I know these videos are a few years old at this point but I appreciate the content and feedback that you guys gave for portraits that were submitted at the time. I found your co-hosts video 1st and then watched yours. I question though, if in your opinion that its possible to be so technically perfect that it kills the character of the photo? I have seen very technical "perfect " pictures that are just boring and then others that may not be lit or posed perfectly that are just striking . What matters more in the end?

I don't recall what I said, but I would say that you have to have both to be truly great most of the time. You can't just ignore one side and expect to capture lightning in a bottle.

Not sure if it's my favorite but I recently did a band promotional shoot where is used a fresnel lens and barn doors illuminating a raised glass and the subject holding it, that came out very nice. I also used a bounce to give the shadows a little detail. I was given a painting as the inspiration for the shoot and the band placed the painting side by side with my image with the caption, "nailed it".

It's too bad that Elinchrom doesn't support Nikon. I've been waiting for them to update thier firmware for the remote so I can use the battery units on location but nothing as of yet. I've got a studio full of Elinchrom but I have to use another companies strobes on location. Come on Elinchrom, get with the program. everyone else supports the Z9 and Z8, even the cheep Chinese companies.

@JohnGress, I recently bought a Nikon Z 24-70/2.8 lens and never looked twice at the display on the lens. After watching your video, I checked the display and realized that it shows the depth of field markings (and they change depending on the aperture, focal length, and point of focus). Thanks for pointing this out in your video. This is great to know for when photographing groups.

Hi John, I just got a brand new Profoto B10x as my first off camera flash, and it died after emitting about 20 flashes, at the 2nd day of test use. Now I consider switching the system to something more robust, before I get invested. The B10x was 'made in Poland', and the Profoto 3' Silver Octa I bought with it was 'made in South Korea' - so the whole 'Profoto is made in Sweden' thing seems history, sadly. Where is the Elinchrome five manufactured?

Negative Fill is just another name for localized shading. Creating Dark Zones with the use of Black Vflats, Black Flags and Duvetyn Floppy's around a subject while using powerful speedlights or strobes requires the same level of understanding as lighting and reflective light. Strategically place Dark Zones shading Diffused light around a subject helps to create contrast separation on your subject from high value backgrounds.

Hey John. A little tip as an instructor that I found works ( especially with newbies). Always use forward slash when typing aperture. I think it reinforces the fact that it’s a fraction. A lot of people have trouble remembering which number has a bigger hole. f/2 rather than F2. Everyone understands they’d rather have 1/2 a pie rather than 1/8 of one. 😊

The violent contrast between blur and sharpness is to photography what Mc Donald's is to gastronomy. It does not isolate the subject (composition does) but destroys the middle ground and depth, as multiple layers create depht and dimension. With only one overblurry layer for background, you get a flat mush of pixels giving the feeling that the subject is standing in front of a wallpaper or a green screen. If the environement is distracting, instead of destroying it, choose a more dynamic angle.
