Skateboard Restoration - Wheels Made From Scratch!

In this video I restored an old skateboard. The skateboard was recovered from a house fire that was started from a lightning strike. I purchased it from an auction where all the proceeds were donated to the family whose house burned down.
I wanted to stick to the lightning theme in this restore. Once I got the skateboard taken apart I cut out a new deck from a piece of pine plywood. The deck was then covered in a topcoat resin.
The wheels were my next task. The original wheels were old clay wheels found on early skateboards in the 1960's. This was very difficult and took many tries to get it right. I crushed up clay pots and mixed them with a 2 part polyurethane. Once I got the mold and mixture right I was happy with the wheels. I used a newer style wheel to make the mold so that I could use updated skateboard bearings.
In the end my cat Remington got the honors of testing out the refreshed skateboard!
I hope you guys enjoyed the video, if you do leave a like and a comment. Subscribe if you would like to see more awesome content ;).

Me too, I would've sealed the original deck in clear resin, and then shaped the resin to what the deck's original silhouette would have been, simply to have retained an original component. IMHuO, this was a 'tribute project with donor pieces', rather than 'a restoration'. (Even though the result was awesome)

Fantastic reconditioning of the parts, and the etching process on the new deck was fantastic 👍👍👍 That being said, if *I* had been undertaking this project, rather than a whole new deck, I would've sealed the original deck within a block of clear resin, and then shaped the resin to what the original deck silhouette would likely have been, if for no other reason than the fire-damaged texture of the deck was interesting, and, it would've been preserving another original component 🙂 Aside from that one area of 'doing it differently', amazing project, and fantastic craftsmanship 👍👍👍

Hard wood makes a better deck than pine, but would not have made as Awesome of a " lighting Bolt " as you did with the pine. Overall....Well Done!!

If you want, could you make another video where you'd stabilize the old burned board in epoxy resin? That one would look really cool too. And since you are skilled enough, could you try replicating those retro trucks and put the replica trucks on the epoxy-burned board? It would look extremely cool in the end.

My uncle gave me his old set of skates. Steel adjustable frames, leather straps, and those same old hard wheels. Let me tell you, they were hard as hell and you felt ever grain of sand you rode over. Might be worth a few dollars to a collector though. Nice effect with the electricity. I've worked with high voltage, scary stuff when you're in the back of switchboard, but mostly 240/415. 1000V will jump one inch through air. I remember the experiments we did way back in tech school. I also had the pleasure of vacuuming flour out of switchboards. Fast moving flour through plastic conduit to the vacuum creates awesome amounts of static (DC) electricity and I was often hit with massive long sparks, if you're not properly grounded. It was never nice, but better than AC any day. 415V is not nice, but neither is 240. Oh, and flour dust is 50 times more explosive than coal dust. As for loose ball bearings... I can't tell you how many times I stripped my old wooden skateboard and push-bike down to clean those bloody things, then you have to get the tension just right on the nuts, so that they're not too loose or too tight. If I'd only known about sealed bearings back then... lol. Nice work. I hope someone paid you handsomely to pass on to that unfortunate family.

Sounds like you had some interesting times with the switchboards! I love to hear everyone’s old stories! I wish more schools had shop class and I also feel more people should attend tech schools. None the less loved the story!

@@DrRestoration Life's been a wild ride for me, Doc, all sorts of jobs and experiences, I even worked in operating theatres with doctors (At times I thought, I'd have sacked that orthopaedic surgeon if he was my apprentice, lol). And true, shop classes were my favourites and more people should be going into trades, that are instead wasting away time in universities, often with no jobs for them in the end. I almost went to Uni after working my way via night courses from electrician to electronic technician... almost. I hope whatever you do goes well for you. Kind regards.

This is in fact awesome but at a certain point when you completely replace the main parts that are most noticeable about the skateboard (deck and wheels) I don't think this can be called a restoration anymore, yes it's awesome but I don't think that to this extent it can still be called a restoration, and yes I understand that the parts I pointed out were beyond saving but at this point call it salvaging what you can and making a new deck

Loved it, you are very talented, especially liked the board itself.

I hope you was able to pay well for it to help the family. So glad for the family you were able to buy it Such a great thing for you to do and from the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you for the family!!! Do you let them know what you were going to do to it so they could watch?? It looks great and I love the lightning bolt!! Enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up

Hey oneshot, I paid $100 for it. I feel it was for a great cause! Unfortunately I purchased it locally at a local swap meet a few months back and I do not have the previous owners contact info 😞

Ok as a skateboarder this is painful to watch like why make the wheels and the board is super thick this is just pure pain💀🥲
