For years I wanted to photograph triathletes running out of Lake Michigan at sunrise. So we headed out to the beach before dawn with an Elinchrom 5 in a 100cm Rotolux Deep Octabox, one of my favorite modifiers because it's versatile and perfect for both full-body shots and closeups.
To capture the action, I set my camera to 1/5000th of a second at f2 at ISO, which was fast enough to freeze every droplet of water in motion. High-speed sync was crucial here to balance the bright sunrise with my strobe.
When you're shooting outside, the first thing you want to think about is what f-stop you want to use to get the depth of field you're looking for. Then, pick your shutter speed and ISO combination so that the sky is exposed correctly...

I love that last example, using the vflat in front of the large softbox. Thanks, John!

I really like the “one light” lesson, because they’re simple, and it’s much easier to see exactly how each set up translates to the photo. These shots look awesome. I especially like the runners coming out of the ocean. The fabulous clouds and sun that day definitely helped.

Not sure if it's my favorite but I recently did a band promotional shoot where is used a fresnel lens and barn doors illuminating a raised glass and the subject holding it, that came out very nice. I also used a bounce to give the shadows a little detail. I was given a painting as the inspiration for the shoot and the band placed the painting side by side with my image with the caption, "nailed it".

Hi my dear friend. I am guessing the water is not saline, right? or, what do you do in such cases? do you apply w40 kind of non-oxide product? great shoot as always. Keep doing the limit is not completely limitation but action haha
