In this video, we’ll take an objective look at some luxury watch brands out there in the industry that tend to get more hate from enthusiasts than other brands. The point of a video like this isn’t to dunk on brands, but rather to provide a case study of the type of brand and consumer behavior that creates this type of climate around certain watchmakers. Do you agree with my takes? How do you feel about these brands?

I appreciate Rolex for what it used to be in the 1990s when I first got mine: a tough, well made, accurate and reliable tool watch that had a bit of status, but nothing too flashy. Just simple, understated quality. That you could go into any jeweller in New York, Copenhagen, London, Sydney or Hong Kong and get - at worst - at retail and quite likely a 20% discount. But a combination of brilliant Rolex marketing, increasing wealth throughout the world and clearly not too great increase in Rolex production numbers has seen us land where we have been for the past ~15 years...

Buying a Hublot with a $200 movement inside is like buying a Lamborghini with a Toyota Corolla engine in it. You're insane and a fool if you spend your money that way, regardless of how much you have.
I really enjoy that Teddy spends time on these subjects and not just the latest hot movements - it really is food for thought and I love it thank you Teddy!

The issue with Shinola is that it was affordable. Most people who live and work in Detroit could not afford anything they offer other than maybe the leather baseball. They should have an affordable brand that the working person can afford., Shinola meant quality and affordability back in the day. Today it represents the gentrifier, the outsider and developer who doesn’t live in the city but exploits it.

About Rolex and innovation I would say what I saw on other leading brands in other segments. They usually fail when trying to innovate because of their own huge heritage. It is not they do things wrong. Customers expect from them exactly what they do like a Fender stratocaster or a Rolex daytona. Love your content by the way Teddy. Great job.
Fun video and very insightful. Love!
I pretty much agree with all you points. Great video as always
Beautiful video. thank you for this.
You could’ve called it “when marketing ruins a brand”. All three brands with a perception problem put all their eggs in the marketing basket. Hublot did it too early, Panerai reach it’s pinacle and fell down to earth unable to get past the image and Rolex is up in the high atmosphere waiting for the fall (gonna make the biggest crater when it hits the ground). All three brands attract customers with socially unsavory traits. It’s very hard to escape that trap after you fall into it.

Mate you’ve no clue what you’re talking about.. Rolex made and continue to make some of the most collectible and sought after pieces that attract the most established of watch collectors out there… just look at how much some of the vintage models fetch at watch auctions. I'm the proud owner of the INVICTA Pro Diver. It is in my regular wrist time rotation. Even as "cheesy" as it is, I love it.
I picked up two Shinola watches, one for me and one for the Mrs, over 5 years ago. They were in a Nordstrom Rack store and I talked the guy into selling both to me for $300. Sticker price for these two quartz watches was over $800 at the time. We really like them, mine is a PVD squared face, and works great. I would look at places like that as you can often find them reduced in price.
Brilliantly researched as ever.
Excellent video, thanks
Always interesting 👏👏👏
Thanks so much! With Panerai, going down to very small amounts of WR on what are essentially iconic dive watch designs on some models, and generally what seem like cost-cutting measures, while having a watch priced well above the Omega range, is one that's turned me off. With Rolex, yeah, everything you already said, and just what flex culture has done with Rolex, and how Rolex has *handled* their well-earned success with what feels like less than, well, class, and honesty...as much respect as I've had for Rolex historically, and as much as I love some of their watches, for now, they've really soured on me.
I love my Shinola Runwell. It looks great and runs well :) I'm from Michigan and appreciate that they employ something like 400 people in Detroit regardless of what their marketing issues may have been. Also they have a couple of outlet stores where you can find some great values. I'm sure someone will have a problem with that, but it is one way to cater to the more price conscious and get good watches onto more wrists.

Hi Teddy I really like your videos because you share your perspective instead of just stating the specs. Can you please do a video to discuss the popularity of Rolex and the hype that is causing an increase in watch robberies across the US, especially in California? I feel like many people work hard to own a Rolex but then realized how dangerous it is to wear them in public. The watch then just gets stored to keep safe. What are your thoughts about wearing luxury watch in public in the current climate? I know many people who owns a Rolex but won't wear them because of fear for their safety. Thanks
For the same reasons people hate Hublot, they should also hate Richard Mille.
Teddy, Love the vid mate. What watch do you have on your wrist in this video?
Well done Teddy - balanced and delivered with reason.
Lots of pro golfers have watch deals and the two that Hublot endorses (Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed) both bolted to the Liv Tour. I feel like that's very on brand.
I agree with most of the points Teddy mentioned on why some people love to hate on Rolex but here’s my take on it: 1- Frustration from not being able to get a Rolex at retail within a short period of time. This then turns into bitterness towards Rolex, and jealousy from those who were able to buy one. 2- People being fed up with whole flexing and hype culture, and speculators who only care about investment value . Rolex is not the only brand that suffer from this, PP and AP are in this camp as well. But because Rolex watches represent over 90% of the above, they get the most hate. 3- Childish fanboys of other watch brands that envy the success and hype surrounding Rolex. So they click on every article or video that has “Rolex” in it’s thumbnail and start spewing hatred in the comments section. Some Omega and GS fanboys are particularly guilty of that. Other examples of this childish fanboyism are Apple vs Android and Playstation vs Xbox. 4- The too cool for school/indie type of people who like to be different and therefore hate anything mainstream. Rolex will probably be their main target for hating. On the other, you’ll rarely find an established and long term watch collector/lover who doesn’t admire and respect the history, achievements and success of Rolex.
We need more videos/ places where we can talk about things we don't like in watches but in a constructive way. Being overly positive all the time is maddening. I was in a stream last night dedicated to that, on purpose, as an objection to toxic positivity. That's a new phrase for me but the concept really hits the nail on the head, especially in these times. We're people, we have opinions and some are negative. I see no reason why we can't share them too, if done respectfully.
Excellent video!
Thanks Teddy!

I’ve had a panerai 1940 for about 8years, love the design, movement is nothing special and you could get it in 43mm, which I did. Now they do a great looking green dial but not in a “smaller” case, then I saw their prices! Wow almost double what I paid. So I won’t be swopping. They’d sell more by offering 40-42mm cases across different models but the price would need to be realistic too.

The role of marketing in attracting customers that give a brand its image can’t be underestimated. The brand ambassadors are less significant than the impression that existing customers might have other potential customers. How some watch enthusiasts will always say seeing a Rolex on someone’s wrist is not a sign that wearer isn’t a fellow watch enthusiast. Same for Hubot, footballers people with more money than knowledge. Panerai, muscle men of the 90s making superhero movies with out the costumes.
Shinola can be found in department stores outside the US. Was just in Hamburg and the store had a big Shinola display.
Hublot, imo, makes nice watches, but they are just way, way overpriced. I think if they were priced near Rolex (retail) / Omega, they'd be quite well liked.

I dislike Rolex for the very misleading marketing claims they've made over the years, we made the first waterproof watch, no you didn't, we created the first automatic movement, no you didn't, each watch takes a year to make, no they don't, I could go on and on. Let's not forget Rolex never made a single watch, just assembling third party parts until they bought these sub contractors.
Agreed with this segment. I'll stick with my Hamiltons, Seikos, and Glycine brand collections. They don't cost much, but make a great product.. However, I do see a Fortis, Brew, and Dan Henry watch coming soon. When I retire from the military, I will get a Grand Seiko. 🤙
Completely agree with the fourth point of why people dislike Rolex. Sure, Rolex sells a ton of watches right now, but what about 10 or 30 years from now? There might be a point where people grow tired of the models. Pattek knew this and made the decision the discontinue the Nautilus, before the bubble bursted
My first automatic watch was a preowned Hublot Big Bang 311.ci.1170.ci. I’m local if you want to do a review on it Teddy
The problem that I have with Rolex is that repairs almost have to be performed by one of its authorized servicing centers because of its strict control over parts availability, and when repairs are performed they will not return the replaced parts and insist that the parts be "traded in."
@garyboyle695
Жыл бұрын
They will also probably replace parts that don't need replacing like the hands and dial if the lume is gone, rather than just re-lumbing it. Then polish it so it looks like new. Losing any patena that made the watch unique to you.

I was looking to buy a 126330/blue/oyster steel. I first wanted to get from AD, after talking to a few AD. I gave up bc 1. The nearest AD is in St Louis which is 2 1/2 drive one way. After talking to them, they kindly refused to sit down with me to talk about getting a watch. They said I have to buy from AD from my state,in Louisville, which is 3 plus hours driving. I honestly don't know enough about any particular watch brand to hate any of them. Other than the brands i see celebrities wear of which James Bond be the most familiar in my mind with Omega, i can't honestly list a watch brand that's not tied to some famous celebrity. Thus i can't say i know any other really and can't hate on any. Barely own two watches for under $150 and at least their time keeping seems accurate. Just here to learn a thing or two to help me understand an accessory piece I should at least know more about.
Panaristi is already plural. No need to pluralize again. Sorry to nitpick, but those are great points why people stray from the brand.
Rolex : no Panerai : no comment Hublot : ask Richard Mille
I think all the hate on Shinola is misplaced- they were essentially a micro brand originally when they began selling the quartz watches. Today they offer a wider range of automatic options. I also think their pricing is reasonable for what they offer (similar to some of Longines lower priced offerings). I think the problem is with people that don’t appreciate the Detroit tie in. If Detroit assembly is important to you, Shinola makes sense. If it isn’t, Shinola does not. I am from Michigan and I feel it’s fair to say that Shinola has become the go to entry luxury brand for the upper-middle class working professional. I often see Shinola watches on the wrists of local doctors, university professors, and mid-level managers.
Such a different sort of hate. I don't respect Hublot as a watchmaker, but I do respect Rolex to a massive degree. How can you not? They have done so much for the industry. I do, however, hate everything that surrounds the brand. The product shortage, the ADs, the inflated prices, the aura of the brand, the followers of the brand (e.g., r/Rolex), etc. This is a brand that seems to bring out the worst in watch buying.
I own three Shinolas. I almost owned a fourth, but returned it due to lack of QC. Here's my beef: I purchased a Black Blizzard which came with a black bezel and numbered in white. Within a few months of daily wear the numbers were rubbing off, and had rubbed off completely within 6 months. I have an office job. I'm not banging my knuckles every day. On the other hand, my Smokey Bear and White Hurricane are great watches. I sent back the Forged Carbon Monster in February this year because it looked like a return (the box had a graphic torn off, the watch was crookedly jammed in the presentation box, the strap looked like it had been worn). I love the story of providing jobs and training to Detroit workers, but I no longer have confidence they are providing quality, so much so that I started looking to see whether the company had been purchased or had a management change.
TY,,,,,,WOW incredible very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.
Are you wearing a tudor black bay in this video?
Surprised Tag Heuer wasn't mentioned. They get a ton of hate on KZread, social media and watch forums.

I'm buying a phone soon Teddy, for my new job. ...best knowledge and review on the net. Loved the Watchfinder and Co interview ..the best two on the net for me. that kid has such a great way with words ...very eloquent in his descriptions. Big love and thank you again.
True, over-marketing can and is usually a bad thing.
I want to like Shinola so bad but I read a comment someone wrote about them a while back that I just can’t get out of my head that said “Shinola makes some of the best $200 watches out there; they just don’t cost $200” 😂 I do like their new divers though, i’ll wait to see what the consensus of them is.
Rolex is arguably the same quality as Omega, but gets a lot of hate because it rides on brand power and elitist showmanship to justify the great price difference. The fact that availability is lousy and people get miffed over the endless waiting lists and mediocre AD experience definitely adds to gas to the fire.
I really hope this comment doesn’t come across as me telling you how to run your channel, but I’d love to see you mention in the bio which watch you’re wearing for the vid. Whatever you have on now looks awesome (too much of a noob to recognize).
8:26 Rolex "Daytona": Let me market it with Abu Dhabi circuit. LOL
Rolex makes 1,000,000 watches a year, yet none are getting to ADs. Something is rotten in Denmark….or Switzerland I should say.
Can you make a video about invicta watches
What will be the future of hologram or nft watch 🤩 .... plz share it ... I see futuristic shape changing 3d watch on "3dtime" collection of Opensea ...
Rolex takes the approach of Porsche with the 911, evolution instead of revolution, refine and polish what people already like, if it’s done correctly it just works…

Are you sure that’s an appropriate comparison ? A 992 GT3 for exemple is order of magnitude better than say a 997, in a relatively short amount of time. Can you say the same for any Rolex model ?

When I was a kid in the 50’s - 60’s in Cleveland, OH, a popular saying back then was “You don’t know sh*t from Shinola.” So, because of this association I could never own a Shinola watch.
My 2 Shinola watches were $170USD for a Detrola and $266 USD for a Runwell. I am uncertain why price would be an objection as their third tier of hate, but maybe few people shop as smartly as I do. Still, regardless of your feelings about marketing and patriotism, as a former Detroit resident I am very happy to have these two watches in my collection. If you want a watch to hate based on price, look no further than an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, which is manual wind well over $10k CAD where I now live and needs a $600 service roughly every 48 months unless you don’t care what time it is.
You forgot that Hublot charges Rolex prices for off the shelf ETA movements
