Superlative, spot-on take on the Bulova Lunar Pilot Moonwatch. In 1988 I bought a used Speedmaster Professional from a small Manhattan watch store for $375. Along the way I purchased an Omega skeleton back for $25, through a jeweler friend. I also bought the newer Omega button bracelet for $125. In 2014 the watch needed an $800 service. I took advantage of the hot Speedmaster market and sold it for $2,250 on ebay. I also sold the old bracelet for $400, and the original back for $220. I intended to get a new Speedmaster down the line. Then the Bulova Lunar Pilot came out. I waited a bit and bought a minty-mint Lunar Pilot bracelet edition on ebay for $285. It's been my daily driver for 4 years. I just replaced the battery this week, after 4 years of heavy chrono use. Beside timing things, I love watching that main chrono hand sweep. Looks just like an expensive automatic or manual chronograph...except far more accurate.

I agree with your opinion. I own the Lunar Pilot and am delighted with its looks, the contrasting finishes on the case, bezel, crown, chrono buttons and bracelet, the incredible accuracy, durability and lack of need for expensive servicing at a fraction of the purchase cost all make for a very enjoyable, fearlessly wearable piece. Worth every penny, I love it.

I got a lunar pilot about 6 months ago. I got the black version. You get hold of it, feel the solid heft, then you see the accuracy and suddenly all your automatics feel like stone-age toys! After having automatics for years, going back to a quality quartz is actually a real joy. Oh...and it's not too big! In fact a mate of mine has a Speedmaster and he keeps asking to look at my lunar pilot, I think another sale for Bulova is in the wings. If I was going to get a Speedmaster I'd get the MK2 as the Mk1 is wayyyy too common now.

About 22 years ago I kept going in a jewellers to look at the Speedmaster and one day the owner offered me a 10% on it, probably to stop me going in. It would have cost me £900. I never took it. However, two decades later I totally agree with you. A watch has one real job and accuracy is king. Have subscribed.

I have an old very basic Omega “Conny”that’s served me so well over 25 years, but now it’s quasi retired. To replace it I recently bought a PD 1701 and I like it a lot! We all know the Omega moonwatch story/ stories! However, The next target watch for me is a Bulova Lunar Pilot .. great back story too, as it is something I lived through as a young bloke and remember the Apollo space program fondly. Great sharing! Same here, have been collecting watches for almost 10 years , more than 50 watches, own 5 speedy before, one thing i hate most is the bezel/plexiglass of speedmaster easily to be pick up dent or scratches But bulova lunar pilot solve that little cosmetic problem and will definitely save me a lot in servicing costing I own polished version of bulava lunar pilot 96A225 45mm, sit comfortably on my 18.3cm wrist, if you have wrist above 17cm, definitely can wear it Next project, saw someone modify the glass, planning to upgrade to domed sapphire glass 😂

Brilliant review. 100% agree with the opinions expressed in the video. I bought a new Omega Speedmaster 15 years ago. Principally because I loved the way it looked and loved the history. However, it was bloody expensive to buy, bloody expensive to service, and extremely delicate with the hesalite crystal scratching with the slightest of touches. A watch is something to wear and enjoy everyday. My speedy spent more time in a drawer than on my wrist for fear of damaging it. Also the Speedy is such an expensive watch, which I had to manually wind. It would often show the wrong time! The Bulova is far better in every way. Sapphire crystal, 262 ultra high frequency quartz, stunning looks and cool history. The only drawback to the Lunar Pilot is the strap. The fact that the steel bracelet is not compatible with the strap version! Why would anyone design a watch with this stupid design flaw! It absolutely beggars belief. Notwithstanding this idiocy, it is still a fabulous watch. In my opinion the Lunar Pilot is better in all respects to the Omega Speedmaster. I've never looked back from selling my Omega and switching to Bulova.

Picked up the black dark side for $200 in 2019. Put on German Di Modell Chronissimo straps with white stitching. Makes the 20mm look 22mm. This is what a moon watch should be if you have the wrist for it. It checks so many boxes...chrono, flight, moon, legibility with size, accuracy, no servicing costs, etc etc etc. I just bought the titanium 50th anniversary edition. Can't wait to get it next month. Very nicely put, and yes it's our own personal preferences that matter. The Omega speedmaster professional is a lovely watch with its own unique history making it very desirable in its many guises. Also the Bulova Lunar Pilot watch has its own identity, but at its current price point it is an out and out bargain. I have the Bulova Lunar Pilot watch with the two straps version, but the other versions you mention are beautiful piece's. The quality of them at their relevant price points represent stunning value, and quality at the price Sir 👍 Tam.

Hi Tam, Thanks for your input mate.....yes....it's an interesting one....Omega have been punching out so many variations of the Speedy I just think they have diluted what was in essence a classic design up there with the Submariner. Rolex seems to have stayed more in line by only offering a few variations such as anniversary or gold options.....Omega on the other hand seems to be knocking them up based on every idea they can think of....that is a bit off putting for me personally. As an aside.....would you believe that the battery in my Bulova packed up halfway through filming!.....Now I need to try & find a bloody jeweller that can change the battery whilst in lockdown!!....would you believe it!!! I've just ordered one of these myself (ref. 96B258). I considered Casio Oceanus T200 (ordinary quartz w/ radio & bluetooth) and Longines VHP, and those are also really good value watches, but this Lunar Pilot won my final decision. It also ships from within my country (Canada) which helps cut the cost. I think it's smart to get it on the bracelet, because otherwise you won't have the option to install a bracelet later (lug holes are in the wrong place for it on the strap versions). Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this one. Really cool watch!

@@TheWatchChannelAU I've had it for a few days, and it's easily the star of my collection now. The bracelet is comfy, and I got a nice fit for my 20cm wrist by removing 2 full links. It's not perfect: the lume is fairly worthless, and you can't change timezone/DST without re-setting the time. I'm not worried about its shortcomings though, because I feel I found the perfect HAQ _for myself_ (in that there isn't some other HAQ option that I'll be pining for). On top of getting an awesome new watch, I'm also freed from desire for Longines VHP, Grand Seiko (9F-based), and the rest. Those are all great, but I've got my HAQ role filled now! This Bulova will get lots of wrist time for sure. I also get the impression that people worry too much about the crystal. This beauty needs to go places, not be stuck in a watch box. I'm tempted by the Bulova Computron, too. A fun novelty watch, not expensive but also wouldn't be worn a lot if I'm honest with myself.

A lot of watches have been on my wrist, multiple Submariners, Panerai but also the Speedmaster. The Speedmaster Pro was the one that went out with no regrets. It’s cool, historical… well you know, but it just didn’t get a lot of wrist time. I just bought the Bulova this week after it got my attention in YT watch tutorial and I liked it. Ok, it’s “just” a quartz but the high frequency makes it special and the dial looks better than the Speedy imo. It’s a bit bulky but still wearable. Good price point also. I would like to have the Bulova 262kHz three hand watch but it’s not available in Europe unfortunately.

I sold it a year later to help fund my wedding. I received my 2 strap boxed Lunar Pilot this week and bought it boxed new with tags from Canada for (including shipping and import fees) £270. The Omega cost me £3700. I love the Bulova and will wear it daily. If you want an investment piece buy an Speedmaster Pro and never wear it. For all my watches, automatic/mechanical or quartz, I always set the date using quick set one day behind. So for example it's the 25th, then I'd set the day to 24 using the quick set. Then start setting the time until the date clicks over to the 25th and that would be the AM already. Then set my time accordingly. If it's a PM then I would need to get it past 12 (one full rotation) then it would already be PM but still on the 25th. Hope that helps.

Service cost DM 400 in the 80ties, Euro 500 in the 90ties. Now its well abobe Euro 1K. I've stopped servicing in 2000, since then it runs perfect ard +5s/d n I let it run, until it shows a problem. Funny thing about the speed master is that it went to the moon and all and everyone thinks that means it's some kind of amazingly rugged tool watch but talk to the many who have taken a swim in a few feet of water and had it leak. And, Be careful if you go to the moon because the crystal may pop off your speed master like it did on the astronauts... and then you have to use a bulova backup

  • @OuijTube

People swimming with speed masters fundamentally misunderstand what the watch was meant to do. It was never intended to function in water-there isn’t any liquid water on the moon. NASA wanted accuracy, legibility, shock resistance, temperature resistance, and vacuum decompression. They got that (mostly). But as with all things, sometimes equipment fails, so the Bulova had to fill in in a pinch. People just got used to thinking that all expensive watches are dive watches. They aren’t. Those clowns would probably go swimming with a JLC Reverso and complain about its water resistance.

The most interesting fact in the Bulova/Omega discussion is that while it’s true that Omega got the contract for astronaut wristwatches, Bulova was the exclusive contractor with NASA for every clock and timing device in every flight vehicle from the start of the Vanguard program in 1958. The Bulova ultra high frequency quartz in the Lunar Pilot was developed for NASA in both the vehicles and back at Huston. When Commander Scott wore his Bulova on the Moon, it closed the circle on Bulova’s association with manned flight that goes all the way back to Lindbergh. In contrast, Omega has the Speedmaster, which makes for righteous bragging rights, but actually the Lunar Pilot is a far better timing device, and probably a better moonwatch than either the Speedmaster or the 1971 Bulova. The crystal sets the Lunar Pilot ahead of the Speedmaster imho. It maintains clarity for the tacymeter and the dial by protecting both from wear. The deep black of the Bulova does a better job of handling the glare of the Sun on the Moon. No matter how much moon dust is on the face shield of an astronaut’s helmet while on the lunar surface, she/he will have no trouble reading that dial.

    1. The 1861 movement in the current Moonwatch is a direct descendent of, and very similar to, the 321 Calibre from the 60’s. In fact there would be very few watches which have remained so similar both in terms of external design and movement from their predecessor of 50 years ago. 2. I would just have both as the quartz on the Bulova doesn’t bother me that much, but I just can’t get over the 52mm lug to lug size unfortunately. 3. Astronauts were notorious for making side deals with companies and trying to sell unauthorised contraband they had brought on missions with them. What are the chances that the crystal on the speedy actually failed, and this astronaut just happened to have smuggled a PROTOTYPE watch which he then used. Bulova gets priceless marketing and testing done, he gets paid and then sells his watch 50 years later for like 1.5 million . I don’t buy his bullshit for a second! :)

@@stuartcole4845 Probably some truth to that. granted the Speedmaster hesalite was known to pop out, even today you can find pictures of astronauts on the space station with scotch tape all over their Speedmaster's crystals holding them in place. Maybe he just took advantage of that known failure point to don the Bulova.

@@brandonnickerson8934 Oh I believe 100% he wore it on the moon. I’m just highly suspicious about the claim of the Speedmaster failure AND he just happened to have a prototype Lunar Pilot with him. I think Bulova set it up for the publicity and unlike the Speedmaster, he got to keep the watch which turned out being worth a fortune. All astronauts had to return their Speedmasters as they were government property. I believe the only one unaccounted for is Buzz Aldrin’s, which was the first watch worn on the moon and was subsequently “lost” after he handed it back over.

@@TheWatchChannelAU ...I was answering a message to another person's comment who asked regarding the Lunar Pilot " Who has one of these and finds themselves staring at it far too long?". Sorry I confused you man. Great video though with good points. I'm a Swiss man living in the U.S. who hopefully will visit down under sometime. Now, about this ever expanding watch collection 🤔.

90% of this video is of your face. I think you must fancy yourself a movie star or something. At any rate, I would rather have seen your watch's face instead.

Listen everyone is entitled to their opinion,But there is no way that omega is 10 times better than the Bulova as the price would suggest. I'm sure the Omega snobs will disagree but hey that what's good about people having their own opinions
