Firefight footage from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) shows infantrymen of the 101st Airborne Division, along with their Afghan National Army (ANA) counterparts, turning the tables during a Taliban ambush and getting the upper hand.
The ambushed men react violently by immediately returning fire to known or suspected enemy locations. Squad leaders and team leaders refine their actions by maneuvering machine-gunners and grenadiers to better avenues of fire while still working out distance, direction, and descriptions of their targets and trying to minimize the chance of friendly fire.
In this instance, the enemy fighters tried a hit-and-run attack, but the US soldiers are able to get them pinned down before they can escape. The squad leader uses his radio to call up to platoon and company level leadership to orchestrate some sort of flanking movement in order to wipe their foes out for good.
I think people tend to gloss over the impact of these conventional units in favor of the "elite" special troops, when it is these infantrymen that did most of the fighting on year-long (minimum) deployments, often without close air support overhead, or even on standby. These are the heavy lifters of that era of the GWOT.

Then the surviving Mujahadeen we've been supporting since the 80s formed a coalition to resurrect their homeland and fight the Taliban forces. Just so you know the Taliban are not the mujahadeen, they formed as a seperate group gunning for power after the soviet invasion.

Not really. Ambushers only have a small window of opportunity to have any meaningful effect before they're forced to break off. Afghan ambushes tend to be fucking worthless because these assholes engage from a mile away with ineffective fire and sometimes don't even break off; allowing the regulars to figure out a plan and destroy them.

They use the word ambush sparingly in the title. I prefer to call it what it is, annoying harassment fire. A real ambush intends to actually destroy its target with withering fire & maneuver. These clowns know they'll lose that situation EVERY time so they just spray & pray area fire from like 800-1200m out in hopes they might get lucky & if they don't they can just run away or hope we get bored & leave. What these chuckle fucks failed to realize is that Charlie, 2/502 dealt with this annoying shit almost daily in Iraq & we got damn good at coordinating fires to pin shitheads down long enough close the gap & kill them or hold them long enough to drop IDF or CAS on their heads.
That RPG power stance by the ANA guy was fucking epic!
