Cosmic Timekeeping: Digital Watches in Space

Today we have an overview of the awesome array of different digital watches that have made their way into space from the likes of Casio, G-shock, Protrek, Seiko, Timex, Breitling, Elektronika 5, Unitra Warel and Halda .
Alongside the more commonly referenced Seiko Astronaut A829 Rotocall, G-Shock DW5600 C and E , Timex Datalink and both the Omega X-33 Speedmaster Professional and Skywalker, we also hear about less commonly referenced models such as the Unitra Warel , deeper cuts from the Casio catalog like the JP-200W the Halda Space Module Digital Chronograph and even a cheeky appearance from the original timex iron triathlon and Cady Coleman's wrist.

I’ve been looking forward to this video and it did not disappoint! Knowing a watch went to space just makes it so much cooler 🚀 And this video helps show it doesn’t have to be a Speedmaster, there are so many space watches out there to suit almost any budget.

I found another fairly random/cool one whilst I was researching one the watches I have (thought you’d like to add this to your knowledge bank :) :- “The seiko RC-4000 series watches were so useful at the time that NASA gave them to the astronauts on the Space Shuttle "Atlantis" on Mission STS-43 in 1991, which allowed them to connect to a Macintosh computer and communicate with Mission Control via a Fax Modem, so they could send information and reminder alarms”

Also Elektronika 1 Pulsar watch from Soyuz 32 and Soyuz 35 was super cool. Actually it was a very first digital watch in space.

Another great video so informative, thanks ! ..you’ll be the worlds leading authority on digital watch history at this rate with the amount of research you must do :) ..did find myself wondering what happened when the Casio got ‘vaporised’ on re-entry though, i have visions of it disappearing into a ‘puff of smoke’ or something cool like that (which I’m sure it didn’t :)….great content/video as usual, genuinely look forward to them ! ..happy new year too ! 👍

Trust me - the real boffins put me to shame. I’m getting a good base across most areas though yes - which is why I really enjoy doing these - it’s an excuse to learn!

Great video as always. Interesting selection of watches in space. I was wondering what the actual effect of being in space is on a watch. I guess so long as it's in with the astronauts and not sent into the cold blackness of space the main differences are lack of gravity and air pressure 🤔☺️

First album I’m space yes. I believe first song may have been jingle bells. There are some DSoTM tracks on delicate sound of thunder as it is a live album
Now im curious about the soviet watches especially the Electronica watches especially the Musical ones

Not fully sure to be honest! When you check the specs side by side the only ones that jumped out at me were 29 vs 31 time zones (although same number of cities ) , 0.5 gram difference in weight and a slight difference in battery longevity. Don’t know for sure though!!

Or could be the backlight. One is super illuminator LED whereas one is electroluminescent …

Apparently is a 1981 armitron radio watch :) there were loads of these radio watches made in China from all sorts of brands. I cover in my 1980s Casio episode I think

Ha so there are watches the are given to them by their agency and “personal watches”.
