Things would be way different if he all in into DBS instead. That time the price was $30 now $36. $300,000 = 10,000 shares. $300,000 would turn into $360,000. $3.56 worth of dividends x 10,000 shares = $35,600 That's a upside of $95.6k in 2 years oh gosh

Most investors should diversify across geographies and asset classes unfortunately most do not

Every investor will make "rookie mistake" at some point of their journey... Unfortunately, Steven Lim's mistake costs him $120,000. Seems like he is making another mistake by asking people online on "what toys or car should I buy with the cash". 🤦‍♂

Painful loss but kudos to him for not feeling the pain by saying he has $180K to splash. Interesting mindset. Or is he hiding his pain?

This is the most common mistake in trading, call confirmation bias. simply means fall in love with a stock.

Don't do business w frens unless you're ok with losing both money and the friendship.

That’s a big lost n nobody wants to lose that kind of money. however,to him,it’s done, it’s probably a hard decision for him to make but he did n just happy that he still has $180K left. If he is smart engage @Joshtan to deploy the $180K n he might recover some of the $120K with time.

Why would anyone invest in a business that has a great risk of not making any profits. Postage business are by definition a public service - it is meant as a social service for the public, i.e. it does not need to be profitable because it serves an important public sector service which the private sector doesnt invest much in it - just like infrastructure. Sure postage companies can diversify by delivering overseas and earn some of volume profits - but it single purpose is purely to deliver to you no matter how far you are - even if the cost of delivering the goods to you is more than the revenue earn from that route.

Postage business was lucrative many years back and a monopoly.

To comment on the part of cutting a position in a stock. If it’s to take profits, may not be a bad idea to cut in batches when the stock price is on the way up. However, if the fundamentals had worsen or the thesis that had allured you to buy in the first place had changed radically, then I think is wise to close the position in entirety in one go. Yes, the stock price may rebound for whatever reasons in the near term, but from a risk management point of view, holding on to a position where the thesis had changed negatively is akin to gambling or speculation.

180K isn't a huge sum of money nowadays. Earn some decent interest from T bill while shopping ard for ideal counters to re invest. Buying a car with yur last pile is like committing suicide imho.

two mistakes here. first, you dont sell a good asset (SG property) secondly to compound your mistake, you went for an inferior product (SG stocks). SG property can buy. SG stocks cannot. all the catalist one please run away.

There's money to make, as long as you look hard enough... For example: In the past 10+ years, I've invested in SG banks whenever their P/B ratio fell below 0.9 and sold when above 1.2 (note, usually within 1 year). This happened several times over the past 10+ years and I've made good returns each time. Obviously, I would have been better off buying and holding S&P500 ETF, but that's not the point I am trying to make.

If the 300k into bitcoin will be Different

Where to buy Bitcoin from? If I use CMC, I have to pay 50% upfront for 1 bitcoin and to pay high interest on the 50% of the borrowed amount. Any other avenue to buy bitcoin and not to pay high interest?

firstly, he probably would have made huge gains by literally doing nothing aka not selling his HDB Next even if he insisted to buy something with the 300k all at once, i would have at least bought an ETF, maybe STI if he insist on getting into SG market Lastly if he really want to YOLO his money like he did, why not go into something like bitcoin? yes bitcoin is high risk but its also high return. throwing all into singpost is high risk but LOW return. singpost is not going to give you 10-100% gains anytime soon
