I think I am about to receive some hate but I can't stand Seiko or Casio. I use to like Casio before the world of watches opened up to me. They do keep good time and Casio is very durable but despite them being well made, they look and often feel cheap and ugly (my opinion). My first bought watch was a Casio. I loved it at the time until I realized how very easily the watch got scratched. I expected much more for a $100 watch. I have a $60 Invicta that is more than twice the watch my Casio was. I'm not a big Invicta fan but if you know how to buy them, they are excellent quality for the price.

Watches with backlighting meant for pilots’ heads up display. Altitude/temperature/barometer/compass readings. Watches targeted for airline pilots, general aviation pilots, military, cargo, sport, sea planes, bush pilots, rotary. I know teddy would have more ideas than mine. Because there are so many so called “pilot watches” and yet they are only connected by heritage through an achievement set decades ago by the aviation pioneers. How about the benefits to modern pilots? Enjoy the research teddy and thank you!

I have thought about making a video, specifically for GMT's about this very subject because I have not seen one video that accurately describes this. I work in an aircrew field and from what I have seen the Tudor GMT is best suited for this because the bezel moves in half hour increments. Where this really comes into play is if you have friends in the military, specifically Afghanistan. Since they are in between time zones they do a half hour difference, 4 1/2 hours plus UTC time. Set the GMT hand to UTC and the hour to local time, use the bezel to calculate where you are going or track another time zone, so you can figure out what to set the local time to or plan out what time you expect to land for flight planning.

Very good idea. There is a mystique to pilot's watches and some people believe that some of the qualities of the target customer will be transferred to them, and I suppose that also applies to divers and racing watches too. However, the adverts for Breitling, Bell and Ross, Sinn etc are all very emotive, but I remember seeing a Bell and Ross advert with a fighter pilot, a diver, and am EOD operator in Watches of Switzerland and laughing. The chap in the store asked what was so funny, and told him that firstly Ive been an EOD operator for over ten years and the only watch issued was the standard CWC G10 watch. Secondly, you cant read a watch in a bomb suit.

In Movado’s defense, the museum dial is what brought them into the mass market. So why not run with a design that is continuously profitable? Vintage Movado is incredible, but they are known for the Museum. Their clientele appreciates the jewelry aspect of watches, which is why they’ve established a fashion brand division like Fossil. Can’t blame them for going where the money is.

Back when I was around 13 years old, I would save up every penny and "collect" watches from generic/fashion brands, such as Fossil, Guess, Casio etc. One watch I bought on a family vacation abroad was a Movado Museum. Few years ago it stopped working. I know a lot of watch enthusiasts hate it, but today after 10 years, I got it out of the closet and got it repaired. It is not so much a collectors watch, but my soul still lights up when I look at it today and I would definitely still proudly wear it as a dress watch. I guess, because it brings me back to that childhood... who knows. All in all, thanks for this video Teddy. In addition to this I am relatively blissfully unaware of their bad reputation as I am a UK buyer :-) Oh, and my one didn't have the ubiquitous MSRP price tag woven onto it.

Agreed I had started with Invicta , fell into the marketing trap. I started learning more (partly from this channel) and my tastes have changed, I will say my Invicta Grand Diver i do enjoy, but the rest ( of my Invicta collection) I'm looking to give away as gifts. I gladly ordered a Ball Hydrocarbon to start a proper collection.

My Invicta Pro Diver was my first automatic and was what got me "into" watches. Before I used to wear a handful of Michael Kors/Fossil in generally clean styles (and always got them at discount pricing). And I will still defend those early purchases. Like Teddy said, as long as people aren't buying these entry level/budget watches for their overinflated MSRP, they can be great value. It may be cheesy but I'll keep them for the long haul even as I buy nicer watches to look back on how I've evolved.

My collection of watches currently are mostly Fossils (gifted to me). They have great looking watches and the finishes are excellent. My favorite is a gunmetal chronograph my wife (then girlfriend) gifted me on our first Valentine's Day. Over a decade later and it's still running strong and accurate (quartz). My second favorite is a racing inspired Mechaquartz (quartz movement, automatic chronograph) which is a stunnerwith a bull-nose case. I think they can be a good gateway to the watch world (unlike a lot of the fashion watches I bought in my youth, but I never payed more than $20 for those watches and still got 5+ years out of them). I do love every single watch I have and rotate through them quite frequently. I share the same sentiment in keeping those but am eager to buy some quality time pieces with horological significance.

Great video! Tactful comments regarding commonly Love/Hated brands are ALL on point from the watch Enthusiast Community's Perspective. I like the history of Invicta and Movado and wish they would return to the core ideals they have apparently sold out to marketing at the expense of their once esteemed reputation. Instead of MSRP hike the brands value, they should focus on being a cost effective brand and realistically price the watches with actual supply/demand on line numbers. They are not fooling the masses.... Many videos share these same sentiments as are spoken of here and elsewhere by this video and comments section.

Movado is slightly different. Their Museum watch design is the icon itself. It was never ever about the movement or horology in a traditional sense. It was a true testament of minimalism and industrial design which was philosophically different than traditional Swiss watchmaking ideas. The Museum watch made a significant contribution to design in horology when it was introduced back in 1947. Anyone that doesn't recognize this doesn't know watches.

This was a fun and interesting video. I've never really thought about 'hating' a watch brand. I've disliked individual watches, but never a brand. I actually bought an Invicta Pro Diver in the 1990s - and still have it - with an ETA 2824 movement. Watch still runs and keeps time well. I also recently bought a Glycine off the Invicta site due to the 20% discount. I agree that the current Invictas are not to my taste - but I have several wannabe rapper types (50+ year old wannabes) that simply love them. It's always been an aspect of watches that I love - you find something to suit YOUR style. AP watches are highly respected, but are clearly not my style. Thanks for sharing this seemingly controversial topic.

I'm in my early 30s and I have an Omega Speedy and Grand Seiko Snowflake. I also have a Invicta 12878 Limited Edition Subaqua #61 of 500. It's "Swiss Made" with an ETA A07.171 Valgranges movement, one of the first watches I found with that movement when the Valgranges was released, five years ago when ETA still sold their movements to those outside of the Swatch Group. The Valgranges line didn't really take off until A08 series, when Swatch Group brands like Longines moved many of their models over to the Valgranges movements, but the A07 I feel was a milestone in ETA's history. It's big, heavy, gaudy, but I like it.

The Movado has been my most complimented watch and is still going to this day. I don’t even get that many compliments on my Omega Seamaster. I think Movado is overpriced after doing research and realizing it has a cheap quartz movement. Although I bough mine on close out at 75% off retail price and at that price it was a good watch.

I think you were spot on with DW and MVMT. They are constantly marketing themselves on FB. Being from a Chinese hertage background and a Common Wealth citizen, I've always been skeptical of anything made in China for quality purposes. With Movado, their vintage watches are beautiful and usually retail here in the UK between £700- £1800 if serviced and have a warranty. I think it is ashame that Movado is almost copying DW and MVMT these days. I actually do have an Invicta watch among my collection. It's the S1 Diablo Gun metal rally watch. It was given to me by my mother this year for my birthday. TBH, it was probably this Invicta watch that got me into researching horology and the history of various brands. It also made me more aware of the techicality of claiming "Swiss- Made" and marketing of Invicta. The Invicta watch serves me of a beater watch than anything else and is fun to wear on occassions e.g driving. I suppose in a way, I got into watches the same you did as you also got sucked in by these fashion brands. To properly to get into horology, I think you need to go through a 'trail of fire' in buying these types of watches so that it encourage you to research the topic. Btw Teddy, have you read the book "A Man and His Watch" by Matt Hrwnek?

I went through a collecting binge about 8 years ago during a time when I had more money than sense and was addicted to Ebay. I found a lot of great deals on new and lightly used watches and ended up with a lot of Invictas (around 60). There were a few I didn't like once I got them because they were uncomfortable or some minor thing. The majority I still like and wear occasionally. I love the eye-catching looks of them and they get attention. Only ever had trouble with two; a hand fell off each one but a local jeweler was able to fix them. Now I love my Seikos more and even though I have far fewer of those, I love the craftsmanship. I probably wouldn't buy another Invicta because I believe the quality has been dropping every year, judging from other people's experiences gleaned from watch forums and videos like this one. But I'll hang onto the ones I have for awhile.

Movado still has their fans though. Probably selling more than ever. If you want an instantly identifiable "fine" watch that doesn't break the bank, they are a brand to look at. Only serious watch connoisseur types look down on Movado. To 95% of the population that knows what it is, they will consider it a nice watch.

My father was in a watch store and the owner told him Invicta is one of the 2 most trouble prone brands (i.e. a lot of repairs) they sell. I can't recall the other brand.

I own 3 Invicta pro divers, all purchased on amazon. Two were purchased on a Black Friday sale so they were cheaper than cheap (around $105 for both). I agree completely with Teddy's comments regarding the brand's quasi-deceptive "MSRP" marketing practices. One place where I've seen it twice has been on cruise ships,, where they parade these things out with a big discount off MSRP, so everyone who hasn't done their homework or doesn't know better thinks they're getting a great bargain (like anything purchased on a cruise ship is going to be a bargain). Saw a guy purchase a gold with blue dial pro diver for about $100 more than what I paid for the same watch through amazon on Black Friday.

Five months ago, I became more than interested in the world of watches. In fact, I have become somewhat obsessed with the creatures. I have now some ten watches in my collection; none really worthy of significant importance or true value. I am now keenly informed and aware of the marketing, science, and horology behind hundreds of brands and am no longer bamboozled by the practices of the watchmakers you so disturbingly mentioned. In fact, it is with raw anger I discovered the ridiculous price gouging that the fleas, as well as luxury brands, market their watches to the uninformed customer. I sincerely hope that all of the viewers to this channel, as well as people of watch knowledge, clearly make an attempt to dissuade friends to seek quality vs quality appearance, and the catch and grab mentality of large store retailers offering fake discounts on marked up retail. However, do let the uninformed and underprivileged relish in the purchase of their petty insignificant toy watches. It pleases me to know that failure will be imminent in two years..maybe less..after purchase and only then will a real epiphany to change buying habits occur. Lastly, never pay retail! So many grey market dealers out there who will gladly sell the same luxury watch at a huge discount to retail. Long may your channel exist to prevent the fools from investing their hard earned money on garbage..for I was once a fool and perhaps still am.to an extent.

I agree with your points. However the watch purchasing market is dominated by those who know only how to tell time and shop for what they like and what meets their price point. Next are the group that purchase a brand for the recognition of their peer group, once again these buyers only know how to impress and most know how to tell the time. Down at the bottom, less than 1 % are the WIS group, the Watch Idiot Savants, who know what 6Hz versus 8Hz means, know what a dual fold deployant is, know what the differences of 316L versus 904 stainless are, can identify the brand of watch that their doctor wears down to the model number. This group - includes me - we mock the sheep, we tend to be polarized in our devotion to certain brands, and will spend far more than we should to tell time, some live without certain norms to allow them to wear a $10k timepiece and fret about its potential to attract thieves while riding public transit. Our tribe will continue, the internet is the glue holding us together, sealing us from the pedestrian masses as well as a Trip Lock crown.

One thing about the current state of Movado it does push down the value of the vintage watches. The 70s chronograph with the legendary Zenith El Primo movement come in at around $4k which is around $2k less than the Zenith with the same movement from that era (and around $30k less than a Rolex Daytona with that movement!) the Movado, like the one Teddy showed in the video, has a more classic case with a date at 12. The Zenith is more of a brutalist 70s case by that time with burst dials and date at 4. (prices are roughly translated from GBP)

But now that I've been watching your videos, I can think of 20 watches I should have bought vs these. I'll always keep them to remind me of where I was to where I know I'm going in relation to better quality watches.

I just got my first mechanical watch for my 23rd birthday and it’s a $30 winner/vigoroso brand and I’m really happy with it. In fact I love it so far! I may get something more expensive as I get more into the hobby but I have to learn how everything works first since I’m new to it all. Mine is an automatic mechanical and it keeps the date too. We’ll see how long it lasts fully wound and if it loses any time after a while. I truly don’t mind winding it more often or adjusting the time now and then so I’m not sure I’m a good candidate for luxury mechanical watches lol

I just started collecting entry-level watches (USD200-300), but before I did, I bought a USD230 DW watch. If only I knew it was just marketing for that price, I would just have the Citizen CB0160-51L or the Orient Mako III. I never looked that watch the same way again when I got the Orient Sun and Moon version 3.
