I agree that it doesn't hurt to have a few Thai words / phrases learnt before you travel to Thailand. If I were telling people just a handfull of words / phrases to learn based on the fact that Thai's are a polite and respectful people, I would go with a top ten of: - Kharp Kun Kap - Thankyou - Churn na Kap - After you - Lair Gon - See you later - Pood eek tee - Say that again please - Sawat Dee Kap - Hello / Goodbye - kahtort Kap, Pom Mai Koh Chai - Sorry, I don't understand - Kun Sabai dee mai? - How are you? - Tao Rai - How Much? - Bpai Tee Nai - Go Here - Bpai Tee Non - Go there The last three also using pointing If you memorise just those ten it will put you head and shoulders above most tourists and as you say, the Thai's will treat you in a far more freindly manner for trying even if you get the pronouniation slightly wrong (its a tonal language with five tones so the word said a diffferent pitches can mean totally different things).

Having lived in Mexico twice, Bali, and Chang Mai I would tell new expats that you don't need to really worry about the language issue. Learn a few phrases, but SOMEBODY will speak English. And if you have never lived outside your country you will be constantly checking the exchange rate when it comes to withdrawing money. And in Thailand withdrawals all come with a 220 baht fee so take out the maximum. Charles Schwab refunds all ATM fees if you are an American.

Let me add: 13. Don't be afraid to try street food. It's safe, especially if you pick busy stalls and stalls frequented by locals. 14. Don't be afraid of consuming drinks with ice. Almost all ice in tourist areas is made in an ice plant that uses filtered or treated water, even the street vendors get ice deliveries during the day. 15. Unless you have a particularly sensitive digestive system, it's safe to brush your teeth with tap water. Just, don't swallow it. If you are sensitive, brush your teeth with bottled water. 16. If you get sick, the Thai chemists or pharmacists are more capable that typical western chemists or pharmacists. In Thailand, they are the first line of defense and can take care of most illnesses. If you do have to go to a hospital, most Thai doctors are trained in the west and are very good. In many cases, tourists are treated as royalty by hospital staff. Enjoy your trip.

People living in Pattaya don't like Bangkok and the reverse is also true! 😂 Bangkok is a great city with a lot of things to do. The problems is : It's huge and starting from 4.30pm to 11am forget about the taxis, you might loose 2 or 3h in the traffic and you won't know about the distance. If you come on holidays to have fun, pick up a girl you like and if you had good time with her, bring her to have lunch with you on the day after, then ask her to make you visit interesting places outside the big Buddha and all that kind of places, also to bring you in typical restaurants, night markets etc

You need to learn how to drive in Thailand. 1st their is a hierarchical system. Motorbikes fall below cars and above bicycles and pedestrians. Taxis, Grab, and other delivery drivers are working, let them pass if there are near you. Learn the risky areas to drive and times. Keep steady speed and direction. Do not drive fast in the city, only as fast as you can avoid potential threats. Buy a jacket that is a high visibility color that stands out from the environment (Medium blue, red, Yellow, Orange, Lime Green). Lastly do NOT get angry or yell at other drivers, it almost always ends poorly.

@@jbranche8024 I think it's a better idea to use "Baht buses" and app-based taxi services instead. Safer, less stress, often cheaper and it keeps the not-so-wealthy Thai folks employed.

I came to Thailand in 2006-2007 and lived there until 2017. I wish I had known a bit of Thai before I came. If you can converse a bit in Thai, prices magically drop. (Especially when it comes to telling taxi drivers to turn on the meter!) Also, I wish I had found an old veteran expat to learn from early on, rather than later. Talking to an expat who lives in Thailand can really, really help you.

Tips for Thailand. First that I can think of is don't take anything with you that you cannot fit in your carry on bag. The shoes/jeans that you are wearing will last. A couple of changes of shirt as you will sweat (a lot) no matter how fit you are, and... Well, thats about it! Saves time at the airport and once in your hotel you buy a suitcase for the return journey and fill it with clothes from the market which is just as good as the stores over your stay.... Oh, and bring cash. Cash is king. I found that outside tourist hotspots / international stores very few places accept cards.

I am currently viewing tons of videos about Thailand. I wanted to ask how much US dollars you pay a month for rent/lease for 1 year, and does your apartment come with Internet, washer/dryer , fridge, microwave and or stove? Did it come furnished ? Are you near a grocery store or mall? Where may I purchase a motorbike if and when I get settled ? Do I have to have a Thailand bank account before I move there and what app will I need to pay with US/Bhat money? So far I like the attitude "Don't cheap out" I am looking at a price range where you are living currently I guess! If you can take the time to answer my questions it would be great! I am planning on retiring at 62 and make residence in Pattaya. Thanks!

I feel different about Bangkok. Khao San Road is great for young travelers on budget. I like going just to get day tours to different places. So you can stay in Bangkok a few days. Ayutthaya was one of those trips. The old Capitol of Thailand. The Kings Summer Palace. And there is a lot more going on. Nicely priced hotels along Sukhumith Road. Pattaya and Hua Hin are just seedy places. There are attractions near them. I prefer Chiang Mai. Not as sleazy as other tourist destination.

All good. Mostly applicable re food in places like Pattaya. Westen food a little harder to find up in the provinces, but still available. Re ladyboys. Yes, 100% correct, very much overblown. Also you can tell pretty easily by the voice. Only thing you missed was the importance of staying hydrated. The little pharmacies all over the place sell packets of electrolytes you can mix with water for something like 30 bhat for a packet of 3. If you are prone to heat cramps and dehydration this is a good thing to help. Just mix in a bottle of water and you are good. 2 or 3 packets a day with regular water consumption will make a differnce. Also watch alcohol consumption. In the bar you can order a soda water with lime and looks like you are drinking. Always good to watch hydration.

The silver lining to you not readily enjoying Thai food is that you are likely avoiding the unhealthy aspects of many "street foods" there. Although such meals often contain a variety of healthy ingredients, the finished product is typically high in: * "seed oils"; * refined sugar, corn syrup or other such sweeteners; * MSG.

I've been to Thailand 4 times plus I studied in Bangkok. I do like your videos (watched a couple now), but I really had to laugh out loud on this one. Tip 9: Bangkok isn't the "true Thailand experience" and then mentioning Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi and Pattaya for the more authentic Thai experience. U must be joking? These are literally the least Thai areas in entire Thailand. Unfortunately I, and I bet many others that have been to Thiland, can't take you seriously as an "Thailand expert". Keep it up tho

  • @TravelGlitch

Never claim to be a Thailand expert at all, quite the amateur! What I'm saying is those on holiday could get more from their HOLIDAY by spending it in other areas as mentioned. In terms of authentic Thai experience of course, it's the capital, but I should have elaborated on what I was meaning, directly speaking to those on holiday, therefore visiting the other popular areas may be some good advice, was for me and others I've spoke to 👍
