Mastering Cinematic Lighting: Behind the Scenes of a Magazine Cover Lifestyle Photoshoot
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Get ready for an exciting video! In this week's tutorial, we dive deep into the art of lighting as I share my techniques for illuminating four incredible lifestyle looks during an on-location cover photoshoot for Positively Aware Magazine.
Drawing from my expertise in advertising photography, I reveal how I used multiple flash units and modifiers to simulate the light that you would naturally find in a nightlife scene. As we go behind-the-scenes, you'll lean how I strategically positioned and manipulated each light source step-by-step.
Hopefully these valuable insights and cinematic lighting techniques will help elevate your own lifestyle photography endeavors.

Fantastic Job John Gress, and thanks for mentioning the time frame you had to create these images! One will love to have a full day to shoot at a location like that but like in your situation many times the time window is very narrow. I will dare say(and paraphrasing Tim Gunn) "make it work" and that you did. Thank you Sir for your generosity of sharing so much of your work in this channel!

Thank you so much! It was a world wind for sure. Coming up with the poses and wrangling everyone was a challenge too.

@@JohnGress Sir actually I thought of something based on your video(experience). In the future if I was in a similar situation like the one of the Piano Player and the Crowd I think I may do 2 shots(camera being in a tripod) one focused on the Piano Player and a second one focused on the crowd and then merge the in Post. Again John Gress thank you for sharing so much in your channel Sir!
You are a great teacher

Thanks Anthony! Sometimes you only need 6 lights 😉
Absolutely amazing run through of this shoot. To do all that in 90 minutes just goes to show your great talent. I hope you were given a sharpener from the bar afterwards.

I really enjoyed this real world situation, your thought process to make the best of the tools and time you had on hand. More on location (and outdoor, perhaps?) lessons would be awesome.

9:50 - Definitely chaotic the scene yeah to be precise with the kicker. Wonder if you have assistants to help ya out even on such short notice shoots or do you prefer doing it all yourself?
@JohnGress

On a commercia shoot I would have an assistant but a lot of times they get in the way of me being able to execute. Looking back over my carrer I can only think of one person I worked with who could really execute perfectly on set. I could tell him what modifiers I wanted on the lights and where to put them and he could do it perfecty. Plus he was a fashion designer and not a photographer, so go figure.
