    Glad I could help. I do numerous types of see with this thing now, and I find matching the seed plate to the seed seed size helps a ton to eliminate double or triple plants and just tape off some holes to get the spacing you want

    Thank you. Been growing sweet corn and sunflowers for years and sowing by hand was becoming too much as I get older and the patches became bigger. Last season I purchased and tried the earthway seeder to do my corn, it was a huge timesaver. I still did the sunflowers by hand and then wondered if the sweet corn plate would feed sunflower seeds. Right now I’m about to plant again for this season and will definitely be seeding both with the Earthway.

    That's great to hear! I'm going to try a bit of sweet corn for the first time this year. Got any tips for a newbie corn grower?

    @@WoodsTreeFarm yeah I do, and I’ve learned the hard way. If you’re not planting much corn, put it in a “patch” instead of just one or two rows (this helps with pollination) and pick just one “flavor” or species. I’m not a biologist, but when varieties cross pollinate the results are typically less desirable than when just one type is growing. Multiple varieties can be grown successfully if you keep them in separate patches with a couple hundred yards between them. I don’t know what your situation is, I’m fortunate enough to have a huge yard as well as access to some unused farm land, so I am able to try 3 or 4 varieties in a season. Oh, and corn loves to eat, fertilizer should be applied while sowing seeds and again once established and about “knee high”. During the second feeding I put it on pretty heavy and wait about a week. If they don’t show signs of being slightly burnt(dried up)from the fertilizer, I’ll feed again and repeat until they do. Feed early and heavy, and provided there’s not a drought, they will recover, shoot up and fill out very well. It’s a bit of a juggling act, but error on the side of over feeding early on before the summer heat and they will produce.

  • @WoodsTreeFarm

    Yes it would work but you could end up with multiple seeds per cup and then you may want to thin plants after they sprout. The different brands of seeders come with different seed plates and there may be a pumpkin plate available. I don't recall if my set has one or not.

    i wonder if it is possible to put down granulated fertilizer with it by taking the plow portion off (or not, depends on if you want the fertilizer placed deep in soil) and just running the seeder with fertilizer in it right beside there plants or just down a row.. maybe use the corn seeder disc..

    Might have to look into that depending on what else we decide to plant - especially if we do any veggies. My tiller is 36" so for sunflowers, I just drop a line down about 6" inside the tilled edge, then each of my rows are at least 18" apart. Thanks!

    We had ordered from myseeds.co, but seems they're offline right now. We've already expanded our plot for next year, planted annual rye for cover, and added fertiilizer and lime. Next year we're going bigger and looking at doing some varieties with shorter maturation. The mammoths take too long! haha.

    What kind of sunflower seeds? Just wondering about the length. I have some black oil branching type and different single stem procut. Think the procuts are smaller. Is the corn plate the biggest? How far apart does it seed?

  • @WoodsTreeFarm

    @WoodsTreeFarm

    4 жыл бұрын

    We're doing mammoths, which should be about 18" apart and the seeder does 9", so we'll be a little tight. We could fill every other hole with wax, but we haven't done that yet. I figured we'll how this first batch comes up and plant some more later to have staggered harvest. I found this guide for the seed plates which was helpful www.mullerseeds.com/media/wysiwyg/pdf/Seedplates_overview.pdf
