10 Ways French People Say "Oui" - Understand Spoken French

I’m willing to bet that “oui” is one of the very first words that you learned in French, right? Good! It’s important to be able to say “yes” in every language you plan to speak, as well as understand when someone else is speaking affirmatively.
But… “oui” will only get you so far if you hope to understand everyday French conversations. Of course we say “oui” a lot in French; but we also say more than a dozen other words to express ourselves when we want to say “yes”.
The same thing happens in English - or whatever your native language may be. You might say “of course”, “okay”, or “absolutely”. The same is true in French! Let’s go over some of the most common ways to say “yes” in French (without saying “oui”) so you can express yourself differently AND better understand everyday French conversations.

I found this useful, but please could you also clarify when it is appropriate to use 'si'?

Si is used when disagreeing with a negatively constructed statement. If someone says, “You don’t have a car.l (“Tu n’as pas de voiture),” but you want to contradict that, you would say, “Yes, I do have one.” (“Si, j’en ai une”.) If you wanted to agree with the original statement, you would say, “Yes, it’s true, I don’t have one,” you would say, “Ouais, c’est vrai, je n’en ai pas.”

@@patwelsh5561 Yes, that's what I was taught at school, but I've noticed when French people are chatting, they tend to use 'si' in more varied circumstances. I'd like a Géraldine-style guide to its formal/informal usage.

@@marijo1951 Very interesting. I rarely hear it used, so I’d like to learn more about it too.
