10 Watches Used In Space

This year 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. During the last 60 years, various countries have sent their own personnel into space. This is a list of watches used in space during those significant events.

I'm surprised you missed Yema (France) whose Spationaute watches went to space in 1982, 1985 and 1988. From their website: "In 1982 a French Spaceman, Jean-Loup Chrétien, flew from the Baikonour base for a 10-day trip into space. On his wrist, he wears the very first French watch in outer space, the Yema Spationaute 1. In 1985 the Discovery shuttle takes off with on board Patrick Baudry and his Yema Spationaute II for the first Franco-American orbital flight mission. In 1988, Jean-Loup Chrétien visits the Mir Orbital Station with his Yema Spationaute III."

When I learned of the Bulova Mood watch I had to have one, and I do.Love it, keeps incredibly accurate time, only changed with the twice yearly time zone change: usually less than 8 seconds off the NIST atomic clock.

Had a Speedmaster 1861 moonwatch but i prefer my GShock GMWB5000 solar which is the metal version of the 5600. I believe a solar watch would benefit Astronauts without having to wind or worry about battery life

Great video and list. I own 5 of the watches listed and hope to get more in the future. At the end of your video you mention private companies and what watches they may use. I own a Luminox Automatic Chrono that was licensed by a private company called Xcor Aerospace... they are now defunct but hey, it's still a very cool watch and has a space theme. :)

That “Bulova” was a Universal Geneve with a Bulova logo. Omar Bradley was president of Bulova ,who owned UG at that time, and tried to pass a UG off as an American Watch. They wanted to get the Gov contact. NASA didn’t fall for it. Also, look closely at Pete Conrad’s wrists in the pictures taken after recovery from his Gemini mission. Left wrist, Speedmaster. Right wrist, Glycine Airman. Jet pilots of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s loved them.

Suspect or not, I still like, and want to get one of the Bulova Lunar Pilot watches, since it's an order of magnitude more affordable than any Omega Speedmaster and still has that tie to a watch that did work on the moon. Being able to own something even distantly related to the achievements made in the Apollo missions just makes my space nerd side giddy. Probably will grab one of the listed Casio G-Shocks too, no shame in having a borderline unkillable watch, had too many "fitness trackers" and a "Smart watch" that couldn't even withstand daily use, let alone rough handling at far higher prices

I would not say that a negative display is an update. As a negative display will never be as easy to read as the positive version of the same model. And especially for an astronaut, efficiency will be more important than "but it looks cool".

Fortis developed the Spacematic ar (all risks) and have them to the Gemini crews. In their literature Fortis states at least one went up on a mission. I have not been able to confirm which mission it was or who wore it. Looking at numerous NASA photos it is common to see astronauts wearing a watch on each wrist.

Ph MWU I had just about come to that conclusion. Fortis is doing a time honored Swiss watchmaking trick - fluffing up their history. They claim NASA astronauts wore the Fortis Spacematic all risks during training and at least one was worn on a mission. Fortis May have developed the AR and given them to the Gemini astronauts. That gave them a small truth to expand on with creative marketing. At least their link to Roscosmos is legitimate.
