Keith Rucker - VintageMachinery.org

This is my channel where I shoot video of some of my favorite things. I enjoy working on and restoring all kinds of vintage machinery - from woodworking machines, metal working machines, old farm equipment, steam engines, and steam locomotives. I spend a lot of my spare time volunteering at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture where I help to restore and keep their machinery up and running.

I used to use a 4’ aluminum pipe wrench like that in the oil fields of Northern Alberta. The reason they’re made from aluminum is not for lighter weight. It’s because there’s no way they’ll make a spark if banged against steel. Where drilling can release flammable gas, one spark could blow the place up.

Glacier is very nice, but you should also check out Yellowstone. As a stretch go to Alaska, you would probably really like Kennecott in Wrangles St Elias national Park. You don't need to do it all in a year, but could get one park a year. Make sure you get reservations for Glacier park entrance well in advance.

A buddy of mine who is retired came and stayed at my house. He left on Sat. and my wife asked him what he wanted for breakfast before he left. He said pie. Now that is some incentive to think about retirement!

Congratulations Keith! I've been very curious about your day job (I have my suspicions). Enjoy the road trip to California! Yes, it take a day to get across Texas. A long day. I'm in San Diego, and I'm hoping to make it up to the BarZ Bash. If so, I hope I get a chance to meet you!

Hello Keith, I wish you luck in your retirement. I retired 8 1/2 years ago and don't have much money, but couldn't be happier. Walked out of my employment on my last day and thought now I don't have to put up with anyone else's bullsh**t any more. My Doughter had a trip to the US some years ago and went to Glacier National Park and said it was spectacular, you will enjoy it.

A road trip? For only a couple of weeks? Oh heck no. Take 4, 6 months at least. My wife and I did that when we were in our late 20s and have never regretted it one bit.

Enjoy your retirement. Very much enjoy watching a master craftsman at work. I did my fitting and machining apprenticeship about 5 decades ago and was blessed with some of the most patient and talented tradesmen you could ever meet, using machine not dissimilar to those in your workshop. Beyond the apprenticeship we had several 'allied trades' segments including black smithing, copper smithing, welding etc. We were trained to a level where we were certified so we could act as quality controllers - I later worked as a marine engineer on a steam destroyer and a submarine. Think I used every skill at least once, but some only once. Can remember forging a bearing housing then pouring and machining the white metal bearing in the middle of the South China Sea. Look forward to the continued YT posts.

Bluepoint made a 30" adjustable wrench I think. I have been on the lookout for a large adjustable wrench for doing prop shafts nuts. Some of the stuff I work on goes up to around 6". There are older adjustable wrenches that go bigger but I have never seen one for sale around here, and they command lots of cash.

The best advice I can give for retirement is to keep yourself busy doing the things you want to do. Never let yourself be inactive because that will ruin your health and leave you bored to death. I have heard too many cases of people dying shortly after retirement because they sat down in front of a TV and did nothing.

Glacier is amazing, but September in Glacier can be iffy with snow. But it is realistically the best time of the year to be there. The trees will be changing color and that is beautiful. Just be aware that it can snow and lock you out of some of the higher areas. But going in September is actually much more reliable than going in June. Logan pass gets up to 80 feet of packed snow that has to be cleared before the road can be opened in the Spring. And in really bad years the avalanche danger will prevent them from even working to open the road which can result in a July opening. Just remember you can't tow a trailer over Logan Pass.
