What I don't get about this "being ace means being nothing and therefore doesn't count as anything" is that it's not even true! Like, being straight is just as much defined as being not into the same s3x as it is being into the opposite s3x, same thing in reverse for being gay, or else both would be indistinctable from bi and ace. In fact, this is one of my favourite ways of explaining aceness in relation to the other big three: You have attraction to one (gay), the other (straight), both (bi) and neither (ace). Or you have lack of attraction to one (straight), the other (gay), both (ace) and neither (bi).

I don't think I'm ace, but I've had almost no sex. There are other reasons why some people can't have intimate relationships. It's not always a lack of attraction, but a lack of confidence and fear of rejection.

Honestly, I do like being aroace for the most part. Life feels a lot less confusing when you don’t have sex and romance to worry about if I’m honest, and I can also approach these topics with a much more general approach, considering it’s not quite tainted by the enjoyment of the topics at hand.

It's no coincidence that "Peanuts" came into being during the 1950s when angst-based humor (what was called sick humor, replacing set pieces and mother-in-law jokes) was coming into vogue. The original theme of "Peanuts" was cruelty among children. As Schulz once explained Charlie Brown's losing baseball team, "Winning is great, but it isn't funny."

I think the reason why Charlie Brown works so well as a character is because he’s relatable, he’s not the cool or popular kid or the protagonist with special powers but your everyday guy. Yes he suffers with anxiety and depression to the point he struggles to do normal things but he doesn’t let them define his life, he buckles down and gets on with it even though he knows that whatever he does will go wrong he has that small bit of hope that it will go right. It a little saddening to see how he’s treated by those around him and it is nice to see him get a little bit of recognition for the things he does like the time Lucy buried Linus blanket so Charlie offered to stay the night at Linus house to help him through the night without the blanket. Linus even thanks him for it to which Charlie replies what are friends for to which Linus says Good ol’ Charlie Brown. So it’s nice to see him win sometimes even if it’s rare.

(Sorry to accidentally spam the comments, I'm just a yapper ^^') Your bit about sexuality not relating to intelligence reminded me of how people assumed I was ace because I read books in the breaktime, got good grades and had passion for some stem topics. That assumption accidentally translated to a bit of a bimbo kink, since (even if I know consciously there is no relation between intelligence and sexuality) the conflation was forced upon me repeatedly to excuse their exclusion of me from any social interaction unless they were wanting something from me. I subconsciously feel I have to act stupid to be allowed to be sexual after being deliberately excluded from allonormativity despite being allo! You know how both autism and asexuality are infantilised, dehumanised and often conflated with each other? The prejudices towards both overlap so much that I'm surprised more allo autistics don't relate to the ace community (at least in solidarity).

  • @SteppefordWife

I think it's easy to feel like someone is acting high and mighty even if they themselves don't feel they are (my sister, and siblings generally may be a pretty good example of this). Some ace people assume this must be because allo people feel threatened by ace people the same way many people feel threatened by unmarried childfree women and their happiness despite not following the arbitrary "life script". And sure, some people do feel threatened by the idea of people who don't need to follow that script (especially for people impacted by the sunk cost falacy, such as unhappy tradwives or men who are convinced sex and marriage will fill the hole lavk of community leaves). But then, why do people who don't feel threatened still feel like ace people are on a high horse? Part of it may be unintentional phrasing, such as Sandor claiming ace people are "better at talking about sex more objectively" which I disagree with even if I think ace and aspec perspectives of sex should be listened to and are valid. There just isn't an "objective truth" about sex, heck, even the definition of what even counts as sex or sexual seems up in the air a lot of the time for anyone not strictly adhering to the penetrative heteronormative definition. Another habit gives a snobby impression is, in discussions of sex or sexual attraction, ace people going "you said sex, I was talking about sexual attraction - can't you tell the difference? 😏" and vice versa, even if THEY initiated the concersation strictly about one or the other and you stuck with it. Another similar habit in conversations about aspec and aroace representation is blatantly calling fans and writers uncreative, boring or stupid for including sex or romance in a story. As someone who doesn't enjoy either in most media, I get where this sentiment comes from but having an allo character does not inherently make that character uncreative (and aroace rep isn't inherently better written either). A character who is not explicitly allo or aroace can still be well written, and the addition of sex or romance does not take away from that anymore than the lack of it would. I think Blue Eye Samurai is a great example of utilising sex and sexual attraction a. Seperately, b. In ways that add to Akemi's character as a well meaning but manipulative person, and c. Respectfully depicting sex work as work. Most shows with sex I generally avoid recommending to my sex repulsed friends, with the exception of Blue Eye Samurai - since there is so much both within and without those scenes that are genuinely astounding and a real shame to aboid simply because some of it is sexual. That was a detour, sorry ^^' Basically, what feels like innocuous factual statements carry a lot more weight and contention for allo people even if I do agree with the statements made. This perception of ace people (mostly ace creators rather than ace people irl) as being high and mighty isn't unfounded even if it is perhaps an overreaction to pretty common takes from the community.

I find it strange how there isn't more solidarity between other groups and ace people. Being openly ace or not open but still being firm about your boundaries WILL lead to people getting angry in ways they would with allos who simply do not wish to have sex or children be it just right now or for the forseeable future. Be it grandparents demanding grandchildren, relatives or colleagues asking invasive questions, strangers following or threatening you if you refuse their advances (especially if you dress "provocatively"), being bored or uncomfortable with sex or romance scenes in media (I feel romantic/ platonic feelings together and feel seperate sexual attraction, yet I really don't enjoy sex and romance in media largely because it's often a debiation from the main plot that's usually poorly written and usually with characters I don't relate to at all), etc.

I don't get what's so hard to accept about someone being ace? I'm conflicted about whether to identify as acespec since I do resonate with a couple of the microlabels, but part of me feels that unless I'm 100% ace the microlabels needlessly pick apart the nuances of human experience. Before realising what relationship anarchy, and queerplatonic meant, I've discussed how arbitrary relationship labels and "stages" are with my friends / partners. I can barely distinguish between romantic and platonic feelings, so I like to just call it fondness or something. I don't think sex is necessary for a relationship, but I think friends can have sex and that doesn't mean they are no longer friends or that it adds or takes away from the relationship at all. To me, it's an optional medium to express fondness, provide comfort and experiment with kinks (which can also be enjoyed outside of that context). I do find myself being mildly peeved when I see some ace people declare sex as but a distraction or worthless, and while it may not habe any inherent meaning or value that isn't to say it can't. It's like declaring all spicy food bad as someone who only enjoys mild food, you know? But unless someone makes bold declarations like that I have no clue why anyone would bother ace people.

The way I explained being ace/demi (I'm still trying to figure that out, and that's ok! Sexuality is complex.) is that I enjoy the feeling, and I could see myself doing it for someone else's pleasure, but I don't really have a desire to do it for it's own sake.

even if someone does have something like a condition that affects their sex drive, it is still their reality and if they define themselves as asexual its because they have had similar experiences as the community and can identify with the label. I dont think that a medical diagnoses detracts from a person's identity. Alongside the fact that sexual identity can be somewhat fluid and change throughout a person's life, it wouldn't make someone's identity any less valid.

I completely agree! I am a hetero male, born in 1963, and heard these songs here & there over the years, but didn’t pay close attention to the whole show until I saw the Raul Esparza video around 2010. And ever since then I have been totally convinced that Bobby is gay and cannot admit it to himself! As a Kinsey 0 myself, I can think of no other explanation for his thorough ambivalence to the women in his life. The implications in “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” that he doesn’t perform (or is uninterested) in bed, his *fierce* ambivalence in “Barcelona”… The added scene with Peter does not persuade me in the least. It’s as if the two gay authors tried to paint a picture of a straight man with colors they’d never seen themselves. What single, straight man would be _loved_ so dearly in this “company” way by these friends of both sexes? How could they enjoy regularly having him over for dinner “just the 3 of us” with no sexual tension? (At least the nods to sexual tension in the book are not convincing to me.) I can’t help trying to see Bobby as more than a cipher, as a believable character. And him being gay makes the whole show add up. About Sondheim’s capsule description of the plot: Notice he wrote “no emotional commitments”, not to say “involvements”. He certainly is involved with his friends, but not committed to anyone. Thank you for this thoroughly researched essay. You said what I’ve been trying to figure out for years.

I agree totally with your views. Excellent research and beautiful presentation. (Except your singing is awful. Maybe that was intentional.) But I am wary of how this material reaches only people on our side, and simply demonizes the other side. I don’t think this will help. If anything, it increases the opposition. As disgusting as the prospect is, I feel sure that the only way to combat fascism is to connect with people on the other side. As long as we view each other as less worthy people, there is no reconciliation.
