1 Timothy 2 - Should Women be SILENT in Church?? [Daily Bible Study]

Today we read 1 Timothy 2, when Paul encourages Timothy with how to deal with some issues in Ephesus. The issues of women in ministry, or even women in a church setting is a debated issue in churches today. We look at the 3 primary ways to interpret this and encourage all Christians to live charitably with each other.
Branch Together brings Christians together to read the Bible every day. We know as Christians that we are called to "branch out" and reach the world around us, but first we must come "together" and develop habits that help us grow to be more like the people Jesus is calling us to be. So before we Branch Out, we Branch Together. Some people might call this Daily Devotions, or Quiet Time...whatever you call it, our videos kickstart your most important daily habit.

May God give us more discernment on this. Unfortunately, women these days, like myself, have been conditioned by society and culture not by the unchanging word of God. I feel strongly God led me to read this chapter because He wants to show me that He indeed wants women to be submissive in the church to men because that is the designed order from the beginning. As a women I can straight up admit I have been easily deceived about many things but God is always willing to show me because I am open for correction. I noticed my husband, a very casual believer, has been given much more wisdom than I and most other women I know. He is not easily deceived. When I am submitting to Him my children follow suit and are submissive to him and me. They see the order in our home and because we are united in this we have more peace and control of our kids. Could it be order is necessary for peace and wisdom. Just some thoughts. Thank you for discussing.

These are my thoughts, some of which he pointed out. The book of 1 Timothy is all about false teachers. Paul mentions that Eve was deceived. When I look at false teachers today, I would say most of them are Co-pastored (wife & husband both preach). From my own EX-church i saw some reasons why this is an issue. Because the wife pastor would encourage the congregation to “get drunk in the Holy Spirit” but every time she asked the members to do this, the husband pastor would LEAVE THE SANCTUARY because he did not agree with the concept of “getting drunk in the Spirit.” That always bothered me & I also agreed with the husband, but the main point is there was division. It’s bad enough for husband & wife to be divided, but to be the PASTORS & have that division on full display for all to see was an even bigger issue. Back to false teachers, I would like to see the male to female ratio of the members of Co-pastor modeled churches. I don’t think men are as easily deceived or persuaded by a man (or woman’s) CHARISMA (would also be interested to see male to female ratio in charismatic churches). Men are grounded in FACTS & women are more influenced by FEELINGS (which is needed for her role as nurturer-she can easily sympathize & provide emotional support). For this reason, when I see any church Co-pastored by husband/wife I think there is a HIGH probability they are false teachers (where there’s smoke there’s usually fire). What I think happened, is Paul gave women a chance to pastor/teach whole churches & after he saw how many false teachers & divisions & issues this brought he said, NOPE, I’m putting an end to this. The main issue I’m seeing today is that women have taken over the church. Men have basically taken on the women’s role & become reserved & quiet & observers rather than vocal, strong leaders. Remember, our FLESH wants the OPPOSITE of what the Spirit (God) wants. So men are HAPPY to take the back seat, women are HAPPY to take the driver’s seat. As a man my (flesh) thoughts are “why would a woman WANT to take on this role. Sitting back in silence sounds AWESOME.” But we must fight against the flesh. So men must fight the urge to disappear & women must fight the urge to stand out. I found it very helpful to read all of 1 Timothy to gain even more understanding about WHY Paul gave these commands. ALL of it was to COMBAT false teaching & deception & show us the qualifications (lack thereof) & practices a false church might have. And as I said, churches that allow women to preach OFTEN have MULTIPLE boxes checked on the list of things NOT TO DO.

As one who has been long in ministry. Yes 60 years old is a wise cut off…. I have have lived it. The church/ ministry has limited resources as well. The “list” is talking about consistent support and not a one time bag of groceries. If there is no age cut off then most of not all will take advantage and miss out on trusting God for creativity and open doors. They have to work… period! Again the list mentioned is beyond the obvious assistance we would give anyone in need…. Including anyone who lost a spouse. I also agree that another qualification ia that the Person has to have life filled with evidence of faithfulness. We cannot think we are smarter than God. These standards are in place for a reason. Reasons we do realize until we see the fruit of obedience over many years.

With regards to this topic, I would like to suggest that the passage in 1 Tim. 2 is not necessarily transcultural, nor do I think that Paul was trying to create a stumbling block for women’s participation in worship. Certainly our faith is dependent on the work of the Holy Spirit in us (who are empty vessels ready to be filled by Him), and His gifting according to His mercy and grace. Verses in the Bible such as Joel 2:28 clearly leaves no one out, and there’s no shortage of verses and examples in the Bible, along with historical and present day accounts of God moving mightily in women, including in the role of teaching. So I can’t see Paul ostracizing women from this role as a generally applied directive, but rather a specific instruction for a particular time and context - and I believe the text supports this argument. Many read this passage and automatically jump to the negative narrative, and assert that Paul is being misogynistic, when in fact he is actually trying to protect the women of that time from judgement. I believe that Dickson’s argument of the difference between “teaching” and “preaching” is valid and applicable. We know this when we look at other passages where Paul makes the distinction between these gifts (1 Cor. 12:28, Rom. 12:4-8, etc.), and as you read his and other letters, it is clear that this distinction was understood among 1st Century Christians. In James 3:1, James strongly cautions the brethren/believers about not seeking to become “teachers”, because there is a greater judgement for those who teach incorrectly. “Teaching” is meant for those who can read, interpret and explain the Word correctly, whereas “Preaching” is intended for witnessing and sharing the good news after one has been taught. Paul is discouraging women of that time from “teaching”, not “preaching”. (and not from prophesying, speaking in tongues, performing miracles or any other gifting/ministry either). It is clear from the passage that women were not in a position to be properly equipped to teach. You need mentorship to become a “teacher”, similar to how Paul studied under Gamaliel (Acts 22:3), but this was not available to women of that time - only to men - and he didn’t want women to use their new-found freedom to assume the role of teaching without proper training (additionally, considering the very low literacy rates of the time among men, women would be even less privileged to have an education, making matters worse). So given the opportunity, there’s no reason why women can’t teach or be Pastors. Paul uses the illustration from Genesis because God told Adam directly about the forbidden fruit in Genesis 2, prior to Eve being formed. Adam would have shared the knowledge about the forbidden fruit with Eve after she was formed. When Eve was tempted/questioned by the serpent/devil, she was unable to correctly respond/deceived, and eventually sinned, causing judgement on herself and Adam (to be clear, Adam sinned as well). Paul is basically trying to explain how important it is to have a full understanding and knowledge of the word, otherwise you will be prone to fail/sin, which the women of that time would have been in a position to do so. Paul ends the passage about women “saved through childbearing”, not in the context that this is their only purpose (as Augustine incorrectly interpreted and asserted), nor that every women who gives birth gets saved and goes to heaven, but rather imploring women of that time that, if they want to do good, then they can carry out a very important role of “teaching” (without facing judgement, and thus “saved”): which is to raise up Godly children “in faith, love and holiness with propriety”.

@@sjarjoura9188 First, you cannot separate teaching from preaching in the context of the pulpit, both are critical to the other. Second, you failed to mention the entirety of what Paul wrote, he wrote BOTH, teaching or exercising authority over. So, both teaching and preaching (both the job of a pastor) are included in this passage and cannot be ignored. You wrote "I can't see Paul ostracizing women from this role as a generally applied directive, but rather a specific instruction for a particular time and context - and I believe the text supports this argument.".... Several issues here. First you are clearly admitting to an eisegesis of the text. You not being able to "see" Paul doing one thing or another has nothing to do with what God is commanding in this specific text, and, you can "believe" text supports you idea, but that does not make it so. Read 2 Peter 1... these verses are not just penned as an idea by Paul, "no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" .. these are God's words... NOT Paul's ideas or intentions. You added to scripture here (eisegesis) as well when you make the assertion that Paul was stating that women were not to teach because they lacked mentorship.... really? Where do you get that idea from? It is NOWHERE in the text... You're really reading into scripture what is NOT there. To that idea, and since this is God's word and not Paul's .. this message is not just for Timothy and the Church at Ephesus it is for the first century church as much as it is for the church today. That being said, it is only in recent times that liberal opinions, like yours, have surfaced as to the pastorate for women, yet from the early church in Israel (under the first covenant) and through the birth of the Christian church (the new covenant) you never find a woman as a rabbi, or a pastor over a church. What current church ideas are showing us is this as well; every church that has allowed a woman to preach/teach/pastor has eventually gone on to redefine marriage as same sex marriage being acceptable and then eventually allowing those who are in sexually immoral life styles into the pulpit; a direct violation of God's commands. So, while you present a decent argument to those who do not study their bibles, you are only fooling them and others with your position on this matter. Your position is filled with eisegesis rather than expository positions. Can women teach?... the bible is clear... yes. Yes, they can teach other women and children. But they are not to carry or hold that position over a man in the structure of the church. They can also teach in the home and outside of the church where there is no church authority, such as conferences, universities etc. Can they preach? ... again, yes.. if it is to the same audience as previously listed; other women and to children. Are they to Pastor a church.. No.. God is very clear on this issue. They are not to teach from the pulpit when there are men in the congregation or to exercise pastoral authority over a man. All of this is very clear scripturally.

Both "sides" of the argument that I articulate in the video are both fervent about the value and authority of the Scripture, bit disagree on how to do that. Example: it's difficult to reconcile Paul seemingly endorsing women as prophets (prophets certainly have authority as they speak directly for God!!) with comments about headship and such. Not an easy task. We do our best to serve God faithfully with our imperfect understanding.

In this video, he stated that the 60 year old widow threshold should be lowered because it's too high and 'doesn't make since' although IT'S IN THE BIBLE... & then explained that he doesn't have sympathy (is this christian like) for those interpreting the text IN THE BIBLE word for word. If some things can be altered for the times how come not all off it? I'm amazed that no one seems to be as confused as me , please help me understand.

Firstly, he never *explicitly* said the threshold should be lowered; He said at 6:10 ".... We are going to use the wisdom that we have to make a system that's best....", And l guess that *wisdom* will be from God through prayers. Also, it's well known not to interpret the word of God word for word. If that was the case, then no wisdom would be required to read the Bible (since everything would be clean and clear). For instance, it's said in this same chapter (verse 8): *Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing* . This would thus imply that praying should always involve lifting up our hands, but is that true? Is it a must? Does it really change something? Does it change the state of your heart or render you more pure? In addition you said he said he doesn't have sympathy for people interpreting the Bible as such; well, l didn't get him say that (or l missed it).

@@R839jdkk83nHd I have to lovingly disagree that it's not common knowledge or well known to not interpret the bible 'word for word' as there are plenty of ministers/pastors who say that it is all the word of God & shouldn't be questioned at all. If the bible requires wisdom for it to be read then why are children reading the bible? 99% of children shouldn't touch it then. He didn;t say it should be lowered but implied it @ 6:10 if we're just supposed to use our wisdom instead of following what it says then how isn't it all up for question or debate if we have the luxury of using our wisdom to change the context to 'fit our times'? Does that mean its outdated then? The moment he said he has no sympathy for people who's interpretation of it was what the text actually states is 7:46 since you may have missed it.

@@justthemessenger... Never did I say we got the luxury to use *our* wisdom to understand the word of God. I will like to emphasize something I earlier said, but you missed it: that *wisdom* is from God, and obtained via prayers and meditations; Sure children read the bible (which is something great and should be encouraged) but do they completely understand the message? I guess no (and they easily lose focus)! They usually need mediators to break down things to them. I will go further by saying most of us need mediators. Those mediators are pastors, preachers, or whatsoever name we give to them (you get the point). With time they acquired more wisdom than us, and hence we go to them for enlightenment or clarification on things we can't get around. To conclude, he said he isn't sympathetic to *a view* , not to people (there's a difference). I don't know if we are now in phase?

Paul never commands something without giving an explanation to his reasoning. He uses the same tactic, when giving this command, as Jesus did when asked if God permits divorce. They both referred back to the beginning of creation, revealing God's original intent in his beautiful design. God's original purpose was that one man and one woman were to come together and should not divorce. Likewise, Paul here refers to the beginning to show that the original intent was to have the man lead the woman. One of the primary reasons for this order was not favoritism, but was to give us a picture of who God is and our relationship with him. The structure of the family and the structure of the church paint us a picture of the relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It also paints the picture of the relationship of the church and of Jesus Christ. Nowhere in scripture do we see that the husband is called to submit to the wife and in the same manner, nowhere in scripture do we see a woman in an eldership position. We do see that women are given leadership roles as deacons and are encouraged as prophets, but again, nowhere are they called to an overseer of the church or in our modern terms, elder/pastor. Remember, being a leader does not mean greater value. On the contrary, it means greater judgement, greater accountability and greater responsibility. But the value of a man and woman are equal in their distinct roles.

For 7 years I have been trying to convince my MOM that money in the church is for the POOR not the rich pastors or fancy buildings, praying in tongues all at the same time without an interpreter is NOT BIBLICAL, getting “DRUNK in the Spirit” is not biblical (fruit of Spirit is self-control), the church does not belong to TWO PEOPLE (it belongs to all of the members). All this time I should have been talking to my DAD. It’s no wonder after 7 years I’ve gotten NOWHERE with my mom. I love her & she is a godly woman, & great mom, but she is super stubborn when it comes to defending the charismatic church. And I notice over the years my dad aligns his beliefs more & more with whatever my mom says (he suffered a stroke about 5 years ago & has been very dependent on her). Hopefully it’s not too late, but I must speak to them both as Paul says in 1 Timothy 5 “do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father...older women as mothers...in all purity.” The more I read 1 Timothy the more I’m convinced it’s all about false teachers, false practices, how to spot them, how not to become them, & even how to break the news to your family & church members.

It applies to the women in Ephesus because the cult of Artemis tried to forbid girls from marrying and having children. The fear was that the man must worship (sexual) at the temple for his wife to conceive because Artemis was the goddess of fertility. Thus Paul is saying "safe" in childbirth. Because women are no different to men. All are saved through Jesus, not some through childbirth. And when did childbirth ever save anyone from deception of a false teacher. Paul specifically uses different words in original text that are all sloppily translated into one word "teach" when he is clearly trying to stop forcefulnusurping women, and one in particular from taking over or from swaying other women. Complementarianism is not 'Complementary" to anyone. Strong Godly women of good character and solid foundations are thrown out, crushed, abused by such pastors who are no more than the hirelings Jesus warned us about.ALL Complementarians need to study Jesus and women again because He always sent them out as messengers and proclaimers.

Look at the fact that Jesus never once tells the women this. Quite the contrary in fact. Look up the cult of Artemis. Look up what they believed about Eve being first created then Adam. Look up how they considered marriage a repulsive thing and childbirth dangerous outside of worship of the goddess. Look it up. Paul was friends with Philip the Evangelist who had four daughters, all prophetesses. Do you think he forbade them to speak in front of the congregations? Acts 21:8-9 Come on. There are iterally rooms full of information from that era. Paul addresses these false teachings in Ephesus and in Corinth and that was why he wrote a rebuke. If women false teach doctrine they deserve a rebuke, just like if a man does. How many people are you going to be effective in reaching for Christ if that is the extent of your explanation and understanding. Give me a break. And how about actually defending the gospel on another unGodly site instead of trying to grind your brothers and sisters down and discourage them.

Roy, Your post to made me chuckle a little bit.... but in a good way. I can completely understand some of the frustration in the confusion. I think some of the biggest problems we have with this generation, is that it’s still not working in Gods system. So we are interpreting a form of reality that seems to be OK but is still outside of His system. Like when any of the great patriarchs had multiple wives. It wasn’t meant to be that way but God allowed it and they certainly had more problems because of it. Paul’s tone has an urgency to it that may be hard to culturally understand. I believe if you meditate with God on this, He will unpack it for you in how it should translate into today. Most importantly, we are to be others centered. That would mean that if man has the ultimate authority and is doing things right, he will be putting the woman’s needs before his own as Christ loved the church. The liberty of free will God has given us, so as men that would always need to be extended to women. A woman’s submission should always be freely given.

Times of praise in the spirit (tongues) or singing in the spirit (tongues) needs no interpretation because its a form of worship. The first time I entered a spirit filled church and heard the congregation singing in the spirit as a non believer, I found it to be beautiful. It sounded quite angelic. The teaching of St. Paul about Christian women that must/should learn with humility how to KEEP Quiet/Silent in the CHURCH of God in Christ... does not mean that Christian women are prohibited from being Servants/Helpers of the CHURCH... NOPE... that was not what St. Paul had meant... take for example what St. Paul wrote to the Romans (Rom.16/paraphrased)... " I (St. Paul) commended unto you PHOEBE our sister (the one who carried the letter of St. Paul), who is a "SERVANT" (helper) of the CHURCH which is in Cenchrea"... Take note 1:... St. Paul did not say, "Phoebe our sister, who is a Pastor/Rabbi/Teacher/Elder/Priestess of the CHURCH... none of which was mentioned but a SERVANT... What St. Paul had meant was NO WOMEN to be the LEADER (Acting Priesthood) of the Church on earth... Christ Jesus is the HEAD (Priesthood) of the Church of God... but before Christ ascended back to Heaven and seated at the right side of the Throne of His Father... Christ assigned first His Apostles (All Men) Headed by St. Peter to be Christ's Acting Priesthood to Govern, Lead, and Manage the CHURCH of God until Christ Jesus comes back again... Christ Jesus did not put "IN CHARGE" any women, including Blessed Mary or Mary Magdalene in the Body of Christ to be the Church's PRIESTHOOD... But Christian Women could be servants/helpers of the Church or even Prophetess (female prophets) if chosen and decided by God... Take note 2:... DEBORAH was the only Female JUDGE and PROPHETESS chosen by God in/for Israel... but she was not chosen by God as a "PRIESTESS" in the Temple of God during the Old Covenant of God... God never used any Women as PRIESTHOOD for His Temple / Synagogue... which is also the same thing with the Second (New) Covenant of God, that NO Women Leader or Acting Priesthood to the Body of Christ (the CHURCH of God)... ONLY MEN can be chosen by God to be Christ's Acting PRIESTHOOD on Earth...That is God's WILL and PREROGATIVES... (hands down, non-debatable). Therefore, Women can be God's JUDGE or PROPHETESS... but never God's PRIESTESS for His Temple/Church for both the Old and the New Covenant of God... That is what "Silent/Quiet" in the Church is all about... When it comes to Spiritual/Religious Matters... "MAN is the HEAD of every WOMAN"... why?... for God is the Head of Christ Jesus, so as "Christ Jesus is the HEAD of every Man"... (1 Corinthians 11:3/paraphrased)... Facts and Truth, Biblically speaking... Amen Hebrews 7:12/paraphrased... "But when the PRIESTHOOD was changed, the LAW must be changed as well."... Christ Jesus is the Sole New High PRIESTHOOD of God... Glory, Praise and Thanks be to God in Christ Jesus' name... Amen.

All of us are called to be disciples and disciples are meant to share and spread the gospel. I think there is a lot more to this verse then simply women shouldn't teach a man, when it does say to share the gospel. When Paul says women shouldn't assume authority i think its because the women of that time were doing just that, so it is something that still applies to us today. I think what he's trying to say is women shouldn't place themselves before men as the head of the church and preach. It also says later in Timothy to teach to brothers and sisters, no where does it say "Now this is just for the men to read and do" when it comes up.

Wasn’t Paul’s command in 1st Timothy 2:12 related to cultural issues for that time that don’t apply today? This objection presents itself with different nuances, but the basic argument is that Paul was only prohibiting women in Timothy’s church from becoming elders. He wasn’t intending to make the command binding on the church for all time. The problem with this objection is that it neglects verses 13-14. Let’s read the passage in context. “Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.” (1st Timothy 2:11-14) Two things should be observed. First, nothing in the text indicates that Paul’s prohibition is due to a cultural situation-such as uneducated or problematic women teaching in the church. Second, Paul gives us a two-part answer as to why he gives this command. “For” means because; meaning, the reason Paul is giving this command is because, “Adam was created was first, then Eve.” The first reason Paul lists why women cannot hold authority over men in the church by taking on the role of pastor is because it would violate the creation order. Men have been placed in authority over women and children both in the home and the church. This has nothing to do with holding women back or being sexist. This is God’s good design. He knows what is best for His people and the church. The second reason is because the woman, not Adam, was deceived and became a transgressor. This is a tricky portion of Scripture. Is Paul saying that Adam wasn’t deceived? No, Adam was deceived because he ate the fruit and disobeyed just like Eve. What Paul is saying is that Satan tempted the woman and consequently the woman led her husband into error. Adam should have acted as the head of his wife and protected her from Satan’s lies by holding fast to God’s commands. In God’s church, men must lead and protect women by teaching and obeying the Word of God. When the order is reversed, like in the Garden, we are taking women out from under the headship and protection of men; thus, opening them and the whole church up to Satan’s original schemes. Therefore, Paul’s command in 1st Timothy 2:12 is not based on cultural circumstances whatsoever. His command that women cannot teach or take authority over men is rooted in the created order and fall of man, and thus binding on all churches for all ages.

I suggest my short and free essay on Deborah. Reply for it if desired. Men and women are perfectly equal spiritually. That is how a woman could judge men of their sins, including homicide. She was a pastor, according to the scriptures. This is how the Judges are described in Chronicles. To say a woman can be a Judge over Israel, but a woman can't be an elder in a small church, just doesn't make any sense scripturally.

  • @TimWismer
    @TimWismer4 ай бұрын

You mention multiple times about the division that is often caused within the Church by this passage. Division seems to be a larger concern for you with regard to this passage than false doctrine. It is good for us to seek and promote unity within the Church, but never at the cost of true doctrine. When you address the issue of cultural relevance, you use the analogy of 1 Timothy 5:9 which says that no widow under 60 should be part of the program of assistance to widows. I agree that we should not insist on the direct application of this 60 year-old cutoff in modern churches for similar programs. However, this analogy fails because no absolute and unchanging principal is given by Paul to justify the age of 60, whereas in 1 Timothy 2, Paul grounds his rule about women not speaking with an unchanging truth, namely that "Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression." (2:13-14). He doesn't merely give us a rule about women speaking in church and then leave us to wonder if that rule applies only to certain cultures and not to others. He bases the rule on something unchanging, in order to make it clear that the application is universal, so that Christians reading the rule will not have to guess whether it applies to them.

God the Father is also the head of Christ. Does that mean that God the Father is better than Christ? more important than Christ? By no means. Same for man. God the Father loved Christ and worked together with Christ to accomplish the plan of salvation and indeed gave Christ all the glory. And indeed God the Father and Christ are one. So, the same for man. Man and woman are meant to be one flesh, or one body in Christ, they are to serve one another in reverence to God, man is not superior or more important than woman and vice versa, they are to love their woman, love means to serve, guide and protect, as Christ, served His Church even to death. Nothing to do with pride or superiority here. Let's all humble ourselves. If you are the head you are the head to serve the other in reverence to God, not to dominate over. No ego, if in doubt, just follow what Christ did, you'll do well
