After taxes and shipping I ended up paying $125.78 for it!! It was a little more than I wanted to spend on it due to the condition it was in, however it truly was screaming out to be restored. This poor truck had obviously been painted over with a brush at one point in it's life and then left to rot. The wood semi trailer floor was in terrible shape and missing all of the nails which held it to the metal semi truck body. The rear doors and handles were missing for the cargo van body, otherwise all parts were their minus the trailer hitch, which someone had installed a screw and nut in the frame to act as the hitch. After sandblasting the body showed lots of pitting, I started by applying a first coat of high build primer and sanding it down to see how many pits I could fill this way, the semi tractor body was actually pretty close to flat at this point and only needed a second coat of primer to smooth out any additional pits, however the trailer body was not in great shape, there were many pits and some dents that I couldn't see until the primer was on, I decided to fill the dents and pits with high temp JB weld. I use this due to it being conductive and allowing me to powder coat over the top without issues. After two days of sanding the trailer body received a final coat of high build primer and was wet sanded for a final time before the final top coat of powder coat. While reassembling the trailer floor, I went to tap the metal end cap and ended up tossing it on the floor which then damaged the powder coating, I decided I better blast it clean and redo it, however during the blasting, I ended up with a hole through the part and had to completely remake the part off camera, you'll notice when I install the new part that the door pin holes are missing, I had to drill those later after it was installed to ensure they were aligned correctly. Overall this was an awesome restoration and I'm super happy with how it came out! Thanks for watching!

wow what an artist!! I sat here and remembered my sweet nephews playing with their tonka trucks, those things were expensive even in the 70's but like my brother said, they hold up, they did..now I believe the toys are plastic, not wanting to hurt the kids, the boys never hurt themselves playing with their toys....they grew up "playing" with their big tonka toys today. the truck turned out beautiful. truly beautiful.

I would like to suggest that when you are applying the decals, use soapy water. That way you can move the stickers to where you want them. Then use a squeegee to remove the air bubbles and set the decals. Also you should soak your wet/dry sandpaper in water for about 15-20 minutes before sanding. you did a tremendous job on this restoration. Keep up the great work.

I would have re-used the wood floor by way of epoxy. A minor clean-up and then hard epoxy to stop any further decay. "That's the original 1950s wood floor in the trailer." I restore motorcycles and never replace an original part. Some people are 'concourse' restorers for that type of buyer, and some people are 'original restoration' for that type of buyer. The 1950s wood was originally to the item and is irreplaceable. Even if you could find a NOS piece of plywood from the 1950s at the right thickness I still would not use it. It was not original to the item. Developing further techniques to salvage what 99% of restorers would not salvage has given me a bit of distinction.

I would love to have fun with her in a sand box with a bunch of trucks and tractors Build a slope and have the momentum of gravity do the rest. I want to get some slot cars and show her how to accelerate n decelerate when hitting corners.

As a retired trucker and model enthusiast you did a great job. However, that trailer has a heater unit not a refrigerator unit. If it was carrying produce you’d have to only transport it in the extreme cold…😂 I love the wood floors on the trailer. That is exactly what we used back in the day.

Thank you Primus54!! The decals were nerve racking for sure and they have several little bubbles that I couldn't get out, however I really love the color combo of this one! Beaker was probably horse, she was meowing up a storm after I brought the new truck inside, demanding payment for the final inspection process. Silly Kitty!

@@ChipChannelRestorations Truly great job, wow, for the decals I always spray some water on the body first, then you can easily slide and position the decals and squeeze out all the bubbles. Once in place I apply a little hot air ( few minutes), then after a couple of hours drying it's good to go. How many hours did you put in this resto?
