@peschkom-mongolianwanderings9910 ай бұрын
As nearly everywhere in Mongolia, you're spoiled for choice in terms of camping options🙂 Unfortunately in most years the water level of the Kharaa is too low to make longer paddling trips really viable. At least the next 70 km of river after I stopped seem very interesting and beautiful...
@mukiker11 ай бұрын
Nice river! The area is more populated than I imagined Mongolia would be :) I see it is close to Ulanbaatar. How many kilometers did you paddle? I want to go on some river in Mongolia. Which one would you recommend? 300-500km. Thanks!
@peschkom-mongolianwanderings9911 ай бұрын
yes, due to the proximity to UB and the train line it is a bit more populated. But I actually saw much less people than expected. I did 35 km on this trip. Only the upper Kharaa is interesting, once you pass the town of Zuunkharaa (still 70 km downriver of where I stopped) it becomes quite boring. For a longer trip I would recommend the Eg/Selenge rivers (more than 600 km possible), or Ider/Selenge (also more than 600 km possible), the Onon is also very nice (more than 300 km possible, depending on skill level/logistics). There are a few other options. If you are on facebook, you're welcome to join the Mongolia Paddling Group: facebook.com/groups/3073713692680992

Super Video!

Can you camp here ?
@peschkom-mongolianwanderings993 жыл бұрын
As almost anywhere in Mongolia you can camp freely, but this river is quite remote and very difficult to access and you are completely on your own out there. We actually ran into quite some trouble on this trip. There's bears too... I would not recommend going there without an experienced local guide.
@donaldpang3 жыл бұрын
@@peschkom-mongolianwanderings99 I didn’t know bears are so close to Tuul river but near the northern region. I thought wolves would be more common. When I camped by the Tuul river, it was very peaceful except an unfriendly guard dog was quite aggressive

@@donaldpang You're right, there are usually no bears in the southern part of Gorkhi-Terelj. This video here is from a trip further north in Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area, on one of the two main tributaries that form the Yeröö river.

@peschkom-mongolianwanderings993 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We launched about 8 km upriver from the bridge at the entrance to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and paddled all the way back to UB city. I paddled the upper Tuul back to UB about 6-7 times now, as it is the easiest trip in terms of logistics. You could start almost 150 km upriver from UB if you find somebody with a 4wd to bring you up there.
