1930 Ford Model A - Part XIV - The Resurrection

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

As the post fire work continues, I removed the starter and contact point, cleaned the connections as well the internals. A bench test of the start yield favorable results. After the starter was reinstalled and connections made, it worked! I then made several attempts at starting the engine and then started to focus on the timing. I checked and rechecked and found that a lot of adjustment was needed. Eventually, persistence paid off. Of note, the only replacement parts in this are the four new spark plugs! This is running off the original Ford coil, points, and condenser! Thank you all for your time and comments. Our first goal is now complete.

glad to see you got it running; I just Lifted your ban, from using the choke...🤣 normally; a model a, should need only 1 quick pull, then let it go.

Thank you. Much apprecaited. Prior to his passing, he told me the last time he messed with the car was when he came home from the Army in the early 1950's.

Great job! It just needs some tinkering with now. Could be the GAV adjustment and or timing. It will eventually run and drive.

Thank you. I wish the wheels were in better shape. I need to find some wheels that will bolt on and make it easier to move around, especially now. Thank you so much for your help and advice.

OH DEAR !!! I did not catch you in time you have probably given the engine the kiss of death by starting it without cleaning the oil pan valve chest and oil pump pick up gauze .

That is next up on the list. We did a very limited run for this reason, and had previously did an extensive flushing out of the internals. While running, we were able to verify oil circulating through the system though. Thank you.

I think I see how you set the timing and got it running. You just kept advancing the timing by moving the rotor a bit at a time until it started. That, I'd say, is the crude way. Don't you have a crank to turn the engine over and a timing pin to insert in the hole? Or if you couldn't find the crank, I'd turn the engine over with the starter with the first spark plug removed and insert a finger to see if the number one piston is at the top. Of course it could be 180 degrees out but then you just keep turning her over until number one piston comes up again. Okay so that's a little crude too. Of course you'd have to remove your jumper cable from the number one spark plug first. Why did you ground it to a spark plug?

Hey Dug: Watch this video and you'll see when he removes the remnants of the ignition cable. Inside the housing, you will see the lower plate with the wire that leads to the points. The points are insulated from the advance/retard lever so I don't understand how your wiring attached to that arm ever powered your ignition!! ;o) kzread.info/dash/bejne/aHqVupaOmt29h9Y.html Watch part 2 also as it deals exactly with the source cable into the distributor. This should lead you to a good result!! ;o)

The wire on the timing advance arm was only a secondary ground. The power was going to the wire that comes out of the distributor ( the screw in plug that would terminate at the ignition switch). Thank you for the video links. Much apprecaited.

@@duginvirginia5737 Thanks for the reply. I couldn't understand how it could have run with the ignition going to that advance arm???
