Just after Apollo 13 came out, I saw an interview with a NASA engineer who had worked on the launch pad for the real Apollo 13. He said that some of the scenes depicting the launch sequence were so well done that the only way he could tell they weren't real was because he knew there hadn't been a camera in that position.

Absolutely astonished that there is no mention of Mary Poppins on here. The research that went into identifying British garden birds and Cockney accents was so spot on, you'd hardly know it was an American production.

The Lion King still blows my mind even after 30 years. The animation, the music, the performances, it still holds up as perhaps the best ink-and-cell animated movie, and they didn't shy away from the understanding that a true hero requires true tragedy. Also: United! United! United! I'm a fan of Man U, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Chicago Cubs. If the Cubs can take the pennant, United can find their stride.

A Night to Remember was wrong in its portrayal of the Titanic sinking. The White Star Line denied eyewitness accounts of the ship splitting in two and the movie accepted their claim. Only when they found the ship did they realize the accounts were true.

The thing about eyewitness testimony is that it isn't always reliable. I have degrees in Constitutional Law. Even in the late 1980's, when I went to college, profs warned us that eyewitness testimony should be taken with a grain of salt. One example is an event that played out when I was a cop. One day I was looking for a man with a gun. I was told his shirt could be white, or half black/half white, green or even green and red. It turned out to be a polo shirt that was white with a black collar. Considering that Titanic survivors had been double traumatized (the event + the weather), until the wreck was found, no one could be absolutely sure. Even today, there is is a dispute about the rivets popping, or did Titanic run up on an ice shelf protruding from the iceberg? I could bring up other examples, but what's the point?

I can tell you as a science geek into permaculture and food production they basically got everything wrong. I mean everything. You simply can;t grow potatoes that way. Much of what he did was stupid or impossible making it a bizarre addition to the list. I place it up there with The Core for science accuracy. Mat Damon made it work, the silly script nearly killed it. It was the lack of knowledge by the viewers that made it "seem" smart.
