5 Space Watches You Can Own

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today's video, I would like to explore the most accessible pieces of machinery used by astronauts - watches. These watches range from only a few hundred to a few thousand pounds but each provide an insight into an era of timepieces and the steps taken by man to conquer space.
Featured Watches:
-Seiko 6139-6002 "Pogue" (vintage)
-Bulova Lunar Pilot
-Fortis Cosmonauts
-Sinn 140 St
-Omega Speedmaster Professional/First Omega in Space

Of course, there's the ultimate low priced astronaut's watch, the Casio G-Shock, which flew on any number of shuttle missions. Check out any photo of groups of astronauts aboard the shuttles in space and you'll likely see one or two. Cheap and durable, they were perfect for the '80s and '90s. Even people like me with only a few ducats in the 'ol wallet can afford one! I'd love to be able to afford a Speedmaster, but that would likely mean surrendering a kidney, so the Bulova and my trusty G-Shock will have to do. Great video!

You seem to have overlooked the Sturmanskie piljot watches -- their Gagarin commemoratives still use the same movement as the one Gagarin (and Tereshkova) wore on their historic missions.

I totally recommend Bulova with bracelet, it's really comfortable and high quality overall. If you want to put it on nato be sure to use curved springbars or just use two tablespoons to bend thin regular 20mm springbars.

Great video! I have found, as many of us watch enthusiasts have as well, most people aren't very interested in watches in general. However, when I speak about my Bulova "moonwatch" I find people are more interested. The interest in space is almost universal and it may even bring some folks into the watch community! Keep up the good work :)

Bravo 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Armand this video is in my top 3 videos. Just pure insight and knowledge on a very niche topic. No flashy intros or useless filler, just pure class. I sold my bulova moon watch to pursue a 3572.50 speedmaster. I have to say with months of research on space watches I learned that the alternatives are quite impressive in there own right. Man that fortis is nice, might be my next watch after the speedy. Thank you Armand Btw I watched one of your older videos. I miss your old intros. Is it possible to use it when doing a retro if vintage videos please 👍🏻👍🏻

My Tissot PR 516 Chronograph had the same "caliber Lemania 873" movement as the Omega Speedmaster. The difference in price was huge in 1972! I paid DM 300.00 for my Tissot and the Omega Speedmaster was also for sale in the same store for DM 1600.00. The seller said the quality was the same, only Omega was better known. A weird world actually, but that's still the case.

The whole space watch collection idea was something I've been pondering for a while so great to see this video. Here's my thoughts .. Didn't know about the Seiko, but as the years have past it is now £600-800 now for a Pogue, and the earlier in the 70s they are the more it pushes them north of a grand on Chrono24. Never considered one, but am now, but i shall hunt down a bargain.. The Bulova is nice, but I have reservations. You cant buy an original, there is only one. Whilst this is clearly a nice and quality watch, and they did make a special 59th Anniversary edition but with a gold caseback and black dial with a gold edged bevel , but not a fan, looks cheap as hell. I really feel they should also do another commemorative version but go upmarket. Vintage look lume on the dial markers, A good mechanical movement improve the case finish and maybe shrink the case size down a little too- small wristed collectors will be crying.. The Fortis is a very nice looking watch, really feeling that Cosmonaut, clean, beautiful, But the Chrono... nah Sinn, great watch but leaves me cold. And of course, my grail watch the speedy - pref a 321.. I can dream lol Great video, learnt a lot, and have subbed as a result. Nice Job

Re-watching an old upload here... The focus of my watch buying (I don't yet consider myself a collector) has always been re-editions of tool watches with a military, space travel or otherwise very interesting history. In the years to come as I begin to specialise and become a collector, I won't be surprised if I approach collecting via 'sub-collections': and space travel watches will definitely be one such sub-collection. I already own the Bulova. An incredible piece of tech - which I only ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ appreciated after almost 6 months of ownership when daylight savings time came around. I discovered the watch had kept - literally - ᴘᴇʀғᴇᴄᴛ time. Over 2 years later, it has never failed to be accurate - to the second - during this bi-annual time change. Putting it on a dark brown Rios 1931 'Nature' strap (similar to the leather on the Sinn 140 and, if I'm not mistaken, the same brand/style as the strap on your own Seiko 55 Fathoms) really made it click aesthetically and it's been a constant leisure time companion ever since. I also have a gorgeous little Poljot Strela chronograph with a ᴠᴇʀʏ simple yet practically bullet proof 3133 mov't. It's a very underrated watch - as far as it's history goes. Yet it has a deservedly accurate reputation for, shall we say... a lack of refinement! Be that as it may, it spent a little over 12 mins in open space on Alexei Leonov's wrist in 1965 and making history as it did. Yes, the 3017 column wheel mov't may've changed to a cam actuated 3133 (...at least in the re-editions), but otherwise it's ᴇxᴀᴄᴛʟʏ the same timepiece. And that's ᴇxᴀᴄᴛʟʏ why I love it. And... I currently have my eye on an early 2000's Fortis Chronograph. It's not a Cosmonaut; the case and dial design + the mov't is exactly the same, but it has less utilitarian case finishing (i.e. more polished surfaces) and, most unfortunately, it lacks that remarkable bracelet, which I doubt I wound even use, but still... It is freshly serviced and at a ᴠᴇʀʏ reasonable price from a good seller. Obviously I could ᴇᴀsɪʟʏ fill a 6 slot watch-box with such pieces. And a four slot box could house a Seiko 'Willard', a Zodiac Sea-Wolf, a Glycine Airman and a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. That's my 'watches of the Vietnam war' sub-collection right there. And I already own 3 of the 4. That's 10 pieces. My 2020 Seiko Alpinist SPD123J (cream and gilt dial) on it's Jubilee, my 2018 Certina DS PH200M on either its mesh ᴏʀ after market single pass nylon, my Stowa Type A B-Uhr on the Rios 1931 single rivet strap and a Smiths Everest Expedition on that gorgeous riveted bracelet... Another box of 4. 14 in total. Done. Dusted. Game Over. 🙂 This is an...odd post. I must admit to an odd, almost cathartic feeling having written it. If only this hobby was this simple! I could spend the next few years picking up 5 watches and be done. Sell the rest and enjoy what I have. That's how it works in this hobby, yeah?

I am very happy with my Fortis and Sinn “space watches.” The Speedmaster has a fatal flaw for a guy with very large hands. A mechanical watch with a tiny crown and chronograph pushers in very close proximity is a daily frustration. I had to give up on that watch and trade it.

Slight correction: David Scott wore his NASA-issued Speedmaster for two of the three lunar EVAs. It is only while getting ready for the third and final EVA did the crystal pop off the Omega. Dave strapped his Bulova prototype on his wrist for the last moon walk and continued to wear it for the rest of the mission. You can see it on his wrist in photos of him in the life raft after splashdown three days later. PS. Wally Schirra pronounced his name as shi-RAW. He frequently sat next to CBS's Walter Cronkite providing color commentary for the live coverage of the moon landings. Wally himself retired after Apollo VII, having been the only astronaut to fly on Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions.

I already have a Speedy MOTM. Have thought about a Bulova, but dislike the size, and wish the UHF extended to the chrono function. I did not really know about the Pogue, and that there is 'the right stuff'. Love how the case blends turtle (cushion) and samurai (angular) cases, the current Seiko reissues that are all the rage these days. This seems like Seiko's no brainer next reissue. But I might look for a vintage one while they are still affordable.

One that has been missed is one that I have - a Fortis Black Mars Chronograph (officially issued for use on the International Space Station). But you certainly did cover Fortis. I really do like the look of those Sinns with a similar layout to the Lemania 5150 as per your excellent Omega Mark series videos. I regret selling my Fortis and will get another, together with a Bullova. I has a Speedmaster but found it so inaccurate it was all but use for work.

I had a Seiko watch that was inaccurate by 2+/- mins/mo. I always thought they would be as accurate as a Bulova 10+/- sec/yr

I could say for the money the Bulova is the real winner here however I also think it is the best regardless of price.

Thanks for the interesting video. It reinforced some recent thoughts I've had about watches in space. I re-watched the film Apollo 13 lately. The scene where they are timing the improvised fuel burn to return home caught my attention. Using a watch to call out the time, I wondered what watch was used (assuming the film was fairly accurate about this event). Was he using the Omega? Another thought I had was how the oscillator (hair spring) functions differently in the absence of gravity. Do they take that into account in adjusting the watch on earth prior to flight? Many questions pop up I suppose, interesting area of time pieces.

Michael Dietsche my guess is that the hair spring, which is on one plane in a normal watch, would react in zero gravity the same way a tourbillion encased hairspring (in multiple planes/positions,) does in gravity. I.e. better in all positions.

Armand you are making an error in your Seiko reference 6139-6005 is correct. Reference Spencer Klein who is an expert on these watches.

Curious about how a Tourbillon would do in space - seems like a 'weightless design'. "(from wikipedia) a tourbillon aims to counter the effects of gravity by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, to negate the effect of gravity.. By continuously rotating the entire balance wheel/escapement assembly at a slow rate (typically about one revolution per minute), the tourbillon averages out positional errors."

A tourbillon doesn't do much anyway if you are actually wearing the watch. It was originally developed for pocket watches which sit all day in the same orientation.

Not too bad, but what makes this watch look out of proportion is that ridiculously small 20mm lug width. You need at least a 21, preferably a 22 on a face this size. I returned mine because of this.
