The 3DS was Nintendo's last true portable device and is still my favorite. One the best 3DS mods out there is the Project Restoration mod for Majora's Mask 3D which undoes all the unnecessary changes made to the game with additional QOL changes. Also there's a mod that adds C-stick support to Ocarina of Time 3D which never got Circle Pad Pro support. Now you can freely move the camera around like in Majora's Mask 3D.

Yeah, it didn't seem right to have the voices be uncompressed. Don't get me wrong, it's cool, but it kinda breaks the idea they're speaking over a comms system. I'm sure someone could apply an audio filter and use that instead.
Took my 2DS XL with me when I travelled this weekend. I played on it whenever I had the chance. Waiting for my food, waiting for the train, sitting down to take in the scenery, and when I was done I'd put it into sleep mode and let the play coins rack up! I’m a big fan of moving saves between real hardware and emulators, so something basic like Checkpoint which comes with the homebrew is amazing!!
@latt.qcd9221
2 ай бұрын
This was always one of the biggest selling points of homebrew, for me. It's especially nice for games where you only have two or three save files, but you make some game-changing choices at certain points in the game that are nice to be able to backup while playing on original hardware.
@Mik3l24

Checkpoint can also be used to have effectively multiple save slots in Pokemon games!
@lordeilluminati

I think JKSV is far better than Checkpoint. JKSV is more simple and intuitive, I hate how everything on checkpoint is done by button combos that are not explained well. I was infuriated how some games didnt appear because the game list is refreshed by a button combination, on JKSV you just click "Reload game list" as it should. For Pokemon games there is also PKSV which acts like a local Pokemon Bank
@lordeilluminati

I rather JKSV than Checkpoint. I hate how Checkpoint has an awful UI that relies too much on button combos for important features that the user needs to remember. JKSV is far easier and straightforward to use, just refresh your game list, choose it to create a new backup or to restore a save from that game and done. For Pokemon games there is PKSV also.

We need to think in terms of development costs vs financial gain ratios. The devs who ported those games to the 3DS did so on their free time, but if Nintendo were to do it themselves they'd have to spend money on devs who'd need to be paid for this, as small as this kind of project may seem. I don't think many people would be interested in those games like they'd be in NES/SNES/Game Boy stuff. But it is pretty sad to see that those games will essentially become unknown to the majority of people due to the fact they're tied to a system that failed.
@savagej4y241

Yeah, but probably the only one that would've been worth working on was VB Wario Land. That would've taken way more effort than just porting the existing Wario Land titles, and didn't think there were enough of us from the 90's who really wanted to play the game but just couldn't stand the Virtual Boy form factor. That thing made me feel like I needed a neck brace after 15 minutes trying it at a demo kiosk in '95 lol

You're honestly better off just buying 3rd party faceplates for the normal sized New 3DS, depending on what plate it is anyway A lot of them are also inflated now, but I'd rather pay roughly $35-40 for a 3rd party clone of the Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire faceplates then spend $120+ for the actual OEM ones. The 3rd party clone does the job perfectly fine.

I modded my old 3ds about two weeks ago. So this video came at the right time for mee, too xD Sooner or later i gonna mod my new 3ds, but at the start i was a bit afraid to do it right away because there are tons of paid Software on it 😅
As someone who can speak Japanese (now), my 3DS lately has been one the best emulation machines out there. I'm still thinking of buying a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro but honestly, playing games like Mizzurna Falls, Yuuyami Doori Tankentai (one of my goals) and as of this week, Boku no Natsuyasumi, my N3DS running these games as a CIA has been such a great experience. Even more recently with the new Virtual Boy emulator that os now running natively on the 3DS is insanely good! I recently conpleted Wario Land on it and its by far the best game on VB and one of the best Wario Land games. Using the actual 3DS 3D slider and being able to change the colours from Red to anything else is such a huge inprovement. PS1 on the 3DS and now playing these region/language locked games has made the 3DS one of the best and cheapest handheld emulators out there. Funny side story, while I was in Japan Nov 2023, I ended up street passing with a Nintendo employee, but it said my most recent game was PS1 Virtual Console lol. So now there's a Nintendo employee with someone who had a PS1 emulator on their 3DS now appear in their Mii Plaza.

PKSM is much better than the official Pokémon Bank, being able to transfer mons from one generation to the other should never be a paid service indeed, soon or later it will become impossible to officially transfer Pokémon from the 3DS and bellow to the newer games.
I've got a couple CFW N3DSXLs that I use for recording, but I'd like to thank you for showing all these great uses! That said, a key one I think you missed would be Checkpoint. The ability to back up saves of physical and digital NDS and 3DS titles directly to your SD card is extremely valuable. Not only is your save protected from any sort of hardware issue, you can transfer that save to another cartridge, console or even to an emulator on PC.
Absolutely loving these cfw videos. Thanks Jon.
One of these days Jon's just gonna come out with a video titled "how to break out of jail" and I'll nod along, immersed in the explanation and not questioning anything
I'm gonna guess and say that the frame drops in a Link Between worlds is due to the game loading things in view on the fly while IN the game world, as opposed to the fast travels fade to black allowing the system to free up bandwith by not needing to render anything, thus not stressing the 3DS as much So the slowdown probably isn't an artistic choice so much as it is a "good enough" sorta situation
NTR is a very unfortunate acronym to keep repeating throughout the video lmao
@CiromBreeze
2 ай бұрын
It's short for the codename of the NDS, Nitro. Blame Nintendo, but on all NDS hardware, you can see the codename NTR written on the back. Similarly, all 3DS has CTR written on the back, as the 3DS codename is Citra (and yes, that's where the emulator got its name from)

My personal favorite is the music mod for Majora's Mask 3D by JoeFilms. It's an incredible mod that updates all of the music in the game with fanmade orchestral versions and if you install it with a digital version of the game, it can simultaneously work with a physical cartridge.

This was fun. I had no idea about pretty much all of these features
These are some great tips I didn't know about! I've really only ever used the Rosalina menu to force old 3DS games to use the full New 3DS CPU which makes games like Pokemon show the battles without any frame drops.
Im so glad Jon is no longer at Nintendo Life, so we could get videos like these. There's no way in hell they would ever let him make videos of this topic over there.
Checkpoint and the ability to create multiple save files. I kid you not that was the entire reason I cfwed my 3DS and it's brilliant to have multiple saves in a game like Pokémon.
Great video, Jon!
I love these videos, keep them coming. This channel just keeps getting better every week. 🤘🎸😎
I remember that the first and second reasons for modding my 3DS were: custom themes & playing games that I otherwise wouldn't be able to play I'm quite glad that I got a bigger SD card for my 3DS, because that really expanded how many games I could download & play I know that I can't use some of this information because I have an old 3DS XL, but I still quite enjoyed learning from this video
I homebrewed my 3DS a couple of weeks ago for my birthday because I noticed the console was starting to have some trouble reading the cartridges when I switched them. So I homebrewed it to dump all my games inside (and my sibling’s because I played them too and I want to keep playing them when I have the time) and preserve my games and my save files. I ended up having fun finding custom themes and I’m learning about what else I can do aside from playing roms and games I didn’t have the opportunity to play before.
I would absolutely love to keep having the ability to wonder share pokemon on 3ds. Its what makes playthroughs so fun when thats all you can do
There are some interesting things I haven't heard of yet. Thanks, Jon! Especially the button remapper as my 3DSXL's A button has no proper contact with the PCB anymore, making it really difficult to play games like Mario Kart. Also that Universal Updater is something I only know from the Switch homebrew scene. Interesting to see it in action on 3DS. Makes collecting homebrew much more relaxing.
Thank you mate. Such a great video.
Thanks Jon ! After watching your 3DS videos, I cracked my old 3DS ! And I was looking for things to do with it beside playing GBA games !

@@EuroMIX2 It was always wild to me that 3DS released without it. It single handedly saves 3D on 3ds. Like on one hand I get it, the success of the 3DS let us have the New 3DS, but I always had the feeling that we never got to experience 3D focused games on the 3DS because of that ironically. Most games use the 3D aesthetically rather than making it core to gameplay, and the awful flickering and one angle nature of the original 3ds 3D is likely responsible for that. Tbh I wish we got a New 3DS with NO SLIDER always on 3D on release so developers would've be forced to actually engage with it to do cool things. And if a game didn't have 3D, it could've just boot into 2D instead.

My N3DS is modded but I never went beyond installing roms. Thanks for this video, Jon. Already tested a lot of the stuff you shared. Star Fox 64 with the original voice cast is a must!
Who knew Benedict Cumberbatch knew so much about the 3DS?
Such a great video to make
HOLY FREAK... THIS VIDEO CHANGED MY LIFE. yep. im calling theese essential!
Thank you, mate. I never knew that I could unlock the New 3DS's clock speed, and I certainly didn't know about save states being a thing on an actual 3DS.
Can u plz do a video tutorial on how to add better Stereoscopic 3D Patches/Cheat Codes on the 3DS? thanks.

I second this! 🙏
This man has a voice made for radio and a face made for broadway, what the hell... Stop being so cool.
This feels like the 3DS' unofficial swan song. Not under the form of a game, but of all the absolutely incredible things you can do with it once modded. I love mine so much for this, even more than the PS Vita (which also has an insane modding scene). I'd love to thank the entire 3DS community for all the fantastic mods.
This is a great video thank you Jon

You made me a subscriber today!
Awesome video :)
Great video, these are all pretty rad! Especially the Virtual Boy one. Also yes I AGREE the wooden faceplate is super sexy, it is my only regret for not pick up the normal New 3DS instead of the XL one
The 3DS is essentially a comfort food handheld for me. So many great games to play, plenty of features to enjoy, and adding Homebrew just makes the experience even better! Mods, native GBA, even better DS enhancements and way to play them from the SD card, oh my this is great stuff! All I know is that the 3DS Homebrew scene is here to stay!
The input redirection has changed everything for me. I also have a 3DS with a capture card, and this goes perfectly with that. Had a homebrew'd 3DS since it was possible and didn't even know this was a thing. Based Jon
I just purchased a modded three dimension screen and the wooden case looks amazing.
This video made me remember that I had Rhythm Thief on my 3ds and never finished, and maan its awesome
Great video - thanks.
The one thing the 3DS mod scene is seriously missing atm is a consolization mod. USB capture mods are good for streaming, but the output is too laggy for gaming on your TV directly. We need dual HDMI outputs 😢
This video is gold
DISCLAIMER: the mayority of this homebrew apps only works in NEW 3DS models
Those ports of _Tomb Raider_ and _Super Mario 64_ look really nice in (stereoscopic) 3D.
the voices is making me feel safe
This video Helped so so so much thank you bro ! Edit : subbed !
Wow. Funny how you mention DQ8 after I just got the game on 3DS a few days ago.
I love the input redirection. I use it for Monster Hunter, Mario Kart, Smash, and, recently, Pokemon. I love controlling Multiple consoles at once for Shiny Hunting. has been a LIFESAVER, for sure!! Also, framerate counter?! I NEED THIS!!
Never really got to watch any movies in 3D so I'm going to keep note on the 3D Movie Viewer. Been using my 3DS more often as of late due to Pretendo Network (alongside with my Wii U) so I'm glad to see all the homebrew for both. Also, apparently they actually _did_ release a few movies for 3DS in Japan, with Wreck-it Ralph being one such example.
I’ve always loved 3ds homebrew but I fell out of what the community was doing years ago. This video has got me interested again :D
Shout-out to EX Troopers. It's a spinoff of the Lost Planet franchise, and it uses a lot of assets from the cancelled MegaMan Legends 3 prototype. It never released outside of Japan, but a fan-translation was finished in 2022. Definitely give it a try!
Nice! Glad to see how versatile the 3DS has become. It truly is a marvel of homebrewgineering lol
