I’ve tested this vehicle at our local dealer and delved a bit deeper than what the ads and owners suggest. Unfortunately, my impression is rather negative. I hope this brand doesn’t disappear from Australia in 2024, but I can’t say anything encouraging about a car with BMW components. What I definitely know is that I wouldn’t dare take it on a serious off-road journey or a long trip. After careful consideration, I chose the LC 70 series.
@atavachron273 ай бұрын
Tested this vehicle.? Mmm. You don't own one, so I can only guess your experience is extremely limited. I've had the car for several months now, and it only gets better. I actually had the car at a 4x4 outfitter who is almost exclusively toyota 70 series and landcruiser 80,100,200 and 300 focused. He was extremely impressed with the Grenadier. His view is that it is much better built than the Toyota vehicles and has a huge amount of in-built capability and customisation options. Enjoy your 70 series!

I don't need months to understand a car as a user. This is my impression as a professional driver with an engineering degree and extensive driving experience in both Australia and Europe across various car brands. I simply don't like this car, and it's not just a first impression. The issues include its strange steering, unusual vibration for such a 'glorified' vehicle, and an automatic gearbox, which isn't the best option for a true and serious off-road car. Additionally, I have a few other important reasons not to buy this car, but let's just say that could be a subjective point of view. While I'm not a fanatic of Toyota, I do have experience with the G-Class Mercedes-Benz, which is an excellent off-road car in all aspects, but too expensive for Australia. However, regarding the Grenadier, I have no idea how a BMW engine can improve if it has always been problematic, as widely reported by BMW owners. I guess after investing over $120,000 in this vehicle, anyone would have to love it regardless of the reality. Anyway, time is the best judge. Let's talk about it in five years. And at least I'm not taking a risk, given that I don’t need five years to say that Toyota is already good. @@atavachron27

Think of the money you would have saved through buying a pickup with canopy, like a VW Amarok Panamericana or Ford Ranger Wiltrak. At least as much room in the cabin. Better and more active safety stuff. 10 speed automatic. Better steering on road and rough. Far better performance and fuel economy. Lower running costs and a higher payload capacity with equal tow rating. However the world would be a boring place if everyone chose the same of everything. As a station wagon, my preference for similar money as Grenadier would be a Defender 110 with the 300hp diesel motor. There’s a couple of Grenadiers here locally, within a couple of miles of one of my farms. A cream and a black one. I actually cancelled my order for a five seat ‘commercial’ version specced up, because the low payload prohibits business customers from reclaiming the VAT in the UK. By purchasing a Ranger I saved UK £35,000 after claiming VAT and will also save in income tax as well, which made the Grenadier a ridiculous proposition. Not even the pickup Quartermaster qualifies, because it can only carry 600kgs or so rather than the required 1000kgs.
@atavachron276 ай бұрын
I did consider a Ford Ranger wildtrack for many of the reasons you mentioned. It was very sensible and logical option. Perhaps that was the reason that as D day approached, I just couldn't do it! Every other car here in NZ is a Ranger or toyota ute. Nothing wrong with that, they are excellent vehicles, but I wanted something more than just a vehicle. I wanted something a bit different and something a bit more robust that will last 20-30 years. Nothing else on the market really offers that. Maybe a Toyota Landcruiser 300 but I can't order one in NZ currently and unlikely to even get on a waitlist until 2025! Everyone choses a vehicle for different reasons. If just a work vehicle/business vehicle then I probably agree, the Grenadier makes no sense. However, for those of us that want something a bit different and specific, the Grenadier is a fantastic machine. I don't think it was ever intended as a real rival to the mass produced utes...it's definitely a niche product. BTW I do disagree about the steering, I think the Grenadier has amazing steering, on and off road. The more I drive it the more I like it. This is another trait of the Grenadier for me (and it seems others) you like it more each day...not something that applies to many other standard vehicles.

A heavy duty all terrain vehicle is not exclusive to basic uncomfortable poorly equipped and unrefined vehicles. This one is built too heavy for its intended purpose though, in my opinion. It should have been designed to have a tare weight even in high trim variants of just less than 2.5 tons. In fact it weighs between 2.7 and 2.9 tons unladen which leaves a pitifully small payload for such a heavily built vehicle, of between 600 and 800 kgs maximum. That includes any accessories fitted such as roof racks, ladders, tools, straps, tow hitch, fuel and passengers with their luggage. Remember that a 3 ton trailer will ideally add 300kgs nose weight to it immediately, lowering the allowable cargo weight very substantially.
@atavachron276 ай бұрын
@@hedydd2 I think people are focusing too much on the published numbers. I think the Grenadier is overbuilt by quite a margin. I think it will carry a lot more (and do so safely) than advertised. Other brands have automatic cruise control with steering assist, which means that the truck detects a danger and slams on the brakes in less time than it takes for a driver to react. Also works in reverse and it does work well. I don’t believe any of this is fitted or can be fitted to Grenadier. Certainly the 1960’s type recirculating ball power assisted steering cannot be controlled by the safety or self driving gadgets like a modern electric power steering can.
@atavachron276 ай бұрын
@hedydd2 and it's all the better for it. I have driven several new rental cars with all the driver assist functions and as well as being intrusive to the point of spoiling the driving experience, I think it will (and does) result in laziness on the part of the driver. The majority may prefer this kind of semi autonomous driving experience, but I personally don't. The Grenadier intent is as clear as it can be, and if people want something more digital, they should consider something else. It's a bit like trying to make a lion a vegetarian! 😀

In that regard, there isn't really anything on the market that offers what the Tekton does, namely full range, high efficiency with a very well implemented sonic balance. Maybe Zu would claim that but generally at a higher price point and with perhaps a less refined sound.
Two driving lights in the grill look a bit like early SsangYong, not pretty 😮
They work really well, that's all I care about!
Lovely colour combo and spec. Can I ask if you opted for 18” steel rims or stayed with the std 17”?
I stayed with 17 inch rims. The smaller the better!
@@atavachron27 Thank you.
I like the video. I’m from the USA and very interested when they come over here. May I ask about pricing and do you think it’s worth it. Have you driven jeeps? I have had three and wonder how the handling compares
I've driven some Jeeps when in the US a few years ago and couldn't live with the very sketchy build quality. They are great at what they do, but not in the same league as the grenadier. in terms of build I think this point is missed on some of the reviews. They are so busy pointing out the flaws (lack of cupholders and usb ports....seriously?) they forget to mention how solid and high quality the components are. I truly believe this thing will outlast me!
@@atavachron27 Very interesting. I do agree everyone points out flaws but doesn’t take in account the build quality. In America we need at least 20 cup holders and 40 usb ports lol can’t go without them.
You must get it tracked and properly aligned. Mine drives like a different vehicle since I had it done, it appears that the factory set up is wrong. No more slight corrections. Your door seal needs to be replaced under warranty, it is a known issue, I am awaiting my replacement. Enjoy it!
Hi.....there is absolutely nothing wrong with the steering/alignment on my car. It seem to be bang on, as supplied. I had an extended drive this weekend and the steering and overall drive of this car is exceptional for the type of vehicle it is. My only remaining observation is the initial throttle response on take off from a complete stop. I would imagine a remap could cure this quite easily, but in reality, I'm finding it less of an issue as I drive it more.
@@atavachron27 How is the leg room behind ? Looks visually kind of small, maybe too small ?
@thesteammachine1282 it's not bad at all. It's not a stretch limo, but space is good, reasonable legroom and good width. Passengers will be fine on longer trips.
@@atavachron27 Cheers !
CHELSEA TRACTOR the TOTAL OPPOSITE of what jim ratcliffe promised us.
That's a really constructive comment! This car will do anything you want it to do offroad and is as far from a Chelsea tractor as any car I can imagine!
You could call my Defender 110 TD5 or 130 TDi Chelsea Tractors, except I don't live in Chelsea, they wouldn't pass the low emissions requirements and I have taken them to maybe 25 countries, - over the Alps, Pyrenees, Dolomites, Albanian, Bosnian and Greek mountains etc etc. If you want an old style vehicle - buy one.
I think anyone buying a "Chelsea tractor" does so with the expectation that it drives like a modern SUV. The Grenadier doesn't do that IMHO....it's an old school drive and actually takes a bit more effort and concentration. I think it will be too much like hard work for someone looking for a "Chelsea reactor".
@@hedydd2 I think people are focusing too much on the published numbers. I think the Grenadier is overbuilt by quite a margin. I think it will carry a lot more (and do so safely) than advertised. Just look at how folks load up their 70 series and old defenders.....no way they are conforming to published payloads! I can't see any real world limitation for the Grenadier.
How re you supposed to read all those switches on the roof when you are actually driving? It’s a lovely car Stuart and I very much hope it’s as solid as a rock, which is all that matters for an off road car like this. In 1980 I had brand new a Toyota Land Cruiser which was astonishing after the useless Land Rover I’d had before. Reliability is everything, as is door sealing against desert dust, and working everything that’s included. Very best wishes and thanks for the info.
Hi Richard..the working switches become quite intuitive after a while. You have to double check the first few times, but after that, it becomes second nature .
For Accessories, Black Sheep Innovations GMBH Switzerland seem to be the most advanced when it comes to modifications for the Grenadier especially for the German and European Grenadier owners
Once the dog arrives you will really appreciate the spare wheel storage box for leads and other dog stuff that you dont want in the car. Enjoy the car..
Do you have the winch too Stuart?
No I didn't get a winch... maybe at some point!
@@atavachron27 yes its a pricey option
I live in Scotland and got my 5 seat Utility Station Wagon in May and have now driven 5,000 miles. I would agree with all observations. Happy driving for many years! 😎🏴
Wow. Absolutely amazing vehicle. Congrats!
Thanks! It is a bit of a beast, but loving it more every day.
As someone who used to drive automatics, I find this concept that only one foot for the brake and accelerator absurd, as using two feet could stop you much quicker, the faster you were travelling.
I don't think either is "absurd"! It's really a matter of preference. I personally only use my right foot for gas and brake pedals, but understand why folks would prefer left foot braking. Each to his/her own.
The removal of taking your foot from the accelerator to the brake takes time and the faster travelling the greater the braking distance.@@atavachron27
You realize you can still use the brake pedal on "one foot driving"? The other pedal doesnt turn off lmao
Have you had any issues with it?
that room is in desperate need of treatment
It wasn't perfect but actually not bad at all. I've been to many audio show that didn't do as well. The audio was captured via phone so not a real reflection of the sound in room.
Congrats on your Tektons. I have the Lore's with the beryllium tweeters. Simply awesome. However I would love to hear the perfect set's sometime. I'm sure they are incredible. Thanks for posting.
An incredible waste of good speakers.
And you are a waste of my time!
Beautiful speakers! What is the finish on them like?
Hi Eric it's the white Hi gloss finish. Very nice paintwork that has stood up well...nearly 4 years now and they look brand new. I do wax them occasionally with car wax!
Geez sounds like Oregon.Mote music please
Maybe some room treatments?
That was 8 years ago...the room is long gone!
Could you please check for me how these 2 numbers sound on the Perfect set ??? track.1(the chorus) to see if the speakers gets to much Shrill voice kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6WWtaWkmrGpYM4.html track.2 (because of the bass) to see if the sound just rumble kzread.info/dash/bejne/lIaMqLF9g725qLA.html
I think the room is adding a bit much to the sound. thanks for sharing
Sound was recorded on a phone, so that's the limitation. Sound in room was superb, despite some reflective surfaces.
I will never understand the need for a million different amps but ok
A million different amps? Really? The only amps actually being used in the demo are a power amp and a pre-amp ( 2 amps) . In the racks there are three headphone amps, 3 dacs, a music server and an old denon cd player and associated solid state amp. I play around with different combinations of rigs mainly for trying different tubes etc. Part of the hobby really, some people don't get it I guess!
Some how that color works
No replacement for displacement. Big speakers sound big. Which Bartok recording is this btw?
It's music for strings, percussion and celesta. Fritz Reiner recording with chicago symphony orchestra.
Where's the bass???????????????????????
It was recorded on a phone....what do you expect! The bass is definitely there...very accurate, not the bloated over-emphasis that the majority of listeners gravitate to.
Thank's for posting.
Wow, wasn’t that informative. Not!!!
Is Jazz music not copyrighted? I keep hearing KZread will pull videos if copyrighted music is played. I've asked some reviewers to play some classic rock music in their videos and they will never do it.
Why would anyone want to watch this?
Somebody interested in tekton speakers maybe?
Why would anyone post such a comment, just move on if you don't like what you see and heir
@@mbracerh there is no information to be gained from this. As a person trying to learn about Tekton it’s natural to assume a video about them would contain info. You tube is full of people posting videos of speakers playing. Anyone with an investment like this guys should know recording sound in this manner and playing over KZread is awful in terms of quality. It would seems these people who post these videos know nothing about audio if they think this is a useful for others.
@@anklebar1 To a point I hear what you are saying, but I think the video will be of interest to anyone who is trying to find out more about Tekton speakers. It's had nearly 7000 views so someone has been looking! Of course the sound is not representative but unless doing a professional binaural recording and listening via headphones, you are never going to get that. And to be frank, I think I know quite a lot about audio and what sounds good v's bad. You are judging me based on absolutely zero information, which I don't find cool at all. With copyright issues, it's pretty tough to even get music on a youtube video so I was merely trying to get something on video for folks to check out. Tekton don't do a lot of their own marketing or videos so there is not much for folks to go on.
very shallow base for that size of speaker. sounds like a cheap speaker.
How so? Do you mean "base" as in physical footprint of the speaker or "bass" as in sound signature? Either way, you are either incorrect or mistaken. As for being a cheap speaker...it all depends on perspective. I personally believe this speaker it great value for money and relatively "cheap" vs any competition. In that regard, there isn't really anything on the market that offers what the Tekton does, namely full range, high efficiency with a very well implemented sonic balance. Maybe Zu would claim that but generally at a higher price point and with perhaps a less refined sound. Other than that, you are looking at a different price bracket...$10k plus to find speakers that offer a comparable performance. From the tone of your post, you may well just be trolling but hope the response is helpful to others who are genuinely interested in these speakers.
These speakers are very highly rated.
How do you like them compared to the pendragon?
See reply to audiognome!
Do you like these over the Pendragons?
It's a close call...both great speakers but the perfect sets are a slightly better match for me overall. If you like rock /metal then the pens are probably a better fit, but it really depends on your front end gear. Overall, I find the perfect sets just a touch more refined. I think that's the benefit of the array set up for the mid range. Both speakers are superb though..
@@atavachron27 I like rock/metal & I had the Enzo XL & didn't like it for that usage. There were plenty of things I liked a lot about them but ultimately they were too hot around 4khz. Can you elaborate on the Perfect SET vs Pens for rock/metal?
@@JPWinters I think I said it all above. If you like listening at crazy volumes and have a monster front end SS amp, then the pens are probably a better match. However, I do listen to a lot of rock /fusion with the perfect sets and love them....virgil donati, pineapple thief and three trapped tigers sound great. My pens are powered by dual monoblock valve power amps that do 200w so pretty much anything sounds great. However, like I said, the 7 driver mid/tweeter array of the perfect sets gives more overall refinement and detail and go plenty loud enough for me. They are my desert island speakers.
@@JPWinters Hi i have just been recomended the Enzo xl for metal music, can you explain why you didn't like them please ??

This is a great recording for sure. A really good one for testing your system. This particular system just works really well, the Doge's and Tekton pendragons pair very well.

Hey Stuart how do you like the Doge Audio Brand, also do you still have them?
Rico...sorry for the delay, been moving house! Yes I still have the Doge gear and love it! Had it 4 years now and very reliable.
Whoever chose to play this primitive music on this amazing speakers, knows very little about music! Period!!! What a disgrace!!!
Everyone has their preferences, but how is this primitive music exactly? Gary Willis is recognized as one of the worlds most accomplished bass players and composers. Maybe you should listen rather than Judge?
Did he really just say that!?
Stupid KZread comments constantly surprise me
Lol
Personally I'd like to hear some classic rock in your videos. I know it isn't recorded the best but I'll still get an idea of what it would sound like through your system.
Stuart, I got the Doge package Doge7 dac, Doge 8 Clarity preamp and Doge 9 mono amps all the PSVane T2 tube upgrades . Just burning them in now, also considering buying the Tekton Double Impact speakers or the Double Impact SEs, would like to know if your Pendragons match well with the Doge electronics? Would appreciate any advice and opinion. Thanks
Raymond.....I think they match very well. The Pendragons are actually quite neutral. I think people expect a bass heavy speaker , but I have not found that to be the case. The Doge gear is not tubey in the sense that they are also quite neutral , so if you are looking for a very bass heavy sound, you may be disappointed. I find that the Doge gear, matched with the pendragons produce a very accurate sound, huge sound stage and of course massive volume if that's your thing. However, it also scales very well due to the sensitivity of the speakers.
Do you still have them?? And, do you still like them??
I sure do and yes they are fantastic. If only I had a big enough house for the double impacts!
I have a 36 WPC PrimaLuna in the mail. Tektons are at the top of my list to pair with the PrimaLuna.
