    Of course the oil becomes 'dirty', metal sliding on metal bushes, as designed. Are you sure its a leaf blower? Could be a hedge cutter or chain saw. I use a 2stroke hedgecutter but try not to use it on a weekend esp Sundays. How are your neighbours with your bike workshop?

  • @fjdelmonte

    This neighborhood dates back to the 1940' and 50's as an extension of the houses and tents that were built for people to live in as they fought tuberculosis. The Arizona sun was a big step in curing them. (Our neighborhood area is named, "Sunnyslope".) We have no HOA or anything like that, and Arizona and Phoenix are very pro-small business so home based businesses are pretty common. I actually have a business license and collect and pay taxes every month, so I'm fully legal. I keep a clean shop, a neat property, and do the test rides reasonably quietly. You may have noticed that I keep the garage door open even in these really hot months. That's so my neighbors can stop by and see the bikes and say hi as we work. So, so far there has been no problem. Oh yeah, they are leaf blowers. There are a couple of hundred homes in our little area and someone is having yard work done every &^%$# day of the week.

    Two things...........1/.If the bike uses taper roller bearings,this method of checking steering head bearings is not accurate as over tightened ( tr ) bearings will still exhibit the same "feel ". 2/.Checking play by gripping the bottom of the sliders & pulling/pushing back and forth gives a better indication of not only steering head bearing wear/adjustment ( roller bearing type )and also any fork bush wear present.

  • @fjdelmonte
    @fjdelmonte3 күн бұрын

    Good points. The "fall over" is very smooth and possibly too easy. I will take a bit of a turn on the head bearings while I still have the bike up on the lift. As for the leaf blowers, well, I'm old and crotchety, and gas powered leaf blowers, low flying helicopters, and my neighbors Harley are the bane of my existence. Way too many "louds" each day. It's a quality of life thing. Mine is being damaged by those unnecessary noises. I can't convince my neighbor to reinstall his stock pipes, and I can't make the helo's observe flight minimums, but I sure would like to vote to outlaw gas blowers. Battery powered blowers are quieter and make a steady sound rather than the mind killing on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off, three-blocks-away-obnoxious gas ones. Sigh, the only good thing about being old is being old. Ride On! Ride Safe! And thanks for watching and taking the time to write. F.

    I don't know how this job was done before the internet. I Google parts, find them, buy them, and they show up a few days later. BUT, I only work on Norton, Triumph, and BSAs from the 60's and 70's so the parts are available. I don't know how the folks who restore the bikes from the 30's , 40's, do it. I have a friend up in Alaska who travels to England to search for parts. That's way out of my realm of reality! What I do is easy compared to what the serious restorers do. I'm just a reasonably good amateur.

    You could use a spring hook, or even vice grips on those springs. And who knows what additives are in Carb cleaner ?? I think brake cleaner would be cheaper too.

  • @fjdelmonte
    @fjdelmonte3 күн бұрын

    Spring hooks and vice grips work just fine. Used them for years. Then one day I asked myself, "Why am I being careful with parts I am going to throw away?" So now I just smacks 'em and tosses 'em. As for brake cleaner cleaning old baked on grease: It doesn't work. At all. It's a waste of time. But CRC Carb cleaner cuts thru 40 year old grease like a hot knife thru butter. However, you are correct about the harmful additives. California outlawed the good version of CRC Carb Cleaner. Now I have to be real careful to get the 49 state version when I order my usual 6 cases every three months. As for the additives, well, I will defenenetelty says I isnt as smart as I used to was. Ride On! Ride Safe! F.

    There is nothing wrong with Powder coat. You need a good powder coater. I use it on all my restorations and it has never been a problem and looks great when done. In fact, if you put it next to one of my original paint bikes, you can't tell which one is paint versus powder coat. Sometimes you need to remove it from tight tolerance surfaces but I've had to do that with paint at times too.

  • @simonwalker7957

    Nothing wrong with powder coat and not issue here. Basically that stand is clamped tight by the two bolts. According to the parts diagram it should have two nuts per side the extras to hold the first in a not so tight setting then the stand will swing. You may need to replace the spring if that one is old and tired. Keep’um comin’

  • @fjdelmonte
    @fjdelmonte4 күн бұрын

    Sorry to disagree but the centerstand swings on inserts that are slightly wider than the engine plates. (Group 13, #50, 51, 52, 53, 55.) Bolts are to be fully tightened. Good suggestion on the spring though. This one is new. Ride Safe! Thanks for watching.

    I really don't see the point of electronic speedometer & tachometer, as they both still have cables anyway. If my old mechanical cables ever (rarely) broke, the dealer made one up over the counter right away, from a large coil. Good luck sourcing a new one though.

    Powder coat is fine, BUT you have to remove it from any adjoining surfaces, and especially area that provide a ground! Too many people forget to do this. Keep the videos coming, love to watch them and hope to be doing the same thing when I retire in 10 years!

    Actually this is one of those questions with a thousand answers, and a thousand opinions. And all of them are correct. I've heard using 20/50 engine oil, 30 weight engine oil, and ATF-F. I've never understood why ATF-F and not just ATF, but that's what I've heard. (I THINK ATF-F was for Ford transmissions, but I wouldn't swear to it.) Bottom line, all of them, and anything else you can think of work just fine. ATF-F MIGHT give a bit less drag, or a better release, but once again I wouldn't swear to it. I'm open to any and all suggestions offered by other followers.
