Omega Speedmaster Alternatives - Top 10 Space Watches - $50 To Luxury
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
As promised during my Breitling Cosmonaute unboxing video a few months ago, I’ve put together a list for the good Gentry featuring the top 10 watches that also went to space.
But there’s a twist!
I’ve made countless videos on the iconic NASA approved Omega Speedmaster, but in this video I focus on 10 alternatives that vary from a $50 digital watch to highly desired luxury timepieces. So step into your space suit and prepare for launch as we take a look at keeping time beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Join me on this journey as we continue onwards and a little further upwards!

Fun fact: I was issued a G-Shock DW5600 when I entered US Air Force navigator training in January 1990--and it's still running ON THE SAME BATTERY! 32 years as of this month.
Thank you very much for putting FORTIS within the Top-3 space going brands. The whole FORTIS Team wishes you a great start in Philly. All the best!!

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this but is there any plans to re-release the Fortis 100 Years book? I know its available in PDF format but nothing beats sitting down in a leather arm chair with a good book.

Fortis is one of the brands which till recently escaped my attention. I´ll have to remedy that asap. The B42 looks like a winner to me.

1994 - 2019 was 25 years FORTIS in the Russian manned spaceflight program #MoonwatchUniverse
The mighty Vostok Amphibia also made it into space during the Interkosmos missions!
As someone who works in the aerospace industry and has a passion for human space travel, this video is like crack. Thank you! Now I have 10 watches I need to buy.
Great video, but some remarks: 2:30 first wristwatch in space was a PODEBA "Victory" worn by space dog Chernuchka on March 9, 1961... Gagarin wore a 17 jewels SHTURMANSKIE "Navigator" on April 12, 1961 3:02 the STRELA "Arrow" was not worn in open space but underneath the Berkut space suit of Alexei Leonov on March 18, 1965... so the Speedmaster was first on June 3, 1965 11:47 a bold claim that the Apollo 8 carried Rolex GMT-master watches to the Moon... they did use these in training but Jack Swigert was the first to carry a Rolex GMT to the Moon 1970 14:04 FORTIS Cosmonauts chronograph was first used in open space by the Soyuz TM-19 (Mir-16) resident crew on September 9, 1994 ... So 1994-2019 = 25 years FORTIS in space !!! Always glad to help as with cooperation we can achieve great things as nobody cares who gets the credit...

Indeed, I had found somewhere another comment about the Pobeda (or Kirovskie) that an engineer gave that dog for its flight. Btw, wasn't the Soviet Air Force version a 15 jewels one? As for the Strela, are you sure? Considering the grand claims of some Russian brands nowadays (that may be partly false).

Glycine Airman was with the Speedy...
Absolutely love my Speedy Pro-however I do have moments when I miss my old Bulova Lunar Pilot. Such a brilliant underrated piece
Gona miss the old war room 😪
Just got my Speedie Pro in last Thursday. It already has its own dedicated drawer compartment in my dresser, I’ve read every page of the included ‘Legendary Speedmaster’ booklet, I’ve wound it every morning as a ritual and wore it after work in the evenings on and off. Still pinching myself to have THEE grail - and the quintessentially American ‘Swiss Made’ piece, in a sense, if that makes sense. Lol. What a dream come true. Always loved manual wind chrono’s. Now I own the ultimate example. Timeless and flawless design; unmatched history. Perfection. Blessed. Truly blessed.

With Seiko's new business model if they did reissue the Pogue they'd now make it more expensive than a Speedmaster
An awesome VLOG with such wonderful content as always TGV, THANK YOU.
TGV, a wonderful segment. Your knowledge of and even reverence for the history behind these and other watches is a meaningful addition to the various KZread contributors’ presentations. Keep it up !
Quality, informative video as always. Nice work TGV
Man the 60s & 70s were the golden decades of aviation. Space exploration, going to the moon, the Cold War with the U2 & SR-71 (A-12). Agree, Bulova, Fortis and Rolex GMT are the unsung heroes for this era!
I just love these analyses and historical overviews. Thanks
BRAVO! Thank you TGV! Just when I really needed an engaging piece on watches - you came through again! You and your channel speak to ALL of us - regardless of our economic status. You promote horology at every level; you educate, explain, and make the watch-world more accessible. I frequently pause play to look up the watch or brand, and you always leave me wanting to learn more! Thank you, TGV - PLEASE don't stop doing videos like these! I hope the move went well!
Great video I just discovered this channel and subbed straight away. Learn alot in this video and have been watch loads of your older videos.
Amazing video. Terrific piece of work.
Fantastic video. The production was spot on. You’re a pleasure to listen to and follow. GL with your move 👍🏻
Well documented and edited video on a great topic. Thank you.

Astounding detail and history behind these amazing time pieces, but with all the charm and class as we've come to expect from TGV. This is exactly why it's one of the best watch channels.
Very informative video...keep the good work.,...and you are making me buy another watch..
Congrats on the move, TGV, and good luck! Great video! I'm a huge aviation/space fan with a bucket list that includes owning an example of all the watches that have ever been to space... 🚀 Thanks for making it!

Thank you TGV for another great upload! I also have to thank you for your videos on the Seiko Ripley. I bought the black and white version, the SCED041 (the xenomorph as I like to call it) a few days ago and I am in love with it! If it wasn't for your videos I would probably have dismissed the listing and I would had lost this legend!
Another great video. Absolutely love your videos where history comes along with watches. In addition perfectly fitting delicate music in background. Please, don't stop making them. Lots of things will change for you now but hopefully not the way you doing watch you doing. Wish you all best.
Brilliant mate, best of success witb your new venture! Cheers, Craig
I am amazed at how much research went into the making of this video. Thanks for the education.

Great video, TGV! It so happens that I've just returned from a 2-week trip to three of the major NASA centers (Johnson in Houston, Marshall in Alabama, and Kennedy at Cape Canaveral), and I was pleased to see exhibits showcasing historically important watches in spaceflight. Omega has a HUGE presence at Space Center Houston, where they have loaned mock-ups of the Speedy to be displayed on many spacesuits, and even have a giant version of a Speedmaster hanging in the main visitor area (which appropriately functions as a big clock). I also saw a Timex owned by astronaut Ed White and another owned by Wernher Von Braun. I did my level best to document these and other watches on my trip using my phone camera, but the lighting conditions were unfortunately not ideal. I'm working on a way to share these photos with the Urban Gentry community.
Another great video! Thanks again for making me spend a fortune on watches! 😄✌🏼 Good luck with the move.
Very informative as ever. Good luck with the move
I always learn so much from your videos. keep up the good work and best wishes in your own mission to philly! #1 watch channel on Utube no doubt about it.
Great video, many thanks
That was a great show T! Love the Breitling especially. The only watch that I own in that list is my Seiko Pogue. Best Regards Stuart
Good evening from Murcia, Spain. I'm in love with watches so I have no choice but to follow your channel. Congratulations for the work you do, thank you very much for letting us know so many watches. You have a new fan and admirer in Spain. Un abrazo campeón.
After many months with a lot of work and having changed my residence, finally I can enjoy your videos, again. I see many changes there as well...Congratulations for your association with Watchbox, well done! Great video as always. I have had a Strela Chronograph for 2 years, it is not a watch you see very often, and I must say this is a beautiful watch with a very interesting history and I love it, specially being under the radar for most people (at least until now, haha). All the best, Tristano!

Thanks, very well presented. I love this topic and yes I do own a Speedy Pro, my favorite space watch but wouldn't mind getting one or two from your list. Good luck with your move.
A very good video. Enjoy this very much. 👍
What a great video! I just found your channel last week and my watch collection is going to explode because of it, your enthusiasm for horology is infectious. I love watches that can endure the harshest conditions and what is harsher than the vacuum of space? Currently wearing my Casio G-Shock GW-5610.
Another great video. Love the Fortis!
Great vid! And now, on to the next chapter. Here's to the future!
Thanks for this amazing lineup of space watches. Added to my wishlist. God willing I'll own them all one day including the speedmaster ofcourse.
Outstanding presentation!

Bravo Bravo TGV! The video I have long waited for! Thanks for all your interesting and sometimes inspiring videos! Pleased to have a few of the cheaper watches in this list...hmmmm I think I need to save up for the others!!
Great video TGV like always !
Great vid, great to learn about brands that would otherwise have passed me by..
Hi TGV. Good luck with the new digs and career in Philly and I look forward to seeing new content.
Great video! I love space watches, and have a 1950s Sturmanskie and a 1990s GMT Master; I tried to get a Pobeda a year or so ago, but the deal went bad with the Russian watch dealer( from whom I had previously successfully bought a Zlatoust191 Soviet hard hat divers watch, and other vintage Russian watches), so I did not get the watch. Thanks for the info, although this is a mixed blessing, as my ‘shopping list’ grows ever longer, and I’m retired on a limited income. So many watches; the list goes on. Patience is a Virtue.
I’m very pleased to see the Strela on the list, as it’s one of my favorite classic chronographs, but the rest of the list was great as well. Alas, the Speedmaster is still one of my grail watches.
Anything about space interests me, very enjoyable video. Hope your move goes smoothly and good luck in Philadelphia ✌️
My Fortis chronograph is one of my best looking watches and the quality is on par with my Omega. Glad to see them get a mention here!
This is the best part of my day now
You have great skills of video editing man ! Keep up 👍🏼
Really entertaining video, thank you.
Terrific as usual TGV. Hope the move goes well!
A slight correction. Not all gold Seiko 6139s are pouges. Yes they look almost identical but the difference is the "WATER 70M RESIST" at the 9 0'clock position, "17J" above the Suwa logo at 6 O'clock and "6009T" between 5 and 4 is a good way to tell that it's a proper pouge plus the reference and date but that's the quick way to tell. Hope this helps, TGV! Great video as always!😎👊
Good luck on the move!! We will all miss the old war room. Looking forward to the future! Cheers 🍻
I recently purchased the commemorative edition of the Bulova Lunar Pilot (#5 on your list). I love this watch. Whenever I wear it out, I always get compliments on it (mainly from active or retired military personnel). It has a great fit and is easy to read. No corners cut making this. Being a Seiko man, this is only my 2nd Bulova but definitely not going to be my last.

Love my Bulova Devil Diver re-issue. I think they are another tragically underappreciated brand.
Every time you do this my favorite Seiko 6139 prices go up again!
I'll miss the old Queens war room. But I have very fond memories of Philly and I look forward to your getting established there. All the best and have a successful move. Tchuss!
Good quality vid. Very interesting.
Other watches: We’ve been to space, gracing the wrists of astronauts. G-Shock: Me too. I’ve also been to space, alone. 😂
Just picked a brand new Bulova Lunar Pilot up in the Black Friday Sales, waited for ages to get it in a sale but finally I can add one to my collection. All the versions were available, that’s the bead blasted original release with the two straps and date function, the black version, the bracelet version and the latest polished version with no date and the original Bulova text on the face, I went for the latter as it looks the most like the original. I also ignored all the “it’s too big” comments everybody leaves on any forum about it, I’ve got a seven and a quarter inch wrist so I’m hoping it’ll wear well.
Another dual time zone pilot watch that has been to space is the Glycine Airman. It's argubly the first dual time zone pilot watch (having a 24hr movement paired with a rotating 24hr bezel) while Rolex made the first GMT movement, but both were popular with pilots and, like the GMT-Master, an Airman made it into space as a personal watch. Apparently, he (I forget which astronaut off the top of my head) didn't bring it specifically on a moon mission, however, but there's pics of it on him for his other trips into space. Oddly enough, while having a Strela chronograph specifically because it has been to space and having the Omega Speedmaster Professional at the top of my wishlist, I didn't know the Glycine Airman was a space watch until well after I got one. I simply wanted a 24hr movement watch and lucked on to a good sale on an Airman Purist.
Good luck with the move, brother! And congratulations on the new gig!
Outstanding, thank you for entertainment.
I agree the Fortis brand is so underrated.. The phantom f-4f Phorever is my favorite pilot watch of all time.
@urbangentry would you know where one can buy a velcrostrap wide 24mm..? I have looked, I think, everywhere.
Tgv you legend, ive been waiting foe this video for ages.
Thank you Sir! What do you make of the Pulsar homage as a cheap alternative for those on a tighter budget?
Yay Lemania 5100! I have that movement in a cosmonaut's chrono (among other examples)! Love it, even though it's VERY costly to service.

Thanks TGV, You have created my watch shopping list. I will be aiming for the Seiko and Sinn first as the design is just so different to the 'normal' watches.
Great video, thanks! I do fully agree, that Fortis is highly underrated. I love my Fortis B42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph. Excellent design and quality, great value for money.

Very entertaining!
Always a great combination, spaceflight and watches. Please take care while moving your stuff.
The Christopher ward C1 moonglow has to be one of my most anticipated moon related watch releases. For the first time I would actually consider the speedmaster beat!
Even though I love that you're moving on to WatchBox, I hope this kind of format would still be uploaded monthly since it has your own personal touch to it that we all enjoy. Just one per month would already suffice because I know how hard it is to meticulously edit a video yourself. Not to mention finding all the correct facts and figures to put in one. Here's to a bright future ahead of you TGV! Cheers! Onwards and upwards~!
I had never heard of Rodina before. I've never seen a 50s-60s design quite like it. Gorgeous watches!

Hi TGV just catching up on your back catalogue and just wondered what is the book you are flipping through when you are talking about the Fortis?
Absolutely gorgeous video, greetings from Germany.
Hi TGV, Yema equips the french astronauts with watches. The first Yema Spationaute in space was on the wrist of Jean-Loup Chrétien in 1982.
To change the subject what do you think of the Tavannes Submarine Commander Ref TA A07.111 10 ATM Ltd Ed. Watch #A101 ?
Love the Seiko Astronaut worn by Sally Ride and several other 1980's NASA astronauts.
Hey there! I have a Breitling Aerospace Chrono and I want the hands and indices re-lumed. I know you've said who you use, but I've watched SO many of your videos I can't recall. Who do you recommend doing this work? Thanks a million!
