RegionalTransitEnthusiast is a channel that primarily discusses regional transportation around the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The channel was born out of my passion for railroads, history, public transportation, urban design, engineering, architecture, and infrastructure. I hope that there is a number of my viewers who are also enthusiastic about the topics I cover. I hope to upload future content soon, and please feel free to leave video ideas in the comments. #transit #train

Fun fact #2 there were technically SIX railroads, but not concurrently. The O&B (Ohio & Baltimore) short line ran from the (removed) B&O Yough River crossing at Wheeler, across the B&O FM&P sub and then overtop of the PRR to some mines and coke ovens, crossing over Route 119 at Sitka and heading toward Leisenring. a portion of the stone arch bridge at Wheeler bottom remains and can still be seen today.
I’d planned to model this in HO scale c. 1967 and had a massive collection assembled, but it never got off the ground. If you wanted to do this, you’d need a proper mix of… PRR, B&O EMDs, WM EMD/Alco in Speed paint only, N&W (hi hood), P&LE U-boats, add in some misc RDG power to WM + B&O, and add relevant freight cars. Then you’d need to custom model the important buildings and bridge structures. Also fun fact there were a total of four rail yards (B&O, Bowest (WM, Dunbar) Greenwood (PRR, Wheeler bottom), and P&LE (with Dickerson Run further to the north). All that remains there today is the CSX yard and its connections to WLE (N&W) and SWP (PRR) railroads.
He made a mistake doing 3 train the train is called “2 train”
Thanks for the comment!
Close to my house
Your headline is misleading, since Amtrak does not own the tracks to Pittsburgh.
You’re right, thanks for pointing this out. The main video is about Amtrak’s track ownership out East from Harrisburg to Philly. This just highlights who owns the tracks that Amtrak runs on. A poor word choice on myself. Thanks again for pointing this out.
@@RegionalTransitEnthusiast no problem. I don’t want to be one of those Jackholes that point out errors in everyone’s videos.
Why does even poor country's have great high-speed rail service but the good Ole USA has none? Amtrac runs on fright line, worn out track service at 100 mph, very dangerous.
That’s a great question. Mainly politics and cars. Sad that the best new “high” speed rail service is private as in Brightline.
I'm now 80 yrs old. Would love a high speed rail service from St. LOUIS to Salt Lake City. Flying is getting dangerous, fewer competent service people, bus takes to long an driving is out of the question at my age. And Amtrac, at least two days. Sad, I see my country becoming a third world nation. Thank God my days are short. :^(
I Love It
San Diego is very nice!
It’s missing the baggage car
Yes it is! That’s quite a catch. This video is from 2022. In the fall of 2022, Amtrak suspended baggage service on the Pennsylvanian due to lack of equipment. This was temporarily for about 2 months.
@@RegionalTransitEnthusiast oh ok thx for the explanation.
Cool! 🚂
Thank you! I was quite lucky to see #4004 going around the horseshoe.
They are in serious need of ballast on that track. Cool spot though, have a good weekend 👍🏼😎🇺🇸
Haha, for sure. They just have a few historic cars on this siding. Thank you sir!
We’ve got one of these, connecting a conservative Bible university’s parking lot between the library and the graduate school, and a head shop, not the Taco Bell, the Schlotzsky's nor King’s Asian Chef (on either side), nor the minor emergency clinic, not even Truck Hero’s parking lot, where a medical doctor was hit, crossing to listen to the symphony (from where Sweetheart/Ft. Howard/Lily-Tulip had made cups), but the grow shop.
Thank you for sharing! I have been to Springfield once on my way to OKC. I hope to make it back out there one day. I will have to see if I can find this crossing, the only one I have ever seen was out in California.
@@RegionalTransitEnthusiast there's three others in town, two off exit 80, you'll pass by one at Wal*mart, then this one, there's a traditional one, by the state u, then one further south, where it crosses a meandering road, where a swamp used to be.
You ruin the experience being in your phone.
I agree! That’s why I recorded at my chest, and watched the whole thing with my eyes. Just gotta have steady hands. Thanks for the comment.

Lo siento, no comprendo amigo.
This is the best relaxing video, cause I don't drive 🚗
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cars are pur freedom, it is interesting seeing how people view a freedom as a restriction to their freedoms.
Freedom isn’t free as they say.
You could drive thru the ditch, but you'd need a tank to get thru the cramped houses!
Dont know who was more dumb...the developers or the people who brought the houses...🤔🫣🥸
Did not sleepy Joe Outlaw coal
No, coal is still alive and well.
If he did they're would have been outages coal does a lot to our energy supply
I’ll bet N&W 611 could pull this load by itself !
This is the kind of content that brings people together.
Thank you!
Penguinz0?
You can call me Charlie
Thats how you should cross any cross walk.
Yes! However, most crosswalks do not have the RRFB which helps alert drivers.
First like and comment and thanks for the advise I’m only 9
No problem, stay safe!
Incredible job!!! I can't believe the amount of trackage on those Altoona yard maps. Thank you for all your research and hard work.
Thank you very much! That means a lot to me, and I am glad that you appreciate my work.
Great video!! Love the content!
Thank you! I am glad to hear that you enjoyed it.
Third world problems... 🤷
Third world railroads for sure!
😳😳😳
Scary stuff!
Very cool, my favorite to railfan.
One of my favorites as well! Thank you for enjoying and commenting!
That’s interesting, I’m glad you posted this. I usually see or hear the Capital Limited going through Smithton around 10:30pm, which makes sense because it’s departing Connellsville just prior to that. Now I see Amtrak around 7:30am every morning going through Smithton, would that also be the Capital Limited?
Yes, I believe so. That would be the return train from Chicago to DC. Connellsville is 6:59AM and the next stop Cumberland, MD is at 9:20AM.
He's booking it
For sure! This section is a pretty low grade as it gently follows the Juniata River.
Ive seen CP power on ethanol trains before on the CSX Keystone sub, i love seeing foreign power
I haven't seen CP too often on NS. I have seen Union Pacific the most I feel, seeing foreign power is always a sight!
That looks like PA rt 65 near Sewickley PA. Is this where this video was taken ?
@@JBDay-bd8cu No, this is on US Route 22 out past Altoona, PA.
WMSR #1309 pulls up. She's undergoing repairs rn
Thank you for commenting! I did not know that she was back in the shop. This video was from December 9th, 2023. Hopefully money for the fundraising campaign will happen quickly.
I think someone said she's undergoing piston repairs.
I’d like to get to Frostburg in the future, my parents went to the Cass RR last fall, that’s another one I’d like to check out
Frostburg and Cumberland are both lovely cities. Cass is definitely a must on the railroad bucket list. Just experiencing the former logging town and learning the history of the area is great. I hope you check it out soon! Recommend the fall if you want to see the leaves change colors, other than the Spruce trees of course!
Awesome sound there, I never get tired of hearing SD40-2’s. I see SWP in Youngwood and on the way to Greensburg, where exactly was this at?
Willow Crossing is the road and name of the Five Stair Trail access point. However, the area is sometimes known as Midway, and used to be called Fosterville. It is where the Speedway is located.
Nice, looked like a flared radiator SD70MAC second unit💪🏼😎🇺🇸
That’s a great catch! I’ve loved trains my whole life, but I don’t know different locomotives series like that. It’s something I’m gonna have to learn, haha 🤟🏻
Pretty cool, those mountains were breathtaking, I’d love to go to Switzerland someday
They mountains are definitely the best part. I will see if I can find any other videos from Switzerland. It is quite a unique place, but very expensive.
Pretty cool, I like that old GE center cab on the innermost track👍🏼😎🇺🇸
Thank you! That is the Lionel Lehigh Valley No. 627 GE switcher from 1956-57. It can run forward and reverse, and works like a charm ☘️
Awesome, love seeing old works of art like that, true mechanical wonders👍🏼😎🇺🇸
It is amazing to see something like that come back to life. I was lucky enough to have visited the railroad before it closed back in 2011, and seeing it again was very nostalgic for me.
I believe that was the line that ran through the Westside on the elevated line
Nice to learn about this small town’s rich connection to the railroad. Really puts into perspective how incredible my town (Superior, WI) has to be to have been served by 8 different railroads (NP, GN, CNW, SOO, DMIR, DWP, DSS&A, and the LST&T) at its height despite being only about a third the size of its neighbor city. Great video!
Oh my goodness, 8! Wow, I think that may be the most in any town someone has commented yet. I will have to look into your town, and I really hope to compile a list with the different towns and their number of railroads. Thank you for your comment, and I am glad you enjoyed the video.
The improvements to South Street + Kings Ct are nice, but I would argue the city is only trying to solve safety issues that they're creating themselves. South street is less than a mile long, and runs entirely through a dense(ish) part of the city, yet its posted at 35 MPH. With the wide travel lanes, I'd assume most cars are doing 40+. Lowering the limit to 20, narrowing the lanes, and adding a stop sign at each intersection would make the crossing safer than any flashing beacon, high vis sign or surface markings ever could, without requiring pedestrians to read a manual on how to cross the street. The current Crossing setup is only acceptable if automobile speed is a priority over pedestrian safety. If that is not the case, then there is no better solution than slow speeds, narrow lanes, and stops at every crossing. The same goes for Madonna road, however that would require much more physical alterations.
overall, great video! I liked the in person tour of sites you found interesting, excited to see more in the future :)
I am really glad you are critical of this crossing. I think that while it is definitely an upgrade from the previous nothing, that this infrastructure was primarily put in place with the cyclists in mind. Biking seems to be a big theme and culture out there in that area, and this infrastructure demonstrated it. I mean, there isn't even a crosswalk for people walking on the other side of King Ct. I would say that the only reason the lanes are so wide is because it was a previous 4 lane road. It really is only a temporary fix in my mind. I am glad you enjoyed the video! It really means a lot to get these considerate comments, and shows you connected to the content. Thank you!
Excellent. New subscriber from Eastern North Carolina.
Thank you for the comment and subscribing! One of my coworkers is from New Bern, NC. I have heard it’s beautiful out there near the coast.
There was some big power on the head, two ES44AH’s, an AC44CW and a YN2 AC44CW, all 4 units were sitting on radial trucks. Great catch, have a good one👍🏼😎🇺🇸
Thank you very much for information! Appreciate the response, have a good one as well 🤟🏻💪🏻
Too bad they could not have made the town a transit/freight hub...
It was at one time. It was also the headquarters of the West Penn Railways, an electrified trolley service that served the surrounding area. Both the boom of the automobile and the decrease of coal led to little freight and transit.
I have enjoyed both of your videos. Hope you keep making more.
I am glad to hear that you enjoyed both of my videos! I have been traveling for work, so unfortunately, I have not been able to work on my next idea. However, I fly back home tomorrow, and look forward to my next video. Keep an eye out for it in the next 2-4 weeks I would say.
Awesome!
I am glad to hear you think so! I think the town is very awesome, and the history is part of what makes it unique.
Been there on bike trail
I have biked both the Connellsville and Ohiopyle stretches. They are both beautiful scenic drives. I have never biked the West Newton section, but I have canoed down the river which was a blas!
Thank you
Thank you very much for watching.
Winona, Minnesota, also had 5 railroads up until the mid-1960’s. They were the Milwaukee Road line from Chicago to St. Paul; The Chicago and Northwestern line from Adams Wisconsin to South Dakota; the Green Bay and Western from Green Bay to Winona, the Chicago Great Western branch from Rochester MN to Winona, and the Chicago Burlington and Quincy, whose Chicago - Minneapolis main line ran on the east bank of the Mississippi and who had trackage rights over the GB&W from East WInona to WInona. They kept a switch engine in Winona. Today, all of the rail lines into Winona are owned by the CPKC. The Chicago and Great Western was abandoned in the late 1960’s, and the Green Bay and Western was abandoned following a fire which destroyed their Mississippi River bridge. This also terminated the BN (CB&Q) trackage rights. The Union Pacific acquired the Chicago and Northwestern and retains trackage rights over the CPKC from Winona to Adams, as the result of the acquisition of the Milwaukee Road by the Soo LIne and the subsequent merger of the Soo Line into the Canadian Pacific (CP) and ultimately the CPKC.
Wow! Thank you for sharing all of this history. I see from your profile picture that you know quite a lot about the Milwaukee Road. I have watched a video and researched myself about their western expansion to Seattle. I am unfamiliar with Minnesota, and never realized that they have such a historic railroad history. I see the remnants of the former bridge that crossed the Mississippi River. Thank you very much for your comment.
Nice video!
Thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed.
Saint thomas, Ontario used to have 5 railroads too with the Canada Southern, Pere Marquette, Canadian National, London and Port Stanley, and the Credit Valley Raikway. Great video! Nice to learn about these little towns!
I know very little of the former major Canadian Railways. I will have to do some research on the ones that you have mentioned. I watched a video that talked about Winnipeg and how that was at the center of a large passenger network. It was quite interesting to learn that past.
Rivet counter: "your model railroad town is unrealistic, there are too many track all over the place!" Me: <this video>
Hahaha, the more tracks, the merrier. The layouts we create may be uncommon, but they sure are realistic somewhere!
