This is a time lapse of a 1223 pound giant pumpkin from seed to scale. It was grown from a seed out of the 2009 pound world record pumpkin grown by Ron Wallace in Rhode Island.

I'm a novice but I've done a fair bit of research. Keeping it adequately fed and watered is important, of course. But there are a few special tricks. Namely, pruning off all of the other pumpkins on the vine so that single vine can focus its energy solely on that 1 pumpkin is important. Also, burying the vine is crucial. When the vine is buried it grows roots along the entire vine, which gives this plant a MASSIVE root system.
@mattradach306

Having a seed with good genetics is the most important thing. The seed for this plant came from a pumpkin that was the world record holder at the time. The second most important thing is the soil. I send out samples for detailed testing at a lab. This allows me to fine tune the nutrients to a pumpkins needs. As for growing techniques There are many things we do. As Aaron mentioned we keep one pumpkin per plant and we also bury the vines to encourage rooting. We also have specific pruning techniques to keep the plant optimal. Another secret is something called Mychorizae. It is biologic additive that is actually a fungi that grows on the roots. It works symbiotically with the roots and allows the plant to take up more nutrients. Watering is very key and us done with drip irrigation. It's always tricky to find the right balance between giving it enough water and overwatering but I would say at peak growth I average about 100 gallons per day for one plant. Beyond that there is a very specific fertilizing program that shifts throughout the year to give the plant what it needs. Some growers will actually send tissue samples from the plant to be analyzed at a lab so they know exactly what to add.

Hi! I am a teacher and my students (preschool) would like to know why did you put a container on the pumpkin plant when it grows. Also, you put sometimes a "cardboard" when the pumpkin grows. Why? Thank you in advance for taking time to answer us.
@mattradach306
7 жыл бұрын
I put the container over it early in the spring to give it a little more insulation on cold spring nights. The card board is for shade to keep the sun off of the fruit because the sun can make the skin toughen up prematurely and crack. Usually we just put a sheet over the pumpkin to keep the sun off but since I was doing a time lapse and didn't want the pumpkin covered, I had to get creative with the shading.

Hi man, how big was your cold frame and what was the temperature you had outside?
@mattradach306
9 жыл бұрын
The main part of the cold frame is about 12 feet wide x 8 feet long. And then there is another section off the end of it that is about 6' wide x 4' long. I am on an Island an hour north of Seattle so its a pretty cool climate. Temps in April and May are usually in the upper 40's to low 50's at night and upper 50's to low 60's in the day. The cold frame keeps it about 10 degrees warmer at night and it can get very warm in the day depending on how much you vent it. I also use a soil heating cable with a thermostat that keeps the ground in about a 6' circle around the base of the plant at 72 degrees.

@mattradach306
2 жыл бұрын
This is the way they grow naturally. Some growers do try to grow them with the Stem on top but there are many issues with it. The blossom end opposite the stem are the thinnest part of the pumpkin and are susceptible to rot so we dont like to have them down in the dirt. Also if you grow it upright, the vine has to go up and over the top of the pumpkin so as a pumpkin grows it starts to put stress on the stem and can actually break the vine. Prize money and bragging rights are based solely on weight so you dont see many people going to the effort to grow one with the stem up. Some times I will grow them on their side and then tip them up on the end for display. If you look at my profile pic that's what I did with that one.
