Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this month's #WatchTalk episode, I'm joined once again by my good friend and watch industry expert Marc from Long Island Watch.
We discuss watches you (and we) love to hate, the controversy around them, and why some brands are so loathed. We also examine why we dislike certain watches, along with an in-depth look at some of the worst aspects of watch journalism in this social media age.

TGV you really hit the nail on the head with your comment about how smartwatches have a built-in obsolescence. Without a constant connection to a phone or computer to update their firmware, sync your settings, receive new patches, etc., it becomes useless. The whole reason we love watches is that they're a tool which gives us independence with no strings attached. The way a tool should be.

Yeah I'm a total tech head... I love it all. I've built PCs for years and love to tinker. Yet I have no interest in wearing a smart watch. I have enough tech saturation in my life that I just don't want to wear it on me as well. I love having something analogue in my life. I do have a Garmin Fenix which only goes on my wrist when hiking (helps as backup navigation), running and cycling. A 'proper' watch goes right back on my wrist when I'm done. I appreciate what the Garmin can do for me, but there's no emotional connection to it, and I certainly don't feel compelled to keep looking down at my wrist like I do when admiring other watches I own and love.

@@gavanmitchell9095 Same here, I work at a small IT company and I’m the only guy who wears a mechanical watch. The point about fashion watches being a gateway to watch collecting is how I started collecting. A few years ago I walked into a shoe store and saw a watch on a leather strap that came with two alternate straps for less than a $100 and thought it was an absolute steal. I wore that watch everyday and eventually bought a few more fashion watches of a similar caliber. At the end of the day I’m thankful for my first fashion watch since it eventually led me here.

But I couldn’t (and still cannot) afford one so I got ones I could. It’s only now that I can begin to buy watches that I would like. My first was an skx009J and I love it. I’m looking at the Hamilton Khaki next :) I have a couple of fashion watches, as I’ve learnt more I won’t be bothering again but they’ve brought me joy along the way

Affiliate links are fine IMO, it's only pennies in terms of revenue, so it can't really impact a reviewers opinion. But again, it's up to the quality of the reviewer. I find it more useful to have them then not as I get dozens of questions daily like: "where is a safe place to buy" whatever watch in question, so it's more about trying to help people find a safe and secure place to buy rather than making money. Great question, thank you and I hope that makes sense. Best regards, TGV

I'd never even heard of Hublot until I saw that they were sponsoring Johann Zarco in MotoGP in 2020. Shows what I know. "Definitely a Marmite watch" - I'd have to agree with that sentence. When I looked at Hublot's website, I didn't see anything there that caught my imagination. I'm not knocking their overall quality or anything, I'm simply saying that I found their style to be a bit... brutalistic? It's hard for me to envision the designs enduring time very well. They leave me feeling that Hublot's primary goal was to be different, with long-lasting style not being a consideration. Just one man's opinion.

It’s always such a treat to see these two gents discuss watches. I’ve owned several smart watches and I can’t seem to feel a connection to them. 9/10 times when I leave for work in the morning I’ll have on a traditional mechanical watch. Interesting that you discussed marrying a smart watch and traditional watch. I recently saw a friend with a Movado connect 2.0 which is essentially a smart watch made to look like a traditional watch. I find it very interesting that Movado being a fashion watch now a days is trying to capture a buyer that likes the look of a traditional watch, with the benefits of a smart watch.

Great video as always. Have to admit I hate the term "entry level" when it comes to watches. You can have many watches be they affordable/expensive or just one and be as much of enthusiast as the next person. Some people do naturally gravitate to higher price piece's, but you don't necessarily have to. Enthusiasm for watches has nothing to do with affordability. Yet many people seem to think it has. That's my personal pet hate. Look forward to the next Collab between you two 👍

I enjoy watching you guys so much! There’s so much passion, enjoyment and also humour in your interactions. I love watching when one surprises the other with his watch choices and stories behind them. Oh, and my least favourite watch brand, since you asked, would be Vincero, since this was the brand that marketed me into buying their $10 watch for $250. But it could be any other fashion watch brand that I would just have stumbled upon, like Vincero. There was a good side to it too though, as I became a watch enthusiast since and started my own little watch collection consisting of 2 Longines (Master Moonphase and Conquest Heritage 35mm) and a Tudor Black Bay Red by now. It wouldn’t have happened if not for Vincero in a way. So I guess we are all bound to make mistakes on our way in this hobby, especially at the beginning. First off, great show, I follow you both. I think my most hated watch is Rolex. Not because it is a bad watch by no means. I hate that when the average person is talking to a watch enthusiast the first thing they always ask is do you have a Rolex? There are so many great brands equal to or better than Rolex even with a long history. But, that is the only brand that the average person knows. I'm asked a lot of times what a grail watch is for me and I say Omega, AP, Oris, and others, and the person just looks at me oblivious to what they are. Rolex is a great watch but it's not the only watch out there.

I enjoy smart watches along with the more traditional watches, but the one thing I do loathe is that bit of planned obsolescence. I actually like smart watches because I can then leave my phone at home, and still be connected.

Amazing guys... this episode has been really really amazing. When you both talked about the Smart-watches, the idea is that we all are loosing privacy, independence, initiative, we are really entrepreuners on nothing. For that reason I miss those decades where my dad was raised, obviously with less high-tech and medicine advances, but he could flauvoured his freedom with his Swiss automatic Invicta in his wrist while he drove his Volvo 144. In fact, he could start an small company of 80 people working with him... without any computer help!, and last 25 years... what a paradox, where the majority of us are being conducted. Mark was true in the same sense when he said "I like my Garmin as I went running this morning but it hasn't no external connection deployment. I just monitorize my running sesion when I arrive in my computer". I love my Casios, I just have vintage ones: anadigi, G-shock, Solar Tough, quartz analogical, I feel they are all made to help you, giving you some of them a lot of different functions for almost nothing of money, "only to you" they respect the compromise of ones integrity, helping you to make you better, helping you to make you free, helping you to make you independent... for almost nothing of money. Same for mechanical watches but with more solid reasons because a good designed/manufactured mechanical watch you loved instantly and then you purchased -doesn't matter if we are talking about a 100$ or 40.000$- is a reflect of you as well, and this little piece of mechanical ingeniery is helping you too as I have mentioned before. Are like vessels from a distant port, that don't exist any more, but they are still arriving being a remain of a good time. Well, sorry for all this "brick" guys! Saludos!

I think that transition to hybrid smart/traditional watches is already underway, although in smaller bumps and steps. I think back in 2009 JLC made a mechanical watch with an integrated fob in partnership with Aston Martin, Sinn is banking on a strap system that lets you wear a Smartwatch and a regular watch on the same wrist and TAG Heuer already has a dedicated line of smartwatches with high-grade cases and materials.

I hope you commit to doing these joint shows regularly. Honesty is a rarity these days and I love the candor with which TGV and Marc discuss some industry-related issues. And I agree, reviewers should not accept free watches or anything else for that matter. And if they do, they must tell you that up-front.

The Nic Cage watch.... That's some pimp stuff right there! I remember some 10+ years back when we still had TV magazines to check what to watch in the coming weeks we had Mr. Cage on the cover rocking the Leopard. Regarding smartwatches, I do double wrist. I was the same as you guys, thinking smartwatches are soulless and don’t look good and preferred to wear traditional watches. However, when I was gifted one and started using it, there are certain things that I do like about a smartwatch. To me, the smartwatch is more functional than anything whereas my “traditional” watches are more of a romance. I find the fitness tracking, weather info, virtual assistance pretty cool and handy. So now I’ve gotten used to wearing two watches, although it was a bit awkward in the beginning and especially when I want to stay low-key with wearing an understated watch, a smartwatch on the other wrist just makes it feels overdone.

Good to see you guys together for a new video. Hello from Istanbul on a sunny Saturday morning! Love your comments about Made in China. I will be honest. I got two....out of 15 watches I own. The story. I tried to buy a perfect condition 2nd Gen Seiko Monster. I found €500 for a beaten up one, €1,420 for a pristine one. Just too much. I bought a Chinese Heimdallr Monster homage with a red dial as I didn't want it look so much like a copy orange dial, Seiko never made a red one. Great build, 316l ss, NH36A, sapphire crystal, excellent solid link bracelet, +7 spd, great bezel, lume that lasts all night, It's perfect. One of my favourites. I also got an NH35 based pilot style watch because I wasn't sure if I liked this type of watch so it was meant as a temporary tryout watch. It's so good I just kept it. But there is a lot of rubbish there too, so you have got to be discerning, get to know the makers, the movements, the customer reviews etc. I'll still buy a non Chinese watch first, but if I can't get what I want, or the price is overinflated, why not. Then of course there is the iconic Seagull, which I don't have but will be my 3rd Chinese watch!

I wholeheartedly agree with your views, when you were talking about Hublot. We have no right to judge other peoples' tastes and as such companies that cater to those tastes. I'd never buy a Hublot, but I truly love the Freak... Go figure.. What really gets under my skin is companies that, to me, mess with the fabric of the space they are in. For example Apple, who shot to the top because of their innovative products that married cutting edge functionality with the notion that a tech nerd sort of device can be a mainstream object of desire and a show of wealth. There were expensive consumer electronics way before Apple, but they made them mainstream "cool". Then they lost their way, only focusing on cool and not much else. For watches (you might have guessed) for me this is Rolex. They make a great product no one can deny that, but their use of artificial scarcity and brand value to inflate prices is harming the watchmaking industry, of course in my very humble opinion. To the point that although I would love to own a blue dial OP, I would never ever buy one, as that would be supporting a practice I believe is hurting this wonderful space that it occupies. The examples could be multiplied a thousand fold as unfortunately current trends are towards consumerism and planned obsolescence, and companies of course are catering to consumer trends (and their own profitability). In a world where a diamond, as beautiful as it looks is worth so much money because it represents wealth, I despair about the future of all our hobbies and enthusiast niches. Sorry about the rant :) If anyone's come this far, goes without saying I love both TGV and Mark, you guys could talk about the weather for an hour and I'd still watch. Keep doing what you're doing boys!

Anyway, I am 52 years old and this is a paradigm that is at least as old as me. When I was a kid, there was Disco for the masses...but WPLJ for we purists (dated reference, I moved away from New York in 1980). On TV, you had Travis who wanted the station to play the Top 40, but "Johnny Fever" and "Venus Flytrap" were the purists who would have none of it. Moving on to my teenage years in North Carolina, you had Flock of Seagulls and Duran Duran for the masses, and then Guns n Roses and Pink Floyd for we purists. And this dichotomy remains as an adult in the watch community. You have all of those pitch men who "cut out the middle man" for the masses...real brands and youtube guys who refuse to take sponsorships for we purists. You guys are the Venus Flytrap and Johnny Fever of our market segment. Keep doing it the way you do it!

Great chat, guys! Frederique Constant and Alpina have some "horological smart watches" (they sometimes call them HSM), combining a quartz movement and a smartwatch module. A few models have a digital display for minimal info (some obvious and sporty - Alpina, some discrete and elegant, behind the dial - Frederique Constant), but some only have analog dials + a connection to your smartphone. I believe they were the first to do that (years ago) and they made it work. They even included a "touch" function on the crystal for some newer models! Anyway, I believe more than one model could join any "classic" watch collection for the occasional connected wrist time :). They also have (for many years now) another smart gadget - a smart strap. Which is actually a tiny module attached to a classic strap (theirs or any). When on the wrist, it's basically invisible on the bottom side of the wrist, tucked under the leather strap. Comfortable and practical, with enough useful info. And the app is decent, too. I used both a HSM and a smart strap from Alpina.

Smart watches are OK as a consumable item but I prefer to be able to glance at the machine on my wrist that has a beating heart (mechanical or quartz, I don't care) without having to twitch my arm in a fashion that I require urgent medical treatment just to find out the battery is dead. Just a question, you mentioned that you do not critique a watch until you've handled it personally, however you also mentioned that you haven't handled MVMT/DW/Vincero watches, how would you know that they're not as good as what they are charging for? Why do watch communities dismiss them so much (other than their prices)? Not here to instigate an argument, but would really love a clear explanation, thanks!

Finally got to sit down and watch this. Writing my comments as I watch with my son. Grumman most definitely is known for the Tomcat, but were prolific in WWII and Korean conflict from which most of the Lunar Module engineers were recruited. The US Navy now utilizes Lockheed Martin F/A-18 Super Hornets at US Navy Strike Fighter Weapons School (TopGun). The Damasko looks super sweet, Marc! Loving the Dr No sub....still waiting to get mine done...definitely a inspiration. I had never heard of the Freak and truly enjoyed learning about that....22k is not horrendous BUT definitely insures exclusivity. CANT HOMAGE THAT! The two mugs....TGV....I almost lost my coffee...Wow! Hublonium?.....no..just no. Vincero 😤🤢 Leopard Daytona...bad then...bad now Smart watches become they become obsolete quickly but I mostly dislike them because they are interconnected social communication devices. A watch is a stand alone tool. A smart watch stops being useful if the inter webs are available. A wrist watch needs nothing but me. Most loathed watch.....Fakes (love well made homages ....hate blatant explicit fakes) smart watches and fashion watches, lastly watches worn by people who just want to look down at others but who know nothing about their watches....only want it because they have FOMO or are just showing off Great job guys. Thank you so much. Onward and upward!

As for me it's the smartwatch that got me started to learn and love about traditional watches. For example, I downloaded a watchface that has a tourbillon, and then it got me curious about what a tourbillon is and started to find videos about watch with tourbillon, or how does it work, etc. It's not all that bad. Now I have some idea of what kind of watches that I like (Like Hamilton, Junghans), and I have a list of watches to get later.

I'm sure you don't want to go around naming names, but there's a fairly popular chap from Sydney, Australia who constantly rips into watches that have been gifted to him. I know he's mentioned it before but he makes it very clear to the companies he deals with that he's going to say what he really thinks. There's always outliers though... Exceptions to the rule. I would have to say my biggest gripe in the watch world is Rolex business practices. Not necessarily their watches. Like you I adore the Explorer.

On smartwatches: I'm an early adopter, in fact as one of the original backers of Pebble's first Kickstarter campaign It's possible I wore a smartwatch even before the term was invented. The Pebble was the first in a succession of cutting edge wrist tech, such as the first round smartwatch (LG), the first smartwatch with a SIM and a camera (Ornate) and so on. They were cool as hell for a techie like me and getting messages or changing audio tracks or even displaying a roadmap without using my phone was very satisfying at first. And then I realized that what used to be a cool gadget became something I loathed. My free time is for me the most precious resource I have and with a smartwatch on my wrist, well ...I simply didn't have any left to enjoy. The constant intrusions of messages and e-mails became too much and I decided to simplify my life by getting rid of intrusive technology and going back to basic, which considering that my firs new non-smartwatch watch was a DW-5600 which I still wear at least once a week, couldn't be more basic than that. Since then I relearned the art of giving respect to time by wearing a proper watch. I don't hate smartwatches because they are incomprehensible, ugly, hard to use, a PC or a disposable tech. I hate them because they deprived me of my right to be alone when I want it.
