1930 Ford Model A
Will it run?
Can we save it?
Lets take a last minute look before winter sets in and ponder this over the next few months and see if we can make it run with minimal investment.
A good friend of ours granted permission to tinker with his first car and see if we can make it run for him again.
Our friend is 92 years old and he purchased this in 1947, for the tidy sum of $200.00 ! It started life as a 1930 Ford Model A Coupe, however, the man whom he purchased it from made it into a little pickup truck! Back in 1947, he said the motor had a cracked head, leaky radiator, and other mechanical issues. He installed a new head, rebuild the motor, installed new pistions / rings that were thirty-thousands oversized and then made it his daily driver until he was drafted into the Army to serve during the Korean War. Notice, the last year of registration was 1951, when he left for the Army.
In this new video, we will see if we can recover, save, and get this running again. As you can see, being exposed to the elements and time has taken a dramatic toll on this car. But, after being inspired by many of the "will it run" videos, lets see if we can get it running.
In this first video, we do a rough preliminary check and as winter sets in, we shall see what is needed to recover the car and atleast get it running. A follow-up to this may not occur until spring of 2022.
Thanks for watching.

Many model A's were converted into trucks back in the day, not only just for hauling, but also because during the war, passenger cars were only allowed to buy a small amount of gasoline at one time where as trucks could get a few gallons more when fueling up. Cool find!

Thank you. This is going to be a long term, as time permits project. In short order, I want to see if we can get the motor loose; currently awaiting a hand crank to arrive. Then, just keep adding oil / penetrating fluid to everything and see how it goes. Then, inspect the distributor, cobble together a new coil, plugs, and wire and see if it will fire. If we can get it that far, then, possibly see about moving it to a better working location. One good thing, the tires are pretty good; only flat on one side all the way around. :-)

Gauge at 12 o'clock is your gas gauge - a floating cork in the tank moves the indicator (or used to.). 1930-31 Model A cars came with 19" wheels, but in the depression and around WWII those tires were hard to find and many people used 1932-1935 Ford wire wheels, which fit just fine. Looks like those are now on your coupe. Size should be readable on the tire sidewalls.

You can use several different replacement spark plugs. Original Champions were 3X models, then C4, then C-16, the W-16Y. Any will work great. Or you can use modern plugs like Autolite 3076 work great and are less expensive. Hopefully you can unscrew the old ones and toss them out.

Great info ! Thank you. Luckily, all the plugs came out with little effort, however, I am still trying to get the motor to break free.

@@duginvirginia5737 Happened to one of my buddies a few years ago. Couldn't turn over the engine. We pulled the head and found the rings had rusted to the cylinder walls. Lots of penetrating oil and Kroil finally busted it loose. While you have the head off, you can also check the valves - they probably are stuck too (we found 2 that were.)

Before you try to start it drop the oil pan and pop out the dipper tray clean out the sludge and clean the oil pump screen . Clean out the valve chest and make sure the 3 main bearing feeds are clear . If you dont do this you will destroy the engine fore sure . TRUST ME !!!
