  For me, Maria Reining was one of the noblest personalities of the Viennese musical life in the 20th century. She is always the best, whatever she sings, she sings better than anyone else, with the exception of the Italian roles. Whether it is Elsa, Elisabeth, Eva, Sieglinde, Euryanthe, Agathe or (especially) the Strauss roles, she always outshines the others - through the sound and its radiant power as well as through the warmth and culture of expression. If you like Reining, I would like to recommend you the Czech soprano Ludmila Červinková (1908-1980) who I consider as the Czech analogue to her (lot of recordings in my channel). These two ladies were together with Renata Tebaldi the most cultivated sopranos after the Second World War.

  I've never heard most of these, despite having know her voice for 30 years. The (unexpected) comparison for a number of the earliest ones was Ponselle. (And the expected similarity to Flagstad in places). And even in the later Mozart ones, there is still a clarity of sound and directness of attack that we don't normally associate with Sutherland

  Unfortunately as time went on Verret's coordination of the 2 registers suffered and she developed a real break. For some roles it didnt matter though

  My favorite Afro-American singer ever. Versatility, an impeccable technique, musicianship. Her recordings with Sills in Norma and Anna Bolena are simply legendary. RIP

  Verrett at the height if her vocal powers. The reaction of the public at the end of O Don Fatale is perfectly understandable and richly deserved. Still, wasn't the production staged at the Royal Opera House and not at the Albert Hall? Isn't Abbado conductung the Luchino Visconti production?

  This performance is from July 29, 1968 and took place at the Royal Albert Hall under the baton of Georg Solti. On June 19, Mrs. Verrett had sung the same role at the ROH Covent Garden with Claudio Abbado on the podium.
