The Bulova Moonwatch Wristwatch: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Bulova Moonwatch is a fascinating watch, with an interesting backstory, a great dial, a neat quartz movement, and a reasonable price point. It's not perfect, though, as it's huge, only 5ATM Water Resistant, and poorly lumed.
So, although it's a great watch, and a great choice for many people, you've gotta know your darkness, water use, and most importantly, wrist size, before you make your own lunar journey.
Here's an Amazon Link, if you'd like to buy the watch and support the channel. Note, though, that Amazon sellers may be "Grey Market", and the manufacturer warranty may not apply: amzn.to/2n7GB3i

    You were really reaching for the negatives there. This is more like a pilot watch, it doesn't need deep diving capability. It will survive the rain which is good enough. Also comparing a $400 watch to $4000 watch is far from a fair comparison. For $400 this watch is amazing.

    I ran this watch side by side with my Omega Speedmaster for 18 months. I replaced the bracelet on both with a "Nato" strap which I prefer. The shocker? I sold the Omega & kept the the Bulova. With the money I got for the Speedmaster brought a round the world airline ticket and a couple very nice high end Taichung Spydercos. Diving the wreak of the Zenobia of Cyprus I had a brainfart and put it on my wrist instead of my Seiko dive watch. The dive was 50 minutes with the deepest part at 41 meters. The Bulova was fine (thank goodness!) I lent it to my son for 2 of his 4 tours of Afghanistan and it stood up to this very harsh environment with no problem. Its a great watch. I have the no date model which I prefer. Its on a simple 20mm black "nato" strap & I wear it daily, I don't baby it. Nice review Nick as usual.

    I just picked up this little beauty, and I have to say, it's an absolute stunner in person. It's easily my new favourite, but I'm a sucker for tool watches. Interesting history, Sapphire crystal, 262kHz ultra accurate quartz movement (precisionist). Worth the price of admission as far as I'm concerned. I'm not particularly concerned about the water resistance, I have divers for that, and there's no water on the moon!

    I looked at the Speedmaster at my dealers and frankly wasn't blown away. I was disappointed because I was looking fwd to buying one but suspected I'd regret buying it. Then, bored during the covid lockdown in March '20 I discovered the Bulova on KZread. I took a chance, found a good price with an American seller for £212 and bought one (leather strap). Very glad I did. And as for waterproof concerns...not a problem on the moon 😂

    Additional comment: I have 7.25" wrists and it fits really well. I don't like large watches and this doesn't feel like one. Mine runs dead accurate. Crystal sits proud of the bezel?...that existed in the original lunar watch, mind you a crystal that didn't fail compared to it's Speedy.

    I’ve never had a problem with this watch. The line is active enough for me to read it at 3 am, the bracelet matches the collar under the sapphire, the accuracy is unparalleled, and the size fits my 8.5” wrist perfectly. I own the strap version and the bracelet as well. Love them. UHF quartz is the bomb, the dial is simply beautiful; I use a tool watch in my job several times a day and this has never failed me. I don’t want a kinetic, I have several, I don’t want solar, I own several, I want a classic looking tool watch with history. That’s the target market I think. IMO for what it’s worth.

    Yeah I've never seen a watch that creates more unwarranted fear of wearing than this one. It's not too big! This is a watch that the more you wear the more you find it surprises you. This is a watch that the more you wear it the more it makes all your fancy automatics look like toys. The only change I would make is a 22mm lug to lug.

  • @wayneturner1336

    @@jabezhane yeah, maybe my one change too. The nato I put it on is a 20 mm but the thickness is kind of a problem. It has worn to fit it but a 22 mm lug width would definitely give you more strap options. And there are so many watches that are a 48 mm yet a 52 mm with an additional 2 mm per side seems world ending for some. I really don’t understand it. Just had my battery changes done at the 2 year mark, still love the watch!

    Nick, I rewatched this video after recently getting a hold of one of these second hand. And my experience is that it carries way smaller than its specs tell me it should. A lot more comfortable on my wrist than a lot of other similarly sized watches. Allthough I usually prefer 39/40mm

We're lucky that the Bulova name still exists and that they took the time to make a reproduction. I'm curious as to where Bulova got the specifications for manufacturing this watch. Is it in their files? I'd like to see those. Mine looks awesome on a olive NATO.

    The size and the low Water resistance are historically correct and were requirements by NASA. Visibility was a must and it needed to be permeable because the air inside would pop out the cristal in space because of the difference in presures (which happened to the Omega).

    This is a watch that really interests me ( tried a strap one recently) but all your points are valid. I've got an Omega Planet Ocean big size and that's fine, the Bulova was just too big. It appealed to me as I'm visually impaired and the dial is quite clear considering all the chrono info. The strap is also very narrow and feels a bit silly given the size of the watch. Nice to see the quartz Seamaster on your table, I have one, the most comfortable watch I've ever worn. Apparently, Citizen own Bulova, shame they couldn't put an eco drive movement in and shrink it a bit as you say. My Citizen PCAT has 200m of water resistance and that doesn't have a screw down crown, so they can do it. Great video as usual.

    Very complete, Nick. If I were to get this watch, it would be singled out because its a Moon Watch, a point you well-made. What I would use this watch for would be to time most of the events at a track meet or horse racing. Because of the pushers and the ease of movement, this seems like one of the few chronos that actually works easily. Might even be able to use it at Laguna Seca Raceway to time auto laps. Most of the mentioned racing types are timed in under and hour. AF

    A few more things: First, you hit the nail on the head. Supposedly this watch band used is actually on a different Bulova watch and they just kinda plopped it on. Another really important thing is that the lugs are different on this watch when compared to the leather variant. The metal bracelet version has the springbars located incredibly close to the case. So close that it's actually difficult to fit a nato strap through the space. I totally agree on the sweep of the seconds hand. Should definitely be the beautiful sweep on the other Precisionist watches. Even the chrono-hand isn't as smooth as their other watches - only on the return. I also think the old logo that's on the original should be on this dial as well - much like Tissot does on the Visodate, and Hamilton does on various watches. Finally, the watch is just too big. Bulova is going the Invicta route with case sizes and it's a shame. The number of comments I've seen that say they'd buy the watch if it was smaller is staggering. It would've been the perfect alternative to the Speedmaster but they missed a lot of things. It should come in a 38mm and a 40mm case. Bulova nearly hit it out of the park but ended up hitting a foul ball. Don't get me wrong, I love the watch. I've gone back and forth on it a thousand times, to the point where it was in my Cart and I was one button away from having one. But there's just too many issues with it. - One last note is that me and my brothers Bulova watches also have pretty awful lume. I've been really spoiled by my Orient USA II. Not sure if it's on the same level as a Seiko diver (my Seiko 5 has terrible lume), but it's legible at night without any issues.

I own this watch and I can see perfectly well which hand is the hour and which is the minute! I'm a small guy, but I have never ever thought about its size - it is not huge! It is truly amazing that we were ever able to survive for so many years without a micro adjusting band. :) Is this really that important these days? Only speaking for myself, of course, once I have my watch band sized, I never change it. Do other people's wrists really change that much? Micro adjust is nice, but I would never make a watch buying decision on it.

    Yes, all day long. I can rarely do leather or rubber straps because of the large variation. Even g-shocks seem to never be quite right (always too loose or too tight). One of my favorite watches has a braclet with a ratcheting clasp that I can micro adjust while on wrist. It's AMAZING. I wish more had it.

    That is, unfortunately, not an easy question to answer. The short answer is that Bulova watches are made in Hong Kong, Japan, and Switzerland. Bulova is not very transparent about where exactly some of their models are made, so one assumption could be that they are made at all three. Some of their watches are marked "Swiss made", but that can be misleading. Other KZread presenters have made excellent videos explaining how "Swiss Made" may not be the same as "Made in Switzerland" The bottom line is that Bulova makes good watches

    The Titanium Waveceptors. Particularly fond of the Casio LCW-M500TD-1AER, it's pretty much like the others but offers a matte finish and better water resistance for what looks like an extra $75 on Amazon.

    Andrew Piatek I agree if it had 300m water resistance and was plastered with lume it would be just another dive watch

  • @10secondsrule

    @10secondsrule

    Amy M well the good bright lasting lume is nice to have and in this price category I’d expect it to be better. The one they use might as well be not there. Also the quality of the watch is poor. Wobbly hands which look like have been cut out of tin can at close inspection and move when watch is shaken, wobbly buttons which sometimes fail to register. White paint on some printing like date and inside registers is very diluted and looks almost grey. I mean it’s not expensive watch but I own much better quality watches for the same price. Also the size is ridiculous. Btw I own this watch because I like the design but it could be vastly improved. Why they decided not to have a smooth large second hand running and swap it with the small 6 o’clock register I’ll never get (maybe battery saving?). This way you never see the butter smooth second hand movement (apart of when resetting the chronograph)

  • @amym6693

    @amym6693

    6 жыл бұрын

    10secondsrule the reason the second hand is small and the second hand for the chronograph is large is because the large second hand works with the tachymeter, the tachymeter scale is read from the large second hand, the numbers on the bezel are used with the large second hand to make calculations. it wouldn’t work with the small second hand because the numbers wouldn’t line up with the second hand. The chronograph buttons are over large and covered for use with gloves.. A lot of the comments about this watch seem to be complaining that it’s not a dive watch, ie not 300m water resistant, not plastered with lume, no rotating bezel, this is because it’s not a dive watch, in fact the same watch movement is available from bulova in a dive watch with much more lume, rotating bezel, rubber strap and 300m water resistance, I was initially worried that the two watches would be too similar because my bf already had the dive watch but side by side they are completely different,

    Nick, good review, but really 50 meters is not enough, have you ever or will you ever be more than 150 feet deep in water................at that point you will have more important things on your mind, such as: why didn't I wear my Omega Dive watch today? Most of your nitpicks are good but occasionally you go off the rails with comments like that...

It's big but that point, I don't know, a Dodge Ram is Huge but that's the way it's gotta be. So, if anybody wants a smaller watch just buy one. 350 or less ... extremely great looking and usable watch. Love it.
