15,000 Mile Review - Yamaha XT225 Dual Sport Motorcycle

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This 15,000 mile review of my 2006 Yamaha XT225 dual sport is the third annual review video I've made of the motorcycle. In this episode we'll take a look at the bike's regular maintenance, how it's held up, and what's been needed in the way of repairs after all of those miles. At the end of the video I'll give my current summation and thoughts on the bike.
If you’ve enjoyed this video I hope you’ll give it a “like” and will consider hitting that subscribe button! Have a comment or thought? Please leave it below…comments are always encouraged and appreciated. For more content you can also follow me on Instagram at / jimmytmoto and at my website, jimmytmoto.com .
This channel is for motorcycle riders, mechanics, and enthusiasts who enjoy the simple joys of motorcycling, from dual sport riding to fixing up old bikes on a budget. My videos also consider the perspective of short motorcycle riders (when it’s helpful and relevant) in choosing and modifying bikes and equipment.
I’ve been hooked on motorcycles since 1975 when, at the age of 11, my dad brought home a shiny new Suzuki TM75 for me and a Suzuki TC185 for himself so that we could trail ride together in the hills of West Virginia. Since then I’ve worked as a mechanic, owned countless bikes, and even worked in the motorcycle industry for a number of years as a photographer and journalist. Now I do mainly video production and enjoy nothing more than making and sharing these motorcycle videos on KZread.
Thanks again for watching. Ride safe!

Riding with others sometimes causes "compare despair" and it makes us feel like we need to be keeping up with the next guy. (money wise) If you're happy with your bike, don't worry about what other people ride. Stay true to yourself and let the other guy stay in debt. ; ) Great video by the way!

Grrrreat advice! I ride a versys 300 and an xt225(and Im an avid scooter fan-200-300cc). Been riding xt's since the 80s and I prefer small displacement due to the ability to ride anywhere at any time and getting great gas mileage. I like to ride places my buddies who all have massive bikes now can only dream of. I have watched the joy of riding become a contest of $$$ and trying to keep up each time someone gets a bigger "better" hog, etc. It is mind boggling to me. They are all so worried about how they look and all that show for everyone else....

I bought a “New” 2007 XT225 in 2008. It was my only transportation at the time. I’d just come back from working 5 months in the Philippines. I bought it in Michigan, rode it to Miami, Fl to my next job assignment. All over Florida while working there, then quit the job. Left Florida for AZ to pickup my Motorhome I’d left 13 months earlier to go to the Philippines. Since I had a older cousin living in Monterey, Mexico, I went there. I ended up putting 3300 miles touring Mexico. I was DEEP in Mexico most of the time. Little towns high up in the mountains etc. I ended up coming out of Mexico at Nogales, AZ. That was the trip of a lifetime. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL! Long story short, in the first 10 months, I had 16000 miles on it. I had 33,000 miles when I sold it. I believe these bikes could easily go 100,000 miles. I’ve owned lots of Motorcycles. That XT was the best bike I’ve ever owned. I watched this video, because I would really like to get another one. It would be a XT225, not the XT250 for me. Listening to this guy tell of all the work he’s done on his, kind of blows my mind. I didn’t do anything but changed chain and sprockets, brake pads, tires, oil changes, etc.

I guess I did rejet the carb. And take out the baffle. And remove the epa set screw so you can adjust the fuel mixture. It is stock. But runs better than stock tuned was.

XT225 is really one of the best light weight dual-sport bike, owned one for few years, really enjoyed it to the Max, did some tours in North Borneo, never once have any problem, some time it even outperformed some bigger adventure bikes specially at some real bad logging dirt road...

I recommend the DR650 as a companion bike. I now have both an XT225 and lowered DR; the 650 is just more comfortable on longer rides. I'm going to run more aggressive tires on the XT for rides where a light, nimble bike makes more sense.

You are enjoying the bike as it's intended. I have a 2019 XT250 that for the first couple hundred miles was ridden the same way though off road areas were really hard to find. Then I got in with a group of guys that are hard on dirt riding, no street miles. The XT250 can do it, but it's more exhausting for the rider, not to mention it's hard on the machine. A 20 or 30 mile hard ride is pretty normal for the day once or twice a week. I'm glad for you that you seem to have a myriad of riding areas to explore.

Hey Jimmy, I enjoyed your video. I bought a new tw200 in august. I wanted a used one but there are none around at a realistic price. I also considered the xt250 but decided against it since i already have a crf250L. My road bike is a Moto Gucci V85TT. Your type of riding is what i like to do the most. I’m 66 now and own 3 motorcycles and 2 quads. I really like the tw200. I dont really do single track anymore. More interested in riding dirt roads and seeing scenery that is different from all the road riding I’ve been doing since i was 16. Almost all my riding is done solo. Cant seem to find some with similar interest, age adjusted. Don’t really look all that hard either. I do alot of maintenance myself. I’m not a mechanic but more of a half ass mechanic. Anyway, nice to see someone who thinks and plays like i do. Keep up the videos.

Excellent review! Great information on what to look for. Incidentally, I watched your other video concerning the sixth gear issue before watching this one. I'm in the process of purchasing a 2004 XT225 with 5,000 but neither of the videos are going to dissuade me from making the purchase which should happen in the next week or two. I am mechanically inclined so I can fix anything that may go wrong. I'm wanting this bike mainly for low-speed technical riding in the mountains where I live, but also for the purpose of having my girlfriend be able to ride with me. At 5'4" my WR250R is a bit too tall for her.

Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. Interestingly when going over mine I found the ignition switch screws were loose and the speedo cable was loose. After watching your tire video about 10 times I went with a 244 up front and a 270 in the rear, stock sizes, this video validates that decision. How are the sr250 and ninja, both are interesting bikes? Keep up the good work I enjoy all your videos!

One of my favorite books, it might be time for a re-read! It looks like we both ended up with the 244 front and 270 rear combo, which seems to be working out great. As for the other bikes, the Ninja has been sold (finally) and the SR250 is on the selling block, for a couple reasons. I love the bike but this year has been really tough financially in my industry (video production) so I'm consolidating as much as possible. I'll consider fixing up a vintage dual sport as the next project bike, if I can find one, but until then the XT225 will be carrying the burden. Thanks again for following along, I appreciate it!

I make it mandatory to use high octane fuel, ethanol free high octane and at times mixing racing fuel (no more than once a month) to keep the engine performance at its peak. As I suspect you do as well, since you’re always looking to keep your motorcycle safe in proper working conditions. I followed this tip when I worked for Honda Motorcycle company in the past and still suggest it today. Thanks so much for the review. Look forward to your next review. Till next time “Road Warrior”.

I look at consistency, quality and utility, performance should match utility with anything you buy. This bike is good for off road trail adventures and some road adventures. I am looking at the 250. It's lean, nimble and light weight. I am not looking for jumps or wheelies or showboat stuff. I am looking for secondary roads, off trail adventures and getting there without feeling like I fought an elephant on two wheels doing it. I don't care what others think, if a person can load out and go across several states and see some cool stuff then who cares what you ride, question is, did you get there or not?

Living in Massachusetts I did to the MABDR with a group of friends. They did have to take it a bit easy on me on the highway. I was pushing it hard to keep up at 65-70ish. I actually decided to change the oil after the long commute down and then on the partial commute back, due to pushing it on the highway. The oil did look spent. I figure if I keep on frequent oil changes, it will help limit the damage of the constant revving.

Just got home from work and this popped up. Great video man! Enjoyed it a lot. Good information. I had a 1980 XT 250, the first year Yamaha produced a four stroke 250. Put a few thousand miles on it. Love it, great machine. Never left me walking. Just bought a Honda XR650L for longer dual sport trips and like you I just took my last ride of the season this weekend. Long live the XT’s! Anyway, good job and looking forward to more of your videos. Quick question: What set up do you use for your microphone? I just have an older GoPro Hero plus so I didn’t know of you have a microphone plugged in. Sounds good and no wind noise.

Thanks, XTman! I really love that first generation of the XT250 and would love to find one in decent shape. As for the microphone, in this video I used a separate voice recorder (Zoom H1) with an inexpensive lavalier mic from Amazon in the front of my helmet. Then the separate audio track was matched up to the GoPro in editing. It requires more gear and extra steps but it really is worth it, as far as getting the best sound quality. I've tried a number of mic adapters and other setups that plug straight into the GoPro camera but nothing else sounds as good as the separate recorder. At first it's kind of a pain to deal with but after a while it just becomes habit.

Your video was an enjoyable ride. I have owned my 2003 xt225 since 2004. It has 27800 miles and I have put all but 345 miles on it. From all the problems you have had, I suspect you got a lemon. I have had few issues and have never adjusted the valves. Although I ride it on and off road it has rarely had issues. I admit that it is very cold blooded and takes about 3 miles or more to warm up. I found that if the gas is not turned off after a ride, it is difficult to start. With the gas off after riding, it starts right away.

Hey Jimmy, wonderful review and ride as always :) I bet the carb issue you had was water both times. I can't help but feel the fuel strainer in the tank would stop any significant floating bits, and anything heavy will mostly just settle harmlessly in the bottom of the tank and the bottom of the carb bowl, without taking up enough space to bother anything. That leaves water as the prime suspect, because it can actually take up enough space in the bowl to impede fuel flow through the main jet. It's worth questioning whether the gas station you use might have old tanks. I've had problems with water in gas from a couple of my local gas stations, places with old tanks, so I'm pretty careful now about where I get fuel. About that 6-ply Shinko 244, I'm sure you could air that down quite a bit without trouble, because of that stiff tire, and it would be really good off road, I'll guess maybe 10psi minimum, 15psi being high, with 20psi the very absolute max you would want to run it. The Motoz Mountain Hybrid front is also a stiff and heavy carcass tire, intended for use with TuBliss, and I run it down to 7.5 for hard offroad (can even go lower), but that is better supported the way TuBliss works. I also get the feeling that at high speeds the centrifugal force overcomes the low pressure to an extent, so I never feel the need to air up for street riding, other than it does help with power a bit, and I guess mileage too, I suppose relevant on longer rides. My final thought regarding the long term: I can't see moving on with anything on the market now. No matter how possible it would be for our perfect Unicorn bike to exist, the XT225 is still the closest thing to it as far as I can tell. This leaves me willing to spend the bigger bucks if I decide upgrading is needed. The list is pretty short: suspension and power. Front forks can be done cheaply with emulator valves and new springs. The rear shock is harder, but I think something amazing can be found for well under $500 if I can decode the matrix of how to buy aftermarket from Japan or China. For power, we have airbox, exhaust and carb. I'm a big fan of quiet, so I'm tempted to find an XT350 muffler to bolt on. Alternative carbs are a whole other matrix to decode, but there are many and very real possible options, including direct pull slide instead of vacuum CV, which apparently gives much snappier power. Here's a must-see video about racing a DR200 kzread.info/dash/bejne/pmWu0dmej8LToco.html

Stumbled up on this video while researching the xt225. I've been looking for an entry level dual sport bike for my son and came across an 07 xt225 with very low miles (389). All the reviews I've seen have been almost all positive and appears would be a great beginner bike for my son. This bike I'm looking at appears to have been very well taken care of but my question is should I be concerned that it has such few miles on it to be almost 15 years old? I'm aware that may sound like an unusual question but I've read and heard that it may not be a great thing for vehicles to not be used very often. Anyway, you're video was great and the audio sounded fantastic even before you pulled your visor down and it looks like you have some great riding in your area. Thanks again for the video and I would appreciate advice.

Great video! You put on a lot more miles than I do. A common issue with the XT225 is broken rear spokes. Sometimes the spoke issue leads to rear hub issues. Have you experienced any of this during the time you have owned your XT225? I have collected a TTR225 rear hub and a XT225 rear hoop. Soon I plan to lace that hub to the hoop and convert the hub to work on my XT225. The TTR225 hub is supposed to be bomb proof and reduces the loose spoke issue. The conversion of the TTR225 hub to fit the XT225 is fairly simple with minimal modification needed.

Thanks, Thumper Bandit! I'm aware of the rear wheel being a weak point and I've been looking for a TTR225 rear wheel, myself. I luckily haven't experienced any problems with the stock rear wheel but very deliberately don't hammer it through the rocks or over jumps, and I do keep an eye on the rear spokes. Let me know how it goes with your TTR rear wheel conversion!

Couple of observations.. First, I have no idea if your 225 is a counterbalanced engine but either way I want folks to notice how still your reflection was in the mirrors. My 2019 XT250 is smooth as well and that definitely has a counterbalanced engine. I had many street bikes that weren't as still as yours.. Second, you put on a tremendous amount of miles on in a year.... Good for you. Third, In reference to your cracked rim, I'm planning on replacing my front as well and I'm giving serious thought on the 90/90/21 or the 90/100/21 for exactly that reason and wondered if you did any research on those. For me, it's just a matter on the make tire sidewall ply etc.. I probably subject my bike to a lot more tough terrain than most folks and I want to minimize the chance of a flat as well as a bit more shock absorbing ability of the tire. Lastly, did I miss your video on your impressions on the low cost suspension mods you did ? ( Fork oil, cut springs, plastic spacer etc ? )

You could replace that tool box with a tool tube, they are long enough to hold the smaller tire levers. I placed mine so it is exactly opposite the exhaust on the other side. Btw my DRZ is at 25k miles and absolutely nothing has gone wrong.

hey jimmy, riding your XT, 70mph on highway roads are you full throttle in 6th, my 06xt225 doesn't reach cruising speeds like that. especially with a 14t front sprocket you must be revving the crap out of the little guy. wondering if you have done any other performance mods or the previous owner?

A question, I had a 2008 250xt. I understood that you were not supposed to use synthetic motor oil. I understand there is a shared oil with the transmission and engine. I believe I read in a user group someone had used synthetic oil and the result was slippage with the clutch. Can you speak to you using the mobile one with not issues. I am looking at buying a 1992 XT225 and would use synthetic if an option. I think the XT 225 has it over the XT 250. XT225 has six speeds, greaseable swing arm, lighter weight by 50 lbs. Any suggestions the 1992 XT too old and advantages over the newer models? thanks

I have several Slipstreamer Spit Fire windshields that I kept when I sold a bike. In my experience, they cause additional wind buffeting turbulence and noise to my helmet. I've thought about putting one on my XT225 and TW200 but anticipate the same disappointing results. All the new "adventure" bikes have pseudo/irregular rectangular shaped wind deflectors and I'm tempted to cut one of the Spit Fires to mimic an X-rectangle. Any thoughts? Anyone?

I have a guy offering a 2003 xt225 with 6k miles on it for $2300? I also found a TT 200 for $2200 with 16k ok it. Thoughts on what bike you think might need better. For more street I would guess the XT? And I’m guessing the TT 200 is better off road?

Hmmm...it really depends on your budget., mrrickychuck. If you're looking for something comparably small and going fast isn't a major concern then the Suzuki DR200 is often compared to the XT225. You could also look into a Honda CRF230L (though they were only imported in 2008-2009, I think? and are pretty rare), or an older Kawasaki KLR250 might fill the bill for a budget used bike. But if you aren't in a hurry then hold out for that XT225 over the winter, hopefully one will turn up. Good luck and keep me posted on your search!

@@jimmytmoto Actually the DR200 looks pretty spiffy if I want to stay around that size. The XT225 sounds pretty good also, plus the 6th gear opens up options a bit. Thanks for your response, once I sell my K1200LT (apparently I promised my wife once I would only have one bike at a time, lol) I can do some wheelin deelin. I would still prefer FI overall and the crf250l also looks good. 215 pounds so a few more lbs. of torque would also be nice, too many diverging vectors, dangit :)

Great review, well said, i agree, my 1999 XT225 is at 14k miles too, i also use Mobil 1, change it every 1k miles, ill tell you this, get on HotFootMoto . com and order their XT225 chain slider, its about $38 bucks, its a unique design, no need to remove the swing arm to install it, my stock chain slider EXPLODED at 13k miles, and it broke one of the rear rim spokes when it happened, so i replaced those 2 items, only other issue i had was a slight engine oil leak from the clutch side, $12 for a new gasket and that fixed that, same as you, i ride my bike to its fullest potential, i really push it on the street too, just like you said, my bike is %100 stock and runs great, do the chain slider, trust me, the same happened to my buddy's xt225 at 12k miles, the plastic gets really hard and brittle. you should check out the xt225 and xt250 owners group on facebook. what rear rack and bag are you using?
