The aesthetic of the Image: [world] cinema clips

"Film is a disease. When it infects your bloodstream it takes over as the number one hormone. It bosses the enzymes, directs the pineal gland, plays Iago to your psyche. As with heroin, the antidote to Film is more Film." - Frank Capra

Over 6900 clips!

Mostly world cinema/International/arthouse/‘experimental’ or 'indie' clips + cool Hollywood stuff...

Not really about 'famous' clips - but instead scenes where a particular image is paramount - though of course sometimes the two concepts are one and the same.

'Aesthetic' does not imply beauty as such - rather I try to vaguely interrogate what makes a particular image or set of images arresting or memorable. They might of course be beautiful, they could even be 'ugly.' I like cinema.

Lots (1700+!) of interesting playlists - directors/theme etc

All clips now also organised into year of release playlists from 1878-2023* -- (1968 seems to be current Top with about 183 clips so far!)

Nearly every year (1878-2023) has its own playlist

    Neat. But how do we know it's supposed to be cocaine? That kinda resembles me when I used to do heroin 🤷

  • @AestheticOfTheImage
    @AestheticOfTheImageКүн бұрын

    Well, in Modern Times (1936) Charlie 'accidently' (again!) does cocaine too - but it is referred to as 'nose powder'. I think in both cases it is assumed to be cocaine as there is nothing else it could be. The Brits have always had a longstanding affection for cocaine apparently. I remember reading that when Queen Elizabeth's grandfather, George V was on the brink of dying (1936), his personal doctor finished him off with a hearty dose of cocaine so that his death would be in time for The Times headline the nest morning!

    Thank you, thank you for posting one of my favorite scenes in this movie, or any movie. "Hairspray" was so boundary crossing on so many levels. I feel better knowing that I live in a world that John Waters also lives in. He must never die, just get older and finally turn into something good to eat.

    I was reminded of this scene while reading “Nausea” by Jean Paul Sartre. It seems to me like the whole of Nausea, that is, the whole book can be incapsulated beautifully in this brief scene.

    It amazes me that I have yet to see this infamous once-underground classic all the way through. I caught the tail end (no pun intended!) on Turner Classic Movies not too long ago, and have otherwise only seen bits and pieces such as this in various fora over the decades. Your comments here remind me of a moment on the old ABC skit-comedy show 'Fridays', from before the marriage of the present King to Lady Diana Spencer, where it was announced that the then Prince of Wales had found the woman of his dreams, and it was none other than Miss Divine, showing an image of her Babs persona as illustration. That WOULD have been a wedding for the ages.
