I know these videos are a few years old at this point but I appreciate the content and feedback that you guys gave for portraits that were submitted at the time. I found your co-hosts video 1st and then watched yours. I question though, if in your opinion that its possible to be so technically perfect that it kills the character of the photo? I have seen very technical "perfect " pictures that are just boring and then others that may not be lit or posed perfectly that are just striking . What matters more in the end?
I don't recall what I said, but I would say that you have to have both to be truly great most of the time. You can't just ignore one side and expect to capture lightning in a bottle.
All setups gave great results, but I wouldn’t have an idea to create the last one. Genius
Thank you so much!
John- just discovered you and your work; ❤it! Kudos on the talent👏
Wow, thank you!
Not sure if it's my favorite but I recently did a band promotional shoot where is used a fresnel lens and barn doors illuminating a raised glass and the subject holding it, that came out very nice. I also used a bounce to give the shadows a little detail. I was given a painting as the inspiration for the shoot and the band placed the painting side by side with my image with the caption, "nailed it".
Well done!
It's too bad that Elinchrom doesn't support Nikon. I've been waiting for them to update thier firmware for the remote so I can use the battery units on location but nothing as of yet. I've got a studio full of Elinchrom but I have to use another companies strobes on location. Come on Elinchrom, get with the program. everyone else supports the Z9 and Z8, even the cheep Chinese companies.
People use my Elinchrom Pro triggers for Nikon with their Z8 and Z9 while shooting HSS all the time in my workshops.
@@JohnGress I was just reading the elinchrom website. It says there are issues. With the Z9 and don’t even mention the Z8.
@@JohnGress the website says the Z9 has issues and don’t even list the Z8.
I'm thinking the average person won't see much of a difference vs the pixels peeping photographers that we are.
Since little league season is approaching, can you do a Sportrait tutorial, using pro light mods Summer 2024 edition 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I am sure James would love that! =)
I really like the “one light” lesson, because they’re simple, and it’s much easier to see exactly how each set up translates to the photo. These shots look awesome. I especially like the runners coming out of the ocean. The fabulous clouds and sun that day definitely helped.
Thanks Bob! I really appreciate it!
Amazing photos! Model on boat did you use gels or you just fix it in post?
Thanks! I didn't use any gels or much post color correction. What problem do you think I was correcting?
@@JohnGress Hi! I mean Flash temprature is 5500. You are shooting in the evening.
I love that last example, using the vflat in front of the large softbox. Thanks, John!
Bet! I hope these ideas help!
Thank you for this🎉
Thank you! I hope it helps!
Quick question Doc, what backdrop stand was that? It looks lite and fit the 53 inches backdrop.
Good morning! Thats just two aluminum stands and a grip arms. You can learn more about it here kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2dst6V7fM6_g6w.html
great tutorial!! love all the content John. Always refreshing to see actual professional photographers, who actually know the technical side of photography, produce correct content... so much half jumbled rubbish out there!!
Thank you so so much!
7:28 I was assisting on a beauty shoot a while ago for a Vogue, and I couldnt believe how small an aperture was being used! F16, F22... and even then because it was medium format and lens distance to subject, the whole head wasn't in focus. And it needed ALOT of flash power for shooting at 100iso
That had to be hell on the model too!
@@JohnGress she didnt complain... she had her eyes closed for most of it for styling purposes 😂 Briese lights
cool one,thank you
Thank you too!

@JohnGress, I recently bought a Nikon Z 24-70/2.8 lens and never looked twice at the display on the lens. After watching your video, I checked the display and realized that it shows the depth of field markings (and they change depending on the aperture, focal length, and point of focus). Thanks for pointing this out in your video. This is great to know for when photographing groups.
Awesome! I think this knowledge came from shooting film when you couldn't zoom in and check things on the back of the camera.
Thanks for the bideo
You bet!
Кратко, всё по делу. И итоговые фото в примерах качественно выполнены.
Thank you so much!
Sir....for you full shoot, which lighting is the best "clockwise"?
If I have rd 24-70 f2.8 , do I need a Rf 85f2?
I supposed it wouldn’t be that much different than what you have.
1)which prime a good suggestion in your opinion 2)also suggest a compact sharp a all round carry
Either one of the other 2 85s in this video.
great video, thank you
You are welcome!
Thank you for another amazing video!
Thanks for watching!
8:10 "I would stick to the electronic shutter" I think you mean 1st curtain shutter to avoid the rolling shutter distortion associated with the electronic shutter and horizontal movement.
I meant the medical shutter.
I just did a lowlight session without and feel so proud that I didn’t need it!
Congratulations!
Hi John, I just got a brand new Profoto B10x as my first off camera flash, and it died after emitting about 20 flashes, at the 2nd day of test use. Now I consider switching the system to something more robust, before I get invested. The B10x was 'made in Poland', and the Profoto 3' Silver Octa I bought with it was 'made in South Korea' - so the whole 'Profoto is made in Sweden' thing seems history, sadly. Where is the Elinchrome five manufactured?
Sorry to hear that you are going through that. I believe the lights are assembled in Switzerland. But regardless of the country on the table, they're just well made and almost half the price. Please LMK if you have any more questions.
@@JohnGress Thanks a lot, John - would you still recommend the ELB500 in 2024? I somehow like the idea of having electronics and battery decoupled from the flash head, to be more flexible with head positioning.
It's not a bad way to go. many people hate needing to use the ring adapter and the cable but to me it's like having a built in sand bag. I forget how the specs compare though between the two.

Most succinct, to-the-point review of the lighting patterns I’ve seen on KZread
Thank you so much!
This is what it have been looking for. As an aspiring mobile photographer who is limited only to the use of continuous light. I had been struggling with all the light setup i can get because i really do not want to use one light setup. I cannot thank you enough. Now I know what to buy.
Awesome that is great to hear and good luck!
Negative Fill is just another name for localized shading. Creating Dark Zones with the use of Black Vflats, Black Flags and Duvetyn Floppy's around a subject while using powerful speedlights or strobes requires the same level of understanding as lighting and reflective light. Strategically place Dark Zones shading Diffused light around a subject helps to create contrast separation on your subject from high value backgrounds.
Such an awesome setup! Keep up the good work. 📷📷
Thanks!
This is the 101 that I totally needed. As someone who has just started shooting indoors for portfolio purposes, I had never imagine how crazy the whole set can pile up before looking at the set at the end. Your generosity is hugely appreciated.
Thats great to hear! I hope it helps!
Hello, can you please review the Hasselblad X2D. Would love to know your thoughts.
Can this be done with two light ??
You can't get a 5 light look with two lights.
I love your work. You are my inspiration. Bug kisses
Thank you so much!
If your photographs were a person I'd be so hopelessly in love I'd crawl over broken glass to kiss the hand of their hairdresser.
Ha! Thank you so much!
i realy love this style. if can change the background like this 😮💨

Hey John. A little tip as an instructor that I found works ( especially with newbies). Always use forward slash when typing aperture. I think it reinforces the fact that it’s a fraction. A lot of people have trouble remembering which number has a bigger hole. f/2 rather than F2. Everyone understands they’d rather have 1/2 a pie rather than 1/8 of one. 😊
Thanks. I’d never thought of it that way.
Very precise and knowledgeable.
Thank you!
Such a great video! Thankyou!
Thank you!
Adorama don’t ship items to Ghana?😍
Dicas Valiosas. Muito Obrigado!
Muito Obrigado!
Does the Elinchrom save the last TTL settings when you switch over to manual?
Yes they do!
Lots of great info. Aways said that knowing DOF of apertures of focal lengths you are using is a must.
Thanks!
As always helpful and informative, Thank you so much John! Good luck!
My pleasure!
Excellent explanation, thank you John.
Very welcome!
The violent contrast between blur and sharpness is to photography what Mc Donald's is to gastronomy. It does not isolate the subject (composition does) but destroys the middle ground and depth, as multiple layers create depht and dimension. With only one overblurry layer for background, you get a flat mush of pixels giving the feeling that the subject is standing in front of a wallpaper or a green screen. If the environement is distracting, instead of destroying it, choose a more dynamic angle.
Great video. Thx for breakdown and comparisons
Thanks for watching!
