Easy Street (1917) by Charlie Chaplin, Clip: A gangster injects cocaine - and Charlie inadvertently!

Фильм және анимация

The Image: Yes, explicit drug use - and cocaine too - in 1917* Who woulda have thought it!?
Lots of manic rushing about and downright silliness to assuage the shock contemporary (and especially modern) audiences might feel at contemplating narcotics use is an otherwise innocent caper movie.
(And God forgive me - I slightly edited this sequence to keep the dive and energy of the drug scene)
And Charlie accidently cops a mad dose of Cocaine too! (aestheticoftheimageuk.wordpre...) I think I need to sit down!
* And in a Charlie Chaplin movie?

Neat. But how do we know it's supposed to be cocaine? That kinda resembles me when I used to do heroin 🤷

Well, in Modern Times (1936) Charlie 'accidently' (again!) does cocaine too - but it is referred to as 'nose powder'. I think in both cases it is assumed to be cocaine as there is nothing else it could be. The Brits have always had a longstanding affection for cocaine apparently. I remember reading that when Queen Elizabeth's grandfather, George V was on the brink of dying (1936), his personal doctor finished him off with a hearty dose of cocaine so that his death would be in time for The Times headline the nest morning!
